Visited here for the first time recently. It’s quite a lovely restaurant aesthetically. The staff was super friendly. The menu was different for my palate, but what I ordered was good. Bang, bang shrimp was my favorite, the pear was a surprise!

I’ve lived in Powhatan long enough to remember when there were more cows than traffic lights, and I don’t say that as a complaint. There’s something about a small town that teaches you patience. You notice things. You remember places. And you learn very quickly which businesses are here for the right reasons and which ones won’t last. 1933 Public House is the kind of place that lasts.

My wife and I went for dinner on a Thursday evening not too long ago. It was one of those cold Virginia nights where you’re grateful for somewhere warm to sit. From the moment we walked in, it just felt comfortable. Not flashy, not trying too hard. Just warm wood, soft lighting, and people who seemed genuinely happy to be there. The young lady at the front greeted us kindly and seated us right away. No fuss, no confusion.

Our server was polite, attentive without hovering, and knew the menu well. At my age, I appreciate when someone can answer a question directly without turning it into a performance. He gave us recommendations, checked on us at the right times, and otherwise let us enjoy our evening.

The food was excellent. You could tell care had gone into it. Everything tasted fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and properly seasoned. Nothing overly complicated, just well-executed dishes made with quality ingredients. That’s harder to find than people realize. These days, too many places rely on shortcuts, and you can taste it. Not here.

What struck me most, though, was the atmosphere. People were relaxed. Families talking, couples enjoying dinner, folks at the bar having a quiet drink. It felt like a place that belonged here. Like it had always been part of the community, even if it hasn’t.

I’ve been back several times since, and the experience has remained consistent. That says a lot. Anyone can have a good night. It takes real effort and pride to make sure every night is a good one.

Powhatan is lucky to have 1933 Public House. It’s the kind of place you bring friends when they visit, and the kind of place you return to again and again.

This was our first visit to this establishment and we can’t wait to return. Erica was phenomenal! She took time to share more about the restaurant, the specials, happy hours, wine Wednesday, etc. We are new to the area, the entire staff were so friendly & welcoming. The restaurant is super clean and beautifully decorated. We decided to try brunch and had no regrets. I personally loved the mimosa bar! My husband had the French toast and it was delicious. My son had the breakfast burger and couldn’t finish it as it was huge. Also, the bread basket they bring out had homemade biscuits & scones! I think we could have made a meal just out of that. The portion size are large and could be shared. We are excited to come back for dinner. Highly recommended this establishment and a huge thanks to Erika for the warm welcome to the community.

Enjoyed brunch at this restaurant this morning. May was an excellent server and made us feel right at home and not rushed. The mimosas were great but the bloody Mary’s way too spicy for us. (And that was without the jalapeño). All four of us truly enjoyed our food and drinks. Thank you kitchen staff for a great meal and beautiful presentation.

This was our first visit and we were delighted with the experience from the moment we stepped in the door. We were seated at our table immediately. The décor was simple elegance and the space was open and inviting. Our table had a slight wobble but was correctly immediately by our attentive waiter. Food was delicious and served promptly. Excellent desserts!! Will definitely visit again!

Fun place to go –– like Cheers, “everybody knows your name.” Bang bang shrimp are our favorites. All food is excellent. Decor is rustic modern, lighting is perfect. We always have a great meal and a great time. Patrick and the staff are the best, always ready to serve. It’s great to have a “date-night” kind of place right in Powhatan. Our group of four visits twice a month. It’s a popular place!

This was our first visit to 1933, we had booked a reservation and were seated immediately. The wait staff were professional, informative and personable. We ordered the fish and chips and the American burger. The food was wonderful, cooked perfectly and the wait time was reasonable for the quality. We also tried a few of the deserts which were amazing as well. I’ve been to restaurants that I would pay double for the service and food quality we experienced here. We will definitely be returning.

This is a great brunch spot! Our whole experience was fantastic from start to finish. I took my dad here for his birthday, and we both loved the food, atmosphere, and service. Erica is the best. She is so warm and welcoming. She really made my dad feel special on his big day. Brunch comes with your choice of a fresh fruit cup or soup of the day and a plate of bread. Said breads were the best, moist, melt in your mouth blueberry scones (2), a raspberry scone, and 2 buttermilk style biscuits with whipped butter. I could eat the blueberry scones every day – they are that good, and I typically don’t like scones because they typically are dry. After enjoying the bread items and the fresh fruit, we both had the French toast, which also came with scrambled eggs and bacon. All items were really tasty and good portions. I had to take my French toast home because I was stuffed. I highly recommend stopping by and getting brunch with friends or family.

Love this restaurant. Decided to return with friends to celebrate 3 retirements. They seated us in a quiet corner in the main dining room so we could have conversation. Was happy that we had same server from our previous visit. He’s funny but professional and knows the menu to make knowledgeable recommendations. Started off w/ appetizers and wine (2 bottles finished) & had the short rib fresh from the oven that melted in your mouth. My friend had a filet cooked to perfection as was the salmon his wife had. Topped it off with a warm apple hand pie w/ homemade ice cream and a pot au cream. Nothing was left behind. We keep coming back and had yet to be disappointed.
