When 4 Spice first opened (taking the place of the Masala location here) the food was fantastic. It was spiced appropriately and the service was very good. Unfortunately, they have gone downhill tremendously. The last few times I have been here, one of the servers had trouble with the card reader on the register. It took 30 minutes just to pay for my bill. The curry was extremely watery and appeared old. The last time I ordered in, they did not even have basmati rice. I ended up getting short-grain Chinese take-out type rice. Agree with the above, save yourself the trouble. There are many other excellent Indian restaurants in Lexington.

I’ve been to just about every Indian Restaurant in Lexington, and this one is by far the worst. If you plan on eating dinner here, do not make any other plans. It took 30 minutes to receive an appetizer of vegetable pakora – a dish that is by no means complicated. Our dinner took 1 hour and 20 minutes to arrive and only because we got tired of waiting and asked for our food to go. It took them 15 minutes just to package our food. To top it all off, our naan bread was still doughy in the middle, definitely under cooked. Once we arrived home to eat, we threw the food out. The rice tasted like cardboard, there were no spices in my lamb curry, my husband’s chana masala had no spice whatsoever (he asked for the hottest they could make it), and our friend’s shrimp masala had no sauce??!!!. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. Some additional info: the bathroom was dirty with cleaning bottles littered everywhere, and half the restaurant had not been picked up from the day before (boxes and trash everywhere). Our waitress even complained about the chefs fighting with each other. Save your money and go someplace else. I can get better service at a McDonald’s.

QUICK NOTE: If you are looking at this review to decide on an Indian Restaurant, I have eaten at every one of them in town. My favorite, as a connoisseur of Indian Cuisine (my specialty) is Taj India. Regardless of where you go, do not go here.

I absolutely love Indian cuisine, I have tried it from many locations around the US and elsewhere (though sadly I have not made it to India yet). I have never been as disappointed in a restaurant as this on.

I experienced many problems there, from the 2 person staff failing to provide adequate service, the environment of the restaurant down to clearly unused cleaning supplies lining the bathroom floor (probably due to being understaffed), and more, but a great deal of this could be overlooked or blamed on me in some way or another.

The key problem, and the reason for a 1 star review was the food. Their menu was diverse enough, offering a few items from each variety of cuisine. This seemed to be fine, so we ordered. We ordered Vegetable Pakora, Chana Masala, Naan, a Shrimp Masala, and Lamb Curry. We each ordered a spiciness level to our own taste, myself ordering my Chana Masala as hot as they could make it, especially after I asked if they used ghost peppers, to be answered that they only have Habeneros. The vegetable pakora arrived first. It was minuscule and laden with grease. The fresh flavors were fried out of it and all I could taste was oil with a hint of destroyed cilantro. Their chutney was almost like water, completely flavorless and fluid. By the time our food came (over an hour) the chana masala was mild, INCREDIBLY mild. I sampled the other dishes we ordered. It was as if our order was completely wrong. The Shrimp was without any sauce (despite the description in the menu mentioning a masala sauce) and it was by far the spiciest despite the person who ordered it asking for it to be very mild. That said, the shrimp was still mild by even American standards. The Lamb curry was lightly spiced and bland. My Chana masala was so incredibly mild and bland in flavor that I did not even eat it and proceeded to throw it away (after boxing it to take it home, I was not rude). The Naan was so under-cooked the center was still raw dough, this was also disposed of in a trash can.

All in all, we were able to eat the shrimp, which was nothing like it was described, and the lamb curry, which was nothing special. For the 3 of us to eat, it was over $55, (over 60 after tip).

There is no reason to go here for the following reasons:

They are understaffed and it shows in service time.
They are overpriced.
Their food tastes like an American and an Indian chef fought over flavors, no one won.
The place is disgusting if you look beyond the table you are sat at.

As a side note. When I complained about the naan being not fully cooked, I was returned with a statement that really sums up the experience. “I’m sorry about that,” the waitress said, “but I do not know how to give a refund”. I did not ask for a refund for the record, and I told her not to give me one. There was a sign on the door asking us to write a review on google, and so I am.

This place used to be Masala, and bought out by a new owner. At first it was good, but the place has gone downhill so much we don’t go there any more. Serving sizes are small, but prices are high. Food is average, and service isn’t that friendly either. There a much better choices in Lexington.

Absolutely amazing tasting Indian food if you catch then on the right day when they cook with the neat they advertise. On other days beware, there were only 2 persons in the whole restaurant. One cooking and the other doing everything else. It took a stupid amount of time to get the food.

The food was tasteless. The name of the restaurant is spice but they don’t know how to use spices at all.
And on top of that, they have dirty bathrooms which are clogged at 12pm with cockroaches in the bathroom.

I have eaten at every Indian restaurant in Lexington and this is hands down the BEST one around. I highly recommend to anyone who thinks Masala and Curry House are disgusting.

Do not go here. It’s very dirty. I think they live here and they don’t clean up. Also, filled with smoke. But I must say, the food is pretty good.
