Duke’s Grocery is a DC favorite known especially for their burgers.
They’re an English-style pub known for having one of the best burgers in the city.
Even though I’ve been to Western Market several times recently, this was my first visit to Duke’s Grocery. I came specifically to experience their holiday pop-up, part of Duke’s Destination Dreamland series, which runs through the first week of January 2026.
Each of the five Duke’s Grocery locations is hosting a different holiday theme. Since this is my year of Wonderland, I had to visit the Alice in Wonderland–themed pop-up at the Western Market location in Foggy Bottom.
The space was decorated throughout with Alice in Wonderland characters, and there’s a themed cocktail menu with playful, story-inspired drinks. I sat at the bar and ordered a burger and a cocktail, which arrived in a red heart-shaped champagne flute, which was a fun, unexpected detail.
There are a few photo moments scattered around the space. It was busy, but it didn’t feel overwhelming, even with a private holiday party happening at the same time.
The vibe was casual and festive without being over the top. Not a spectacle — just a cozy, themed pub experience that still feels like a neighborhood spot.
As for the food: the burger comes in just two prepared styles. I ordered mine medium-well, and it was solid. The fries were good, too. Simple, satisfying, and I can absolutely see why people love it.
Pro tip: Visit all five Duke’s Grocery holiday pop-ups, get your passport stamped at each location, and you’ll receive a special invite to an event in January 2026.

Solid visit for a burger and great happy hour deals. We went for dinner and the burgers were great, truffle Mac was excellent, and the bread pudding was lovely. Service was good, drinks were cheap, and atmosphere seemed dive bar meets knights of the round table with a few other oddities. I’d say, stop in if you’re looking for brunch, a burger, or great drink specials.

I went to Duke’s Grocery in Foggy Bottom and had an overall great time with friends. The service was decent, though our waitress wasn’t very attentive and we ended up waiting quite a while for the check, which was a little frustrating. That said, the burgers are excellent.
The star of the menu was definitely their famous Proper Burger, which was juicy, flavorful, and worth every bit of the hype. Duke’s has a fun, laid-back vibe that feels equally great for casual after-work drinks or just hanging out with friends on a weeknight. Despite the slow service, I left happy and satisfied, and will definitely go back.

I placed an online to-do order after exploring the African American Museum, Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. Website was easy to use and it took about 20 mins before my order was ready. My interaction with staff was brief but very pleasant. Burger and fries were delicious.

Went on a non busy day, so we were seated as soon as we entered and the food itself was good. Unfortunately, the customer service really ruined the experience. After we ordered, no one checked on our table the entire time. We had to ask for water refills ourselves, and tables that arrived after us received their order before our appetizer. After finishing our appetizer, we were wondering where our main course was and finally asked an employee what was going on. Turns out our food had already been ready but just hadn’t been brought out until we asked. It was also very difficult to get anyone’s attention when we needed things like napkins, water refills, a to go box, or the check. Employees would look in our direction but wouldn’t come over to ask if we needed anything. At one point we even saw extra napkins being given to tables around us while we had none and had to ask for them. The girl who seated us and took our order was nice at first, but she never came back to check on us once during the meal. When we finished eating, we tried multiple times to get someone’s attention to pay and eventually had to call out across the room for help. The food was good, but the lack of service and attention made the overall experience very frustrating. We honestly felt like we were being ignored. We weren’t staring at employees just to stare. We were trying to get someone’s attention because we needed help.

Every once in a while, there’s an establishment that has an identity of its own. Duke’s identity is its simplicity. The menu is straightforward and limited. No fancy footwork. Predictably wholesome, quality food that tastes like the best Hollywood action movies – satisfying yet not overly cerebral, and almost always forgettable – and I mean that in the best way. You don’t find yourself wondering how they made it taste like that. It tastes like it should, and that’s the beauty of it. The service is almost always well above the admittedly low bar set by DC. The fries are exceptionally good – and yet they taste exactly like fries.

This place is fun and the food is fantastic! The burger was so juicy and tasty, and the fries are excellent and perfectly crispy. I went for lunch and they were super quick. But all of that is surpassed by the service. From the host’s first greeting to my amazing waitress and her personal recommendations (both food and things to do in the city), the staff at the Foggy Bottom location is incredibly friendly and attentive. (Side note: the crème brûlée is one of the best I’ve had at a restaurant!)

This is another awesome location for Duke’s Grocery. We generally come here for the burgers and other menu options. Making a reservation is generally a good idea. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Service is good as well. We enough the ambiance and the food here. Among our favorites are:
The Proper Burger
Fish and Chips
White Truffle Mac and Cheese
Fired Up Chicken
Taken With Liberty
The desserts are nice too and good enough to share.
The cocktails can be a bit of a miss sometimes.
The consistency of the quality of the food and service makes it our top spot for burgers and the other menu items ❤️

I have visited Duke’s a handful of times and have really enjoyed it every time. The food is always delicious and the fresh squeezed orange juice is perfection. You really can’t go wrong ordering anything on the menu but I do highly recommend the Proper Breakfast Sarnie or the Proper Burger. Chef’s kiss is what those two things are.
Side note, I often like to point out restaurants I think are great for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd dates. In my personal opinion, breakfast is the best time for a date because you are at your most energized, breakfast is super casual so less stress, and a post-breakfast stroll around the park getting to know each other is perfect. I would highly recommend Duke’s for a 3rd date.
