Between the five of us, here is what we ordered:
Breaded Pork Tenderloin with Chicken Velvet Soup
“Mini” Breaded Pork Tenderloin with Tater Tots and Baked Beans
Chicken Salad Sandwich with Cream of Mushroom Soup
Breaded Pork Tenderloin with Side Salad
Breaded Pork Tenderloin topped with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy (secret menu)
The BPTs were excellent— a quintessential example of the Indiana staple. Thickness was thinner-to-medium, breading was flavorful with the proper amount of salt, and toppings were fresh and crispy. They source their meats locally from Joe’s Butcher Shop and Fish Market and the quality was immediately noticeable. I love when small businesses support each other!
The Chicken Velvet Soup was simultaneously simple and luxurious. I detected a pleasantly light celery flavor that complimented its richness. Maybe even some curry? I could’ve been satisfied with a bowl of it as my meal.
The Cream of Mushroom Soup, the soup du jour, was my Aunt’s favorite. She playfully begged the owner to put it on the regular menu.
If you like chicken salad, order it here— very good.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and inviting. I described it to my lunchmates as “everything Chili’s and Applebee’s wants to be”. It was incredibly clean, with its age only adding to its charm. Neon lights, brass handrails, and the bar right in the middle— my elder Millennial self felt right at home.
Our server remembered the drink orders of my aunt, uncle, and grandmother. Owner Doug Kemp came by and spoke to us at length, welcoming my father and I as first-timers. ♂️
We asked Doug about the restaurant’s unique hours, as they are closed on the weekends. He explained that family and work/life balance are important to him and his staff, so they prioritize it. I applaud such a human approach.
Overall I was thrilled with our experience. As the lunch crowd dispersed we lingered, telling stories and catching up. And Dooley O’Toole’s was the perfect spot to do so.
