Just so you can have an idea, we travel a lot, all over the US and other countries… this restaurant will ALWAYS be remembered for both of us, and we will definitely go back to this cute country town, and I will eat at the 1635 On the Avenue every single night! Prices were so good too, nothing like what we are used to. AMAZING AMAZING… you guys should be very proud of the beautiful work you do there. Beautiful and tasteful decoration. LOVE THE PLACE, no other words to describe it.
This past Saturday night we had a group of 6 & were seated at a too-small round table even though we had phoned for reservations mid-week. They had the opportunity to have seated us at a straight row of 6 seats had they planned just a little better and not had us seated on top of one another in a tight corner. There was a straight row of 4 available all night… Then we were placed under a fan that was running on high and all of us in our party were very cold. Immediately. We asked our waitress to please turn it off. She said to forget about it that we were the 2nd table that night to ask & the owner will refuse. When the owner did greet our table we asked her to turn the fan off & she said that it’s all tied into the kitchen and if we were back there with the cooks we’d know why the fans were turned on. All of us piped up & stated that we weren’t in the kitchen though but she shrugged & walked off. Our waitress & wait staff served the whole meal from standing at one point at this little round table rather than walking behind each individual and serving over the shoulder. They did this because the table was so small and we were crammed in a corner of the restaurant and they didn’t have the space to walk around the table easily. As such – they expected us to pass each item around the table to each other. The same with clearing the table after each course. Unfortunately – this also meant that silverware full of butter from a plate of mussels ended up in my husbands lap on off white pants… And if we sent all the silverware to them while clearing the table, they would send silverware back – thus indicating that we were to use the same silverware throughout the meal rather than be given clean silverware with each course. And since we were doing a “round robin” of handing these items to the wait staff, we handled these items repeatedly. Not hygienic at all. When we were given the checks by our waitress, she informed that she had forgone adding the 20% gratuity fee for large groups because she was confident that “we would take care of her”. We were all quite taken aback by this statement since we hadn’t had a great time. And finally, as we were waiting for the checks to come back to the table and everyone to finalize their evening with one another one of the young wait staff started to clear the table and was expecting us to hand her everything as we were all talking to one another, trying to have a relaxing end of evening. I finally just looked at her and told her to let us just finish and clear the table after we had left. It was a fiasco. Yes – the owner had visited the table several times during the evening and asked if everything was alright. The food was fine. But it was clear from moment one when we asked to turn off the fan because our whole table was cold and we were told that the kitchen was more important than the customer was – that we were not going to be heard nor cared for. Their service was quick but inappropriate by servicing the whole table from one spot by handing off to one customer and expecting us to hand it on to one another. That isn’t professional hospitality service. And finally – the boldness of our waitress to voice the fact that she expected a 20+ gratuity just floored all of us after a dismal evening. We always hope for local businesses to thrive since we live in the community – but they have failed us twice and there will not be a third opportunity.
Appetizers- ordered the escargot and crab cake . The escargot was overcooked, and rubbery. They were flavorful, but unpleasant due to the texture (I had properly cooked escargot later in the evening at a different restaurant). The crab cake was cooked well, and held together. It was almost as much mustard as crab, and the largest piece of crab was about as big as a mustard seed. With the abundance of blue crabs in the lowcountry, there is no reason it shouldn’t be lump backfin meat.
Salad- mixed greens, and a decent size. We had different dressings, so I got to try the poppyseed, and the balsamic vinaigrette. All of their dressings are made in house, and they have a buttermilk ranch, and one other option. Both dressings I tried lacked balance. The vinaigrette was overly acidic, and the poppyseed dressing was overly sweet.
Entrees- I ordered the ribeye, which was described as a 12oz cut with caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms. I requested it prepared medium rare. To my surprise, I received my steak, covered in Montreal steak seasoning, or an equivalent, brown gravy, with a few slivers of onion, and 2 slices of mushroom. It was medium well in most spots, and well done in the others. I had a total of one bite before deciding to go somewhere else. My wife had the Mediterranean Grouper, which sounded incredible in the description on the menu. This would have been my menu choice, but I wanted to try a variety of menu items, and knew she would give me a few bites. Unlike my steak, her fish was undercooked.
The service was friendly, and timely. The owner stopped by each table while we were there. She asked us how things were shortly after our first bites. I gave her the honest feedback above, and she offered to prepare new entrees. Her and her staff were the highlight of our visit. Despite their hospitality, I do not believe I will be visiting again.
Wait staff was friendly and pleasant and the chef was spot on with everything!!!
