The highlights of the meal were the absolutely phenomenal bread and the Death By Chocolate cake for dessert. If you come to this restaurant- do not miss the Death By Chocolate. It’s incredibly light and flavorful- decadently delicious.
My B-51 cocktail was also lovely. Our side of Sautéed Local Mushrooms was delicious and I do recommend that.
Our server was attentive and warm, which was much appreciated.
Otherwise, unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed with our meals.
The Crispy Fried Calamari was obviously frozen calamari with a quite heavy fry on it. The truffle dip didn’t have any truffle that we could taste.
The Three Cheese Onion Soup was fine, but not amazing. There was so much bread and onion that there was scarcely any broth.
We splurged on the 8oz Wagyu Center cut Filet Mignon and I’m not sure how that is justified to be described as Wagyu. I’ve had more tender and flavorful Filet Mignon at half that price.
My husband’s 8oz Wagyu Center cut Filet Mignon had a fish flavor to it, as though it’d been cooked right next to salmon.
Our dining companion’s Jumbo Shrimp with garlic & herb butter spaghetti was better than our steaks, but just the pasta part. The shrimp was so over-cooked and rubbery as to be practically inedible.
The Truffle & Parmesan Fries were just okay. Frozen fries with some parmesan sprinkled on them.
I couldn’t in good conscious rate the food lower than 3 stars based on how delicious the bread and cake were, but I wouldn’t return here because the price does not in any way reflect the bulk of the quality of the food you will be receiving.
Over-cooked shrimp and a steak that tastes like fish at this price-point? Unacceptable.
As for the food, each dish was absolutely delicious. We started off with their rosemary and sea salted butter, and this is now our benchmark for the best bread we’ve ever received at a restaurant. The bread was fresh as could be, and with the amazing butter it was just the perfect combination.
I got the filet mignon with the truffle butter and their house steak sauce, and both were absolutely incredible additions. The steak itself was awesome, but the truffle flavor had great flavor and was worth the cost to add it. The steak sauce was also mind blowing, and seeing as how I was very unsure what to add for a sauce I really got lucky there. I couldn’t order it with anything else going forward, it was that good.
My wife got the brie entree with phyllo do which she really enjoyed, and I had a chance to try it and thought it was very flavorful.
As sides we got the truffle fries and the lobster mac – the truffle fries came out without truffle, but our server quickly corrected this and maybe they overcompensated, but it was COVERED in truffle sauce. Since truffle fries may be my wife and I’s favorite thing in the world, we were in absolute heaven. The mac and cheese itself was out of this world, but the lobster I could have taken or left. I wish they just had a side dish of mac and cheese, because I’d probably order three and have that as my entree.
Lastly for dinner we got the donut holes from Frontier Tavern (it’s not on the 1796 menu, you have to ask) and at first they came out very burned but again, our server was on top of it and she had them replaced after. The caramel sauce with the donut holes was a perfect combination, and we ended up coming to the bar just to get another order the next night. The chocolate sauce was just OK, tasting a bit like Bosco/Hersheys chocolate syrup rather than a melted chocolate.
Overall there were at least a few situations that needed correcting, but they did such a fantastic job at correcting them (mostly without needing to be asked) and the food itself was just so darn good that I have to give them 5 stars. We will definitely be back, and this restaurant will be on the top of our list!
We started with the shrimp cocktail and their cranberry bread, it was still warm and the flavors were perfect. For entrees I got the crab crakes, they tasted so fresh like they came from the ocean same day. My husband got the wagyu steak with onions and he said it was cooked to absolute perfection. We also shared the lobster mac n cheese, and WOW the chunks of lobster were huge! They also sent us home with a chocolate cupcake since we were celebrating, such a nice touch. Our server was very kind and presented the menu to us so we’d know exactly what was being offered.
My only complaint is the lack of options for appetizers. I would’ve loved some stuffed mushrooms or cheese dip.
