Reviews
Staff was outstanding. They were articulate, knew the menu well and presentation was excellent. The menu was unique with some great options. Overall decor and ambience was great as well. The king crabs legs were maybe the best I’ve ever had.
Now, the negative.
I have high hopes for the restaurant, but they are not ready to have their doors open to the public. We were overwhelmed by the stench of raw sewer when we arrived. They must have a serious plumbing or dry drain trap issue. It was awful for our entire 2.5 hour dinner. Shrimp on the seafood platter was undercooked and difficult to chew (not rubbery). When I cracked the lobster claw open, it drained 4 ounces of rotten water onto my plate. The vinegar/rotten smell was so bad I had to wash my hands.
Given time, this place should be ok but the kitchen has some serious work to do.
My main concern was the overcooking of much of the seafood I had. In today’s well understood science of food and techniques of cooking, there is no excuse for overcooked proteins. If I can cook similar items in my kitchen far better than what I experienced, then I have no reason to spend $150 (without drinks) for two at this restaurant.
Pros:
– Ambience, service and aesthetics
– Menu selection is substantial (this could be a con also as a large selection without excellent execution is a disadvantage)
– drink menu is broad
Cons;
– overcooked seafood (this is unacceptable in a seafood restaurant)
– oversalted food (this is unfortunately the case with 98% of restaurants and I don’t understand why)
– burnt toasted bread “spears” (I have a toaster oven at home that I can produce toasted irregularly shaped bread with perfect results every time)
– menu selection is too large (over 50 items), they need to focus and produce fewer items that are fantastic.
Cons: the entire place had a stench of seafood. I realize its an open kitchen design but I have never recall being so overwhelm by the smell in other establishments. The food itself was uninspiring, bland, and cooked incorrectly. The oyster meat on the Katama Bay were almost non-existent. It could have been just the day’s delivery so I wont hold it against the restaurant. My gf chilean sea bass was burnt and the fish was overdone inside. My mussel chowder bowl and main entree of linguine & clams left a strong after-taste. And they incorrectly charged me for one of the glasses of wine.
Pros: the interior decor and ambiance has SO much potential. It just needs to be under new cullinary management. And our waiter D*** was great. He needs to go work for a better restaurant.
On a side note, the couple next to our table spoke to the manager about their disappoint in the meal while we were finishing up.
I’ll get right to it. When you read this, you’re going to think that I work here or that my brother owns the restaurant. Neither is true and I doubt my review will do this place justice. If you want to experience a restaurant that cares about every detail & the chef is invested in preparing top quality food you will not be let down with 801 Fish. This place executed at a superior level in all aspects of dining & experience. I am impressed.
First, when I placed my reservation on OpenTable, I was very specific about the table I wanted. Some restaurants neglect this detail. The hostess followed my request to. a. T. As soon as we were seated at the table I was specific in requesting, I knew it was going to be a great dinner.
What I ordered:
Manhattan
2 Oysters
Caviar
Whole Roasted Branzino
1/2lb Crab Legs
Actually, I ordered the trout. When I ordered the waitress informed me that they were out. I was really disappointed and not happy. A fish restaurant out of trout??!! The waitress went over to discuss with the Chef. The Chef confidently assured her that the Branzino would taste just as good if not better than their trout. He was right! It was better than any trout I’ve had. I tipped my proverbial cap to him when he came over to check on the meal. Both the waitress and the Chef couldn’t have handled it better.
Price: Be prepared to spend as much as you would at Capital Grille
Drinks: The manhattan I ordered was mixed perfectly with strong hints of walnut bitters, wine selection ++.
Menu: You won’t find anything else like it in KC. So many choices and options you’ll want to try it all
Service Staff: Knowledgeable, great recommendations & an acute attention to detail
Food: For me, I appreciated the presentation. There’s a real confidence in your product when the Chef filets the fresh fish in front of you. Also, they removed the fresh crab leg meat and placed it in a dish. Another subtle detail that was impressive.
On a closing note, it seems this place is known for it’s oysters, which they have quite the selection. But, I don’t think 801 fish gets enough credit for everything else on the menu and if you don’t like oysters you might not consider this place.
Oh and on a side note, the music is a fantastic mix of relaxing beats.
MENU – Great selections
PREPARATION – Who serves a large plate with a tiny piece of fish on it for $42? Really?! They didn’t have some mashed potatoes or green beans to fill up the plate? I realize that the veggies are purchased separately, but geesh, they could have served that tiny piece of fish on a coffee saucer and still had room for a baked potato. It’s OK to have high prices, but don’t give the customer the illusion that he is getting no value for his money. Fill up the plate with something!
STAFF – A manager hovering by the entrance door is not a good look. He should have come around to the tables, introduced himself, and checked on things. Our waiter was excellent, but really, almost too good. When a waiter becomes too ‘kiss assy’ they lose points in my book. I just want a waiter to do their job, be attentive, and not to be involved in small talk. Our waiter was telling us stories about his neighbors and dog. We are not paying $200 to hear stories from our waiter. We came for a nice quiet evening out. The waiter was not really invited unless he is OK splitting the check 3 ways.
RECOMMENDATIONS: I certainly hope the owner/staff reads my comments and acts on them. There is too much competition in this city and a poorly run restaurant will not last. Perhaps that is why they had to have a Groupon. You don’t see J. Alexander restaurant involved with Groupon or coupons. Good restaurants don’t need to.
Kathleen was our waitress, very friendly and helpful as she greeted and walked us thru the menu. Kathleen was helpful providing extra water cup for our toddler to play and all. 8:30pm when we went in, and it was 9 30pm by the time we had our entree. From 9:40pm the waitress was waiting for us to close. So she checking us too frequently to close and then when we are done she didn’t offer us a dessert menu.
The worst part, she forgot to get our fries boxed. When asked she went in and got the box, miraculously they turned into onion rings by the time we reached home.
