I say this with only anecdotes but I feel like French restaurants have a hard time in Austin.

I’ve been excited to try this place for a while. I was a big fan of Sway’s ambiance so really wanted to see this remodeled into a French Bistro. Glad to say, I was very impressed by the remodel, particularly where they placed their bar, long butcher block counter top (my favorite). Super cute inside. The drinks were divine and the glassware was absolutely beautiful.

We were a party of 6 celebrating our friend’s birthday. Food was delicious! We got a little of everything and everyone loved what they ordered. The scrambled eggs and sausage tho

So why three stars instead of five? Service was very confusing, to sum it up. Lost track of how many people came to our table to bring us food/drinks. Our main waitress was aloof and not very pleasant . She never introduced herself, forgot to bring us a few things and made some snarky comments. It didn’t seem busy and we were spending good money, so I guess we maybe expected more on the service front. But based on other reviews, we may have just experienced an anomaly so we’d be down to try it again.

Without the service snafu, 5 stars all the way!

The atmosphere was Austin vibes. Went on a Monday night during happy hour and half priced steak frites. Space is small and quaint. The waiter gave good recommendations and someone was always around to clear the table or refill your glass. Items we ordered
Escargot- 1st time trying not bad. The patisserie was buttery and added to the texture
French onion soup – delicious
Steak Frites – only two options, medium rare and well done. I ordered well done . I didn’t care for the steak and fries. Steak was average and fries were disappointing. The fries were over cooked and unseasoned.
Margarita – it was good with a smoky taste.
Glad we tried it, but won’t be added to my list of returning restaurants.

Again, just my opinion .

Cute and cozy! I only tried the brunch but I was wowed, so dinner/lunch experiences should be even better! The Benedict was amazing, the savory quiche was phenomenal and the one that stands out and really was the wow factor – was the chocolate croissant! We sat on the patio and they have heaters, so it was really not a big deal (with the chilly weather). Service was quick and we enjoyed our time. We had reservations, and I would recommend that as it was almost full and the parking lot was full too. My recommendation is to add specialty coffees as I wanted to have a cappuccino with my croissant but they only had drip coffee. Really good place!

I have had my eye on this bistro for a while. The ambiance was very nice I loved the decor. In pictures it looks really dark but in person it’s quit nice. I noticed attention to detail in the small things. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic the blue cheese beignets is what caught my eye. They were delicious not over powering at all. Everything we had was delicious. We want to go back and try more things on the menu.

Excellent brunch offerings, fresh pastries, creatively crafted cocktails – 1417 does all the things right! We had a fantastic Mother’s Day brunch here the other weekend. The decor is smart and tasteful. The outdoor patio is a great option for earlier in the day. Plenty of shade to go with a refreshing cocktail. A real standout- the fresh pastries were buttery and expertly made. An excellent addition to the Austin restaurant scene. Definitely worth checking out.

Left wanting. While the cocktails were interesting most of the food fell flat. The high price for every item doesn’t feel justified once you dive into your dish. We selected from the A la carte menu vs the $95 tasting menu at dinner. The mussels were probably the best dish out of all of them, cooked to perfection with a curry sauce that was perfectly spicy. Steak felt mediocre, the crab was flavorful but small l, and the baked/flaming cheese dish was ok but empty- although a cool spectacle. The snapper ceviche was okay, mostly stacked with garnishes then there was actual fish- and I was looking forward to it. I’m all for small tapas style dishes but these felt empty, always something missing. The ideas felt good but the execution wasn’t there. The second best dish was a dessert, the Feta cheese cake with watermelon sorbet, something different and executed well, though most of my party wasn’t a fan I thought it was yummy. The bev menu has variety but it’s pricey. They do have half priced bottles of wine on Wednesday but there will be a select few available for that special. I suppose what was missing was a story, a journey, the menu felt all over the place. There were so many choices but there wasn’t one thing to tie it all together. Overall service was wonderful and I didn’t hate the food, I just didn’t truly love any of it enough to go back or recommend it. it’s there, it’s an option but there are other places to have a high end dinning experience, where you feel satiated and happy.

Honestly, it is more of 2.5/5 stars. The drinks were great, most of the food fell short.

We sat at the bar next to a lady who had 3-4 extra drinks than she should’ve, while that is her choice, she was loud & obnoxious, most of the staff was standing around listening to her. To top it all, she was a smoker, and the cigarettes smell on her was disgusting. This is by no means the restaurant fault but it heavily impacted the atmosphere & experience.

Extra dirty martini: very good
Tiki melon: excellent, not too sweet
Side car: really good, it doesn’t taste too liquory
Au revoir: very good, taste like chocolate

Steak tartare: it was just ok, it needed salt and more flavor
Bone marrow: it was ok, nothing special. The bread edges were very dry.
Escargot: it was good, but mostly tasted buttery
Duck confit: it was the highlight of the meal, but I don’t think a duck leg worth $47
Moules frites: very good
Mousse au chocolate: delicious, not too sweet

Keep in mind this place changed owners at least once since they opened. This was my 5th visit (the first with the new owner), I enjoyed it more under the previous owner and/or chef.

1417 French Bistro was excellent. Attended an event and the place really stepped it up and created a warm, inviting and delicious experience. The place was nice, clean and charming. The layout was great and there were so many nice furnishings. The food was delicious too. The blue cheese beignets were so tasty. One of the highlights was the French onion soup. Incredible. The main course of steak frites was also amazing. Everything tasted so good and we topped it off with a crème brûlée for dessert. The service was really good and I walked out knowing I’d return and tell others how cute the place was and how great the food tasted.

What a great Happy Hour…we tried so much but have to come back on Monday (steak frites special) and Wednesday (oyster special) and just for a normal dinner too. The Fench Onion soup and frites were alright, but the steak tartare was phenomenal, as was the salade verte, oysters, and every cocktail sampled. The deviled eggs were a little salty–but not because of the oefus caviar which we did enjoy–the blue cheese beignets were surprisingly good too. The atmospere outside was beautiful, and walking inside I really liked its vibe too. Our server was awesome and very patient. There is a descent selection of wines, too. We’ll be back–I suspect every month for a little while. 5 stars.

I got the tasting menu which came with 5 courses. Each course was well portioned and timed perfectly. I’m allergic to their pumpkin dessert so they gave me a cheesecake. Service was great and so was the environment. I’m out here on vacation and will recommend this restaurant to anyone that asks me where to go in Austin.
