Wow what a gem! I had no idea this place existed up until this past week. The cocktails alone are worth the visit, far better than most places in New Haven. I had the Persimmon Spice and the French 86, and both would shine in any high end cocktail bar in NYC. Perfectly balanced and very smooth, fun twists on some old classics. The food was also surprisingly tasty! I got the calamari and the truffle fries, which might have been the best bar fries I’ve had in the recent past. Perfectly crispy and seasoned with Parmesan and parsley. The vibes were also immaculate, including the music, ambiance, lighting, and seating. On top of that, the bartender Caroline was extremely knowledgeable and answered all of my questions about how the drinks were made. I will definitely be coming back very soon!

Incredible atmosphere, stellar jazz nights in Saturday. Incredible food by hachiroku. The best combination. The lighting, the bar the whole vibe is great. Such good times. Some of the best quality food.

Such a great atmosphere and better cocktails. Bambi was so nice and knowledgeable. Only had time for the one cocktail, but we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in CT.

This place is an amazing Japanese influenced cocktail bar and restaurant in the downtown area. The space is beautiful and sets an incredible vibe, especially as the sun goes down with the beautiful glow from the translucent stone bar.

The front space of the restaurant is primarily occupied by the aforementioned bar with a small number of bar tables, a pair of which are uniquely built into the wall across from the bar creating a more secluded feel for those seated there, nice for creating a little oasis escape. Walking past the front tables and bar seating the space has a few steps up that take you to the remaining dining tables. The slight increase in elevation combined with good design choice create a pleasant separation from the bar without losing the beauty and warmth that casts into the space through the translucent stone. For spring, summer, and warm fall evenings there is an outdoor space just beyond the main dining area that makes for a great space for dinner and drinks with friends without sacrificing the few amazing outdoor days we get in New England.

The real complement to all of this though, is the food and drink. Reading over the menu makes it clear that the staff have put incredible thought into how to craft upscale food and cocktail options with Japanese ingredients and feel without falling victim to overplayed tropes. If you’ve had the opportunity to visit one of the other Hachiroku businesses you’ll see the same level of thought and care put into the menu here. Some of my personal favorites from the food menu: truffle fries, calamari & mushrooms, Wagyu beef salad, manilla clam sakamushi, teriyaki burger, and anything they have on a skewer.

The drinks share the same love and attention as the food in their creation and execution. I’ve tried many amongst friends and they’ve all been incredible. I have a soft spot for the Ripe Chuhai but the Persimmon Spice and Fresh Start compete for my favorite. The Sakura colada is a sweet treat that I can’t help but order. The glassware for the drinks is stunning and adds such an elevated feel to an already upscale establishment. I enjoy when new drinks are added to the menu because it often means new unique glassware as well.

I’ve already stretched this review beyond my intent, but I also want to mention that the service and staff are great as well. Everyone I’ve interacted with has been friendly and helpful in explaining menu items and offering suggestions when I’m undecided or looking to pair my food and drink nicely.

If you’re into great cocktails, food, or ambiance it’s worth a visit if you’re in town.

Great new addition for cocktails downtown! Unique drinks all using Sake, and great BBQ meat dishes when available. More on the pricey side but worth the quality. Fairly quiet noise and not super busy.

This place is amazing. Delicious and creative dishes melding Japanese cuisine with other flavors. The truffle fries, lamb momos/dumplings, wagyu beef toast, and fried chicken were amazing. Those truffle fries put all other fries to shame. This restaurant is on the pricier side, so save it for a special occasion!

Hachiroku took over 116 Crown and kept the iconic bar. Many great cocktails, some of our favorites are Ripe Chuhai, Persimmon spice, and Fresh Start. Food quality is great just like all the other Hachiroku locations, yet still different enough that I would want to go to 116 for their specific dishes. The ones that stood out for me were the teriyaki burger and the truffle fries. I’ve had it twice already and I think about it at least once a week. Other dishes I enjoyed were the calamari/mushrooms and the steak salad. Great place for dinner, date night or late night drinks and snacks.

The loveliest place. Foods absolutely delicious. Honestly, flavors I haven’t encountered in any other meals. The cocktails are also very creative.

Drinks are built extremely well.
The staff was friendly and attentive.
Food was excellent.
The price wasn’t asking for too much considering the quality.
We went early around 5-6pm and it was very quite. The only problem with the place that I saw was the bathroom toilet was missing a flush button and the place wasn’t really given its own flair as far as decor from the old 116.

Had the cabbage, edamame, arugala salad, zucchini, corn, scallop and short rib – the latter 4 were grilled on binchotan charcoal which added a lovely smokiness/char. The short rib was great, salad was good and everything else was unremarkable. Cheesecake and panna cotta for dessert which were fine. Cocktails were fun and interesting. Service was good. Atmosphere is lacking, it’s just the empty husk of 116 Crown. Glad to have tried it, but moving forward will always choose the original spot, Hachiroku Shokudo & Sake Bar, which is always incredible.
