The owner moves around the room the way a hummingbird works a flower patch—quick, attentive, occasionally startling. He checks on every table as if he’s personally responsible for our emotional well-being, which, in my case that night, he absolutely was.
The food? Good. Good enough that Abuelos, may it rest in peace, probably closed out of embarrassment. That place was a public disservice—like someone watched a documentary about Mexico once and thought, I can cook that. Puerto Vallarta, though, makes an honest effort. The mole, for instance, is clearly engineered for Wichita’s less-than-Latin clientele, but it still passes as mole in the same way an off-brand soda still tastes vaguely like cola.
I went on a night when my emotions were doing the full Cirque du Soleil routine. Fortunately, their margarita—industrial in size, medicinal in effect—smoothed everything into a tolerable blur. For one evening, at least, life felt manageable, and I have Puerto Vallarta to thank for that.
To top off the S tier food, the service was perfect. I recently renewed my driver’s license and accidentally left my temporary paper ID on the table. It was accidentally bussed and thrown in the trash (through ZERO fault of the server, this was completely my own mistake). I called them shortly after realizing I had left it and one of the owners DUG THROUGH THE TRASH OUT BACK AND FOUND MY ID. I was literally in tears at the kindness she showed me through her willingness to do that. I cannot wait to return!! Truly amazing people running this restaurant.
Went back tonight for the 2nd time for their national taco day special. The waitress was didn’t know about the special. We ordered our tacos and I ordered a margarita. The tacos were good, I enjoyed the chicken and the pork tacos. The service tonight was maybe having an off night. I never did get the margarita I ordered and they never refilled out chips and salsa. They were not busy either. Tacos were good though.
Went for the first time tonight for dinner. The place is pretty small and seat yourself. But the servers were all very friendly and helpful and service was pretty quick. They bring out chips and salsa and bean dip. The salsa was pretty good. The beans were just beans. Added a bit of salsa to them and they were . We got the crazy nachos for appetizer. I liked that they have 3 different meats which helped my decide which meat I liked best to get in my burrito. They could have stood to have more cheese, but were still good. I got the smothered carnitas burrito with both red and green sauces. It was very good and super filling. My husband got the steak chimichanga burrito. He said it was very good too. We well definitely have to come back.
First timer at Puerto Vallarta and it won’t be our last. Tequila chicken and the four tacos platter (I can’t remember the name) were absolutely delicious! The thing that surprised me most was the bean dip that they bring out with their chips and salsa. I’m not a bean kinda gal, ever. But I devoured two sauce bowls of this thing. Must try! Service was exceptional! Heard they even have a brunch with 10 cent mimosas. Will have to stop by and check that out!
