And sure, I get it, bbq has exploded in popularity and places have to resort to using subpar cuts and have to cook in huge batches which sacrifices quality. But at least it could’ve had some spice and smoke flavor to it. Some places where even if it’s dry as leather, it’s flavorful. Here, nothing. Just… hard plain rubber with bands of unrendered fat. No deep smoky flavor, no salt. Nothing. Reese, my bro’s, what’s going on? You’re great at making Pieces but what happened to the BBQ??
In this week I’ve tried more bbq than should be allowed across texas, and of them, this is my least favorite, unfortunately. I was hoping this would be the sleeper hit of San Antonio but I have been pranked.
The pros: the homemade tortillas were hot and fresh, the orange salsa was amazing and not too spicy, the queso fundido sausage was unique and had a nice bite to it, and the chicken pozole verde hit the spot on a cold day (although $10 for a pint seemed a bit steep). The service and ambience were great!
The cons: brisket had more of a pot roast/steamed/braised texture vs smoked texture. Perhaps it was the manner it is held to temp while awaiting service. Not sure how they store it. Brisket did not have much of a bark. The flavor and smoke profile were excellent though. The “carnitas” were more reminiscent of pulled pork and were good with sauce added.
For sides, we got the poblano mac, okra and beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. The poblano mac was okay, the okra and beans were enjoyable, and the coleslaw was unique not your typical coleslaw but would pair perfectly with tacos. I’d recommend getting some flour tortillas if you order the coleslaw to make your own tacos. The potato salad was fair.
The restaurant offers two types of barbecue sauce, both of which were really good. There’s also a convenient station where you can grab aluminum, bags, utensils, paper food boats and lids if you want to take your food to go. The space is open and welcoming, the staff was very friendly, and drinks are ordered separately, but water is available.
Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for good barbecue.
I love the atmosphere of the restaurant as well.
The price is definitely on the higher side but well worth it. I’ll be back for sure
Yes, it is intimidating when you walk up to order, and yes we were the only “gringos” there, but these guys behind the counter are phenomenal and must of sensed our bewilderment and jumped right in to help and made us feel most comfortable. One asked did we have Q?s – little did he know! Yet he worked us through, even gave us samples so we knew exactly what was… we finally decided on ribs, Pablano mac & cheese and potato salad. OMGosh, this place puts the “bigger” in Texas!! We both ate two meals off of it. Best “biggest” ribs the other side of the river, the sides were bigger than the back forty!! And to add to the experience they play Latin music that we got to danced to (love that)- double whammy!! If you’re in the San Antonio area and miss this place to eat, shame on you! You have no rights to compare BBQ. The only down side to this place is it is not located nearer to my home in FL!!!
I wanted to try a lot of things and ordered darn near everything in the menu.
What a fantastic experience! The food is incredible! I mean absolutely fantastic! The service is top notch and everyone is so nice!
Let’s talk price. Half pound of brisket, 2 huge sausages, the Verde burger, half pound of turkey, all 4 sides(large) and a costa(sp?), plus 3 bottles of water…$110
In ohio for lesser food that would be $225-$250.
Well done. 100%recommend.
P.s. Please come to Youngstown, oh!
The ribs were smoky and peppery with a good bit of crust on top, the brisket was pull-apart tender and super flavorful, the sausage had a decent amount of cheese and the spices were excellently blended, and the carnitas were just killer on the taco.
Also had the poblano mac and the potato salad, both a great side item to the meats. And can’t forget the salsa, BBQ sauce, and tortillas! This place ranks above 2M IMO from the ribs and brisket alone, and the atmosphere is very open and chill. Recommend to anyone wanting to try an excellent local BBQ spot.
