Walking in and sitting down at our table gave me mixed impressions. The name of the restaurant sounds elevated, and the restaurant interior was fairly nice, (wood floors and brick walls) but it had some strange decor that I didn’t find all that fitting or attractive, and the music was not appropriate for the vibe that I think they are trying to go for.
Starting with the drinks: I ordered the Black Raspberry Lemon Drop, and my mom ordered the 84 Fall Cosmo. Our server knew nothing about alcohol and mixed up our drinks upon delivery. We caught the mix-up and traded drinks. Our drinks were good.
Moving on to the food. We ordered the Calimari appetizer, and it was pretty good. It was cut into twisted calimari strips and served with a sweet chili sauce.
The entrées however were a miss. My aunt and I both ordered the Seafood Risotto. The risotto was extremely al dente as you can see in the photo I posted, and both of our entrées were cold. It was as if the restaurant prepped the risotto earlier in the morning and didn’t finish cooking it to order. The seafood was hot, so that was cooked fresh. But everything else on the plate was cold. My mom has experience in making risotto, and she mentioned that the risotto wasn’t cooked with enough stock, nor did it cook long enough to release the starches needed to achieve that creamy consistency ideal in risotto. She was 100% correct.
My mom ordered the Salmon Niçoise since that was the best fit for her dietary restrictions. We tried asking the server about this dish because we were quite confused by the description. Our waitress had no idea what niçoise was and mentioned that working at Flint & Stave was the first time she had heard of niçoise. My mom got her dish, and her whole meal, including the salmon, was served cold. The description on the menu said the salmon was grilled, so why was it served cold? She said her potatoes were not fresh and were most likely a few days old. Her veggies did not look good. As we discussed our meals, she said she didn’t enjoy a single item on her plate. To be honest, this dish should probably be removed from the menu because it was so terrible.
By this point, we were all so turned off by our entrées that we decided to skip dessert and head out. This restaurant has good potential to be something great. It just has a ways to go in refining their menu and honing in on putting out a good meal and a good experience.
To start the hostess was very rude. It was busy and the place was packed. We asked how long for a table inside. She seemed annoyed with the question and said if we wanted to eat there our only option was outside. This isn’t usually an issue for us but it was about to pour. The awnings on the sidewalks didn’t really cover the tables but we decided to try and eat quick. We took the table and saw she seated any other party that came in about 10 mins later. No one else was turned away, had to wait or eat outside. I also don’t think she told the other staff that she seated anyone out there because it took forever to be acknowledged and order. The server was surprised to see people at the table. Once the server knew we were there she did her best to be accommodating until it started raining.
We tried to not let this spoil our meal. We hoped the food would make us for these other inconveniences. For drinks we had the rose’, very good, and the apple mule, not so good, was missing the muddled apples so this tasted like pucker. To start we had the orange sesame crispy cauliflower. It was delicious, perfect crispy breading that didn’t get soggy from the sauce. The sauce was just sweet enough and covered up the cauliflower flavor which delighted my significant other. It was by far the best dish of the night. Next was the Korean street tacos with steak. This left us confused. There was nothing Korean on the plate. The meat wasn’t marinated and didn’t utilize salt and pepper. the pico was also tasteless and the taco shells were mostly
full of tomatoes. We didn’t even attempt to finish them after a few bites. Also worth noting at this point its started to rain and 10 mins later started to downpour. We were never given salt and pepper and our server had kind of forgotten about us. The final course had a lot of promise and used high quality ingredients. Sad to say there was a huge seasoning issue again. The scallops were fresh and big. They should have been seared more, on both sides, and needed salt. The risotto was a good texture, there was a good amount of crab and the flavors went together well. But this was also missing basic seasoning.
We asked for the check and were offered to be moved inside. We were soaking wet, it was a little too late. I am not sure if they had a bad night. We were upset that our meal and experience didn’t match the other great reviews.
