Delicious vegan and vegetarian options, with great portion sizes. Sabina is very knowledgeable and reccomends dishes and pairings based on flavors, nutrition, and personal taste. The eggplant and zucchini stew is delicious and hearty and the veggie patty and pumpkinseed patty are my favorites, they are so big it is practically a meal on its own. Would highly reccomend visiting, take your tastebuds on a journey

My experience at Motherland Kitchen was a 10/10. I 100% recommend coming here. The African and Caribbean fusion was an amazing and eye opening taste palette experience. First we were happily welcomed into the restaurant which was awesome because we showed up last minute. The owner is such a friendly, warm inviting person. The food was phenomenal. My boyfriend is still raving about the food saying we should come back frequently. The restaurant is known for vegan food but they also have delicious meat options. I tried the beef patties, oxtail stew, jollof rice, rice and beans, and the corn fufu. Don’t get me started on the numerous options of fufu that really stood out to me and I can’t wait to try them all. I can’t recommend this place enough. Please stop by and support the business. I promise you will not be disappointed. There’s even a couch if you like to lounge and just chill while you eat. Oh and for size reference I added my hand on top of the fufu so you can see how extra large it was. I didn’t take pics of the other full size portions because we were so hungry but everything comes in great size portions. We were able to eat dinner twice with the servings. I highly recommend – do not sleep on this place, go check it out!

Unfortunately, my partner and I were treated unfairly and we were fraudulently overcharged for all food items (a small amount extra added to each food item with no explanation nor opportunity given to check before she charged our card).

I wanted to be open-minded and thought it was simply the African way with how blunt she was in telling us to wait before she took our order because she was cooking, and if we wanted drinks they were in the fridge. But then two other parties came in who were darker skinned than us (we are east asian) and she started saying “dear” and phrasing things more kindly like “if you could do me a favor to look in the fridge for drinks.” Discrimination is not ok, and honestly we should have left before we ordered.

On top of that, prices were outrageous. One small beef stew, one vegetable side stew, and a starch for $47?? And then she skimmed extra — adding $1 extra to the food items and $0.50 extra to the drink. I remember the menu prices since they were already so high, and noticed she added more when we got the receipt after it was charged. I had asked “how much was it?” as she gestured for the credit card at the register, but my trusting partner tapped to pay already. We tipped because we are nervous millennials and were still processing the events.

The beef stew was too salty and I’ll probably never get the flavorless, pudding-textured fufu focino starch ever again, but I can’t comment too much since this isn’t our normal palette.

We tried African food for the first time at a restaurant, Not only did everything feel authentic, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming. It was just a very good vibe. The owner is very much involved and passionate about her place and her food.

I ordered the lamb with greens and Jollof rice. My wife got jerk chicken with fufu. The portion sizes were very good and you can tell the food was made with love. There was so much flavor, spices, and seasoning. The lamb was really impressive, and the greens were more like a sautéed spinach than I was expecting, and it was really really good. The jerk chicken was moist and falling off the bone with a good level of spice and flavor and the fufu. was very nice to try for the first time

thank you for a great first experience and we will definitely be back!

Well, we ordered jerk chicken and curry chicken.. when the curry came out we were told it’s jerk, and when the red dish came out we were told it’s curry. Kind of confusing especially as we are Caribbean so trust we know curry and jerk when we see it. We decided to eat anyway and although colorful, there was no flavor at all.
Establishment is very much mom and pop style with their belongings everywhere except the dining area.
Staff is friendly enough.
We were excited to try, but left disappointed.

We were looking into options while in western MD, and Motherland Kitchen kept popping up! It’s in the oddest of locations, between a Latino church and Estate store, and could easily be missed.

The owner was the hostess, chef, and server. Our bellies were not disappointed when we left, our leftovers reheated deliciously, and we’re excited to use our sauces! The dining area has a “home-y” atmosphere. We had the beef stew, fufu (corn), beef patty, goat, oxtail stew, chicken peanut butter stew, rice & beans, and okra. We would get it all again (and more)!

Driving towards Thurmont, I saw a fascinating little restaurant i knew served perk chicken. On the back from thurmont I took a left & experienced the best the best african/Caribbean jerk chicken since Jamaica

Who served…the magnificent owner & chef Sabina who is magnificent cook & i ate for 3 hours..a little bit of this..a little of that
I tasted like dim sum her entire menu

The peanut butter stew rated 12 out of 10 stars

The curried chicken was the best I have ever had…apparently the recipe of Sabrina’s mother

The Kathi Kathi chickens recipe dates to over sixty ago from Sabina’s village of Cameroon

The 3 green sides sides is freshly sourced + lots of herbs and spices..the recipe is like the secret formula that will die with Sabina unless she willingly shares it with

The Fufu fonio is heavenly & actually “orgasmic” to your tongue & soul

Discover themis wonderful place for 1 or a party.

She told me she often caters parties

Celebrate Thanksgiving, Xmas or new years

The African/Caribbean way

Add some soul to your life and before you die .add Motherland kitchen to your bucket list

What an absolute gem! I can’t believe I missed this place around the Frederick area for so long. The food is made entirely from scratch by a single woman who runs everything herself — and you can feel her passion in every detail. She brings such a holistic approach to preparing and serving food that it turns an ordinary meal into a special experience.
I went for the Thanksgiving meal, which featured a wonderful mix of different flavors and dishes, and everything was incredibly tasty. The friendliness, care, and authenticity here really stand out. Highly recommend checking it out — and if you want to try the Thanksgiving meal, it’s available through the end of December!

Great spot for healthy, anti-inflammatory eating. The menu features fresh, whole foods like wild-caught salmon, leafy greens, quinoa, avocado, and turmeric-seasoned vegetables. Everything is flavorful without heavy sauces or processed ingredients. Portions are satisfying, and you leave feeling energized, not weighed down. Highly recommended for clean, nourishing meals.
