In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. Our menu offers comfort food classics, and our entire menu is offered all day long. Whether you are craving pancakes at 8 pm or pot roast at 8 am – we’ve got something for everyone. A Truly Five-Star Experience at Black Bear Diner!
My wife and I had an absolutely fantastic time at Black Bear Diner—it truly deserves a glowing five-star review! Everything from the food to the service was top-notch, and we left feeling completely satisfied.
The food and portions were great, to put it mildly. We were both impressed by the quality of the cooking and the sheer size of the meals. You definitely get incredible value here, and the comfort food classics were executed perfectly. Speaking of perfect, the coffee was marvelous! It was hot, fresh, and exactly what we needed.
What really set this visit apart, though, was the service. The staff was beyond excellent—so friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. Every single person we interacted with seemed to go out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. On top of that, the entire restaurant was spotless; it was a very clean environment.
If you’re looking for fantastic food, generous portions, marvelous coffee, and service that is truly a cut above the rest in a friendly, clean setting, look no further. I’ll totally recommend Black Bear Diner to everyone! We can’t wait to go back.

Angie was an outstanding server at Black Bear Diner. Despite our late arrival, she was incredibly attentive, polite, and had the brightest smile in the room. Her genuine kindness and excellent service made our experience truly enjoyable. Angie’s positive attitude and professionalism really stood out, making her a highlight of our visit. We are absolutely thrilled with food and service here! The moment you walk in, you are greeted with friendly faces. We had two small children who were so hungry, and our server, Danielle V, was quick to take our order and get our food to us. She was friendly and checked up on us constantly making sure we had everything we needed. Other staff would pass by also making sure we were ok and needed nothing else. Management even made it to our table offering laughs and great service. My kids were delighted! Now to the food! Never a complaint. Everything is cooked to perfection and the taste is as delicious as always! We love coming here and highly recommend!

My boyfriend and I celebrated Valentine’s Day here, and it was an amazing experience. Other than my company, the best part of this experience was the service. Our waiter’s name was Ethan and he was perfect! Very attentive without being overbearing, super polite, and seemed to genuinely care about our needs; 10/10, would request his service again. As far as food and drinks go, another 10/10. The food was ready fairly quickly, served at a good temperature, and everything tasted fresh and well made. I got a cup of coffee (they had just made a fresh batch), and my boyfriend got a huckleberry shake, which he enjoyed very much. Overall a great experience!

Not sure how this place has 4 stars. The food was horrible. Nothing is fresh, the meat was old or frozen. The cornbread was hard , not moist at all. What is the point of putting green leaf on the plate if it’s brown and wilted?!? Pancakes were burned but raw inside?!? There was literally 3 customers, so it wasn’t bzy at all. So no excuse for the poor food.Please go some somewhere else instead of wasting your money here.

First time visit, there was a line of people waiting, we proceeded to sign in, but as we were only 2, we were seated immediately. We were just seated when Rudy walked by and greeted us and asked if our drink order had been taken, we said no and that it was our first visit. Rudy explained he was not our waiter, but took it upon himself to explain the menu and bring our drinks. Rudy did not have to do this. Hats off to him. Rudy exemplifies great customer service. Thanks again Rudy. Next came our waitress, Patty, she also took the time to explain the menu and gave us her favorite menu picks. We took her advice. I ordered the biggest breakfast plate, The Grizzly. It contains 2 sweet cream pancakes, I substituted them with french toast, 3 over easy eggs, 2 thick slices of bacon, 2 sausage links, & a smoked ham steak, and finally I selected a side of grits with cheese & bacon as per Patty’s suggestion. Thanks Patty you were not wrong.I ordered the endless cup of coffee. Nicki selected the 2 egg classic combo, 2 over easy eggs, 4 slices of thick bacon, and the strip cut hash browns. She had the sweet tea.Needless to say the serving sizes are Definitely worth the price. The food was amazing, our compliments to the cooks. Finally after an amazing breakfast, the front manager, Ciara, came over to our table and greeted us. Ciara talked about the diner, inquired about our experience and thanked us for our visit. Regardless of how long this place has been around, it was our very first visit and it Will Not be our last. The friendliness and warmth of all the staff we encountered was genuine and sincere. They truly know the concept of Great customer Service. Thank you all. We will definitely be back. By the way Ciara, if we misspelled your name, sorry, as this is how we spell our daughter’s name.

My first time at Black Bear Diner, and since the moment I stepped into the restaurant, a little girl greeted me with a huge smile. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you can enjoy a breakfast with giant portions. The food was delicious, and let me tell you something about the biscuits—they were enormous! The gravy was the perfect touch. Something that caught my attention, and it’s very rare to see, is managers interacting with their customers. But this restaurant is the exception; it was wonderful to see how the manager approach and chat with each table , talking as if they had known each other for years. Black Bear Diner, thank you so much for this great experience. I hope to come back soon and enjoy your food again.

Went in for lunch today for the first time. Didn’t know the newspaper things were the menu, so just ordered the chicken burger basket that I saw when walking in. Service was good, the hostess was polite and friendly. But it took over 30 minutes to get our food. Mind you I have an hour lunch and had to rush eating to get back to work on time. The place wasn’t too busy but it looked like only 2 guys were cooking while there were 4 or 5 hostesses.
