Reviews
My wife and I recently enjoyed an exquisite dinner at 801 Chophouse, a truly top-tier dining experience that began and ended perfectly. I highly recommend securing a reservation, as this is the kind of place you don’t want to miss.
Appetizer: A Masterpiece Crab Cake
We started the evening with the Maryland Jumbo Crab Cake, which was, without exaggeration, one of the best I have ever tasted. It had an amazing buttery flavor that genuinely melted in the mouth. The crab meat was remarkably sweet and succulent—an absolute triumph and a fantastic start to the meal.
Exceptional Salads
For our intermediate course, I chose the Wedge Salad. I requested it modified to hold the blue cheese dressing and crumbles, opting for ranch served on the side. Even with the modification, it was superb, featuring fresh Campari tomatoes and beautifully smoked bacon lardon. The smoky flavor of the bacon was incredibly intense and fresh, giving the salad a rustic, authentic touch. My wife opted for the classic Caesar Salad, which she thoroughly enjoyed for its light dressing, crisp romaine, quality croutons, and a substantial, nicely sized Parmesan cheese wafer, topped off with anchovies.
Delectable Entrees
Our main courses were equally impressive. I had the Pan Seared Hawaiian Ahi Tuna. It was cooked so perfectly that you could literally cut it with the side of a fork. The dish was nothing short of amazing and completely delectable, with a complementary sauce and perfectly sautéed vegetables.
My wife’s choice, the Mowi Salmon, was pan-seared to absolute perfection. It was amazingly cooked, remarkably flakey, and the crust provided the perfect savory stability to the incredibly tender interior.
The Must-Have Side
We shared a large side of the Maple Bourbon Glazed Carrots. I cannot recommend this dish enough if you enjoy carrots. They were very nicely done and provided a wonderful, sweet-savory complement to both the seafood entrées.
Sweet Endings
We concluded the meal with two fantastic desserts. I had what I consider the best Carrot Cake I’ve ever eaten—so much so that I had to take an extra serving home! It was served perfectly with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. My wife enjoyed the rich, yet surprisingly light, Brooklyn Blackout Cake. It offered a very smooth and delicious chocolate flavor, beautifully complemented by a creamy mousse.
801 Chophouse is a must-visit for anyone looking for a truly memorable dining experience marked by quality ingredients and flawless execution.
Ever had a dining experience so perfect it becomes your measuring stick for all others? That’s what happened the first time I slid into a window seat at 801 Chophouse in Leawood. Now my Sundays have a sacred schedule: yoga, nap, and the best steak in Kansas City.
I used to think all high-end steakhouses were basically the same until 801’s Sunday Supper menu came into my life. The moment you walk in, the classic 1920s steakhouse ambiance wraps around you like a warm blanket – all rich wood, white tablecloths, and that unmistakable energy of a place that takes its craft seriously.
My ritual begins with the 801 Wedge – a seemingly simple salad that somehow transcends its ingredients with a blue cheese dressing so creamy and flavorful it should be illegal in at least seven states! Then comes the star: a 6oz Filet Mignon De Burgo that’s so tender you could cut it with a stern look. Paired with their garlic mashed potatoes and perfectly grilled asparagus, it’s the kind of meal that makes conversation stop and eyes close involuntarily.
Meanwhile, my husband follows his own tradition: caesar salad (which he insists is the benchmark by which all others should be judged), the Mowi Salmon that converts even the most dedicated carnivores, and their housemade sorbet that somehow tastes more like the fruit than the fruit itself.
The experience is elevated further by their GreenCoat staff – professionals who understand the delicate art of attentive service without hovering. They remember your preferences, make spot-on recommendations, and somehow know exactly when you need them and when you don’t.
Insider tip: Request a window seat in the bar area for the perfect blend of ambiance and people-watching. And don’t skip the crème brûlée – that perfectly caramelized top giving way to silky custard is worth every calorie.
Some people have Sunday football, others have family dinners – we have 801 Chophouse, where USDA Prime isn’t just a grade of meat, it’s a philosophy that extends to every aspect of the experience. After all, why settle for an ordinary Sunday when you can have one that’s rare and well-done at the same time?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
However, I digress. We’re now seated in a booth about 20 ft from the door which leads to the frigid outdoors from the storm rolling in and we’re pretty well protected from the cold air. I don’t need any of my extra layers so we’re good there. Comfortable table is secured!
Now we have our menus and hubby and I are discussing what we want and what we think we may need to get through the next day at least. We’re approached for our drinks by one of our servers as they work in teams. I order a boulevard wheat and hubby orders a whiskey smash. I’m sad to say no photos of the drinks but his whiskey smash was probably one of if not the best whiskey based drink I’ve ever tasted (not a huge whiskey fan personally) but the mint blackberry combination was just amazing. My beer was a beer lol.
So our second server approaches is to take our food order. I am so sorry I don’t have names. I am awful at remembering them. But we explain a little of what we’re doing and that we will require boxes and she gives some guidance on about how much we should order to get through the next night. So we put in our order. She asks if we want our soup with the appetizer and explain we’d like it spread out and she is like no problem. Our food was timed to perfection.
Onto the food!
Meatballs – Not italian style with marinara. It comes with a mushroom sauce that was amazing. It had some slight heat to it as well which was surprisingly pleasant.
After the meatballs the chowder came next.
The chowder was also delicious!!! Pieces of lobster in a slightly spicy corn chowder with a side of crackers that you can add or not add to your liking.
At this point I’m looking at hubby going I think the bar is too high. There’s no way the food is going to continue to be this delicious. He’s all like let’s just enjoy it because you never know. You never can know but we’ve had that disappointment before… I can certainly say the rest of the meal was just as epic as the starters.
So our main courses come out. We each ordered a 12oz filet knowing we were having left overs both are cooked to perfection. Mine was rare with a crust. Hubby requested medium rate and his was cooked too perfection as well. I had a topping of mushroom sauce and cognac butter. This sauce was the same as the meatballs. I was not disappointed. Hubby had a topping of au poivre which was also very delicious. We each requested these on the side to be able to decided how little our much we wanted with our steak. This was also a recommendation from our server. Gold star to her!
Onto the sides!
Garlic mashed potatoes were delicious. They were tangy, super creamy, and definitely full of garlic. It was everything I could’ve hoped and dreamed of for garlic mashed potatoes.
Baked potato was delicious as well. It was perfectly cooked. The bacon and cheese were of high quality. I appreciated that the butter and sour cream came on the side.
The macaroni and cheese what can I say? The pasta was perfectly cooked it wasn’t soggy but a perfect al dente so it had bite that went very well with their cheese sauce and bread crumb topping. Once again so delicious.
Dessert= divine
