A bit hesitant to write a 5 star review for this restaurant because I’m convinced that lower score here is deliberate to keep this gem a secret. We went for a Sunday dinner and the place was pack – almost all the clients were Chinese. Very authentic and excellent Chinese (Shanghainese)food – no orange chicken here.

Shanghailander Palace is a true gem for those seeking authentic Shanghai-style cuisine, and honestly, I’m surprised this restaurant holds a low star rating. While the service leaves room for improvement, the quality and authenticity of the food far outweigh any shortcomings, making it well worth a visit.

Ambiance: 4/5
The dining area is simple yet comfortable, with a traditional feel that suits the style of cuisine. It’s not overly flashy, but it creates the right atmosphere for enjoying a hearty, family-style Chinese meal.

Authenticity: 5/5
If you’re from Shanghai—or familiar with its culinary traditions—you’ll immediately recognize the flavors here. The dishes are classic, nuanced, and true to the region’s cuisine. It’s rare to find a restaurant that delivers Shanghai flavors this faithfully.

Flavor: 4/5
The food is deeply satisfying, with well-balanced seasonings and a great mix of textures. From their signature Shanghainese dishes to their flavorful stir-fries, each plate reflects skill and care in preparation. This is comfort food at its finest, with a clear nod to tradition.

Service: 3/5
The service is average at best and could use improvement, especially given the price point. While staff are polite, there’s a noticeable lack of attentiveness, and the pacing of dishes can be uneven.

Cost: 4/5
While prices lean on the higher side, the authenticity and taste make it a worthwhile splurge. If you’re craving genuine Shanghainese flavors, this is the place to indulge.

Final verdict: Shanghailander Palace may not deliver a five-star dining experience in terms of service, but when it comes to true Shanghai flavors, it’s hard to beat. For those who value culinary authenticity over polish, this spot deserves a solid 4 stars.

I have been there several times over the years and really like the Shanghailander Palace. If you like traditional Shanghainese food I would highly recommend it. There are plenty of Shanghai cold dishes and main dishes to choose from to fit your tastes. Can be a little pricy depending on your orders. A nice clean restaurant and the waiter’s services are very warm and helpful. Takeout is pretty convenient as well.

Five stars for the amazing time I had with my Ad Gals. The service was great, quicker and friendlier than most places nearby ⭐️

My favorite dishes were the jellyfish and the eel the marinade raw crab and the lightly fried fish filet are also good.

Not sure what the sign at front is about but better safe than sorry ‍♀️ photos for your reference below.

11/2/2024 – Had a banquet menu lunchoen at an elegant private room. Overall, each dish is delicious while the Pan-fried buns (生煎包) is average (2 or 3 stars) because the meats and taste is not good, or lacks umami (缺乏鲜味), although the appearance is very good.

This is either #1 Shanghai restaurant or one of the top 2 in the County of Los Angeles with an authentic Chinese Cuisine. On the other hand, exchanging a plate only took place once during a 12-course banquet period, which is below an upscale dining restaurant standard.

Five of us dined together and ordered a total of ten dishes—three appetizers and seven mains. The dishes were all quite authentic, showcasing solid technique and balanced flavors.

Appetizers included pickled radish, jellyfish with vinegar, and drunken chicken. The jellyfish stood out with its refreshing crunch and well-balanced acidity. The drunken chicken had a nicely layered wine marinade—aromatic but not overpowering.

On to the main courses: cauliflower with smoked bacon in casserole, stir-fried fresh abalone with ginger and scallion, meatball stuffed with salted egg yolk, vermicelli in casserole, and glutinous shao mai, among others. The vermicelli casserole had excellent wok hei (wok fragrance), giving it that deep, smoky flavor we love. The meatball with salted egg yolk was rich and savory, and the abalone was tender with clean, bright seasoning.

Every dish was well-prepared, and the overall meal felt comforting.

Our experience here was a bit out of the ordinary and perhaps elevated above what a typical diner would enjoy, as it was a private party in a separate room, with a pre-set banquet menu. Presentation and plating were top notch and fitting of a fine dining establishment. It felt like classic Chinese cuisine reinterpreted with a more modern aesthetic. I wasn’t blown away by the flavors, and perhaps that was simply because the dishes were not ones we would typically order and were catered towards the palate of a more senior generation.

My favorite dishes were the poached chicken, Beijing duck, vegetable rice, and lobster. I typically love whole steamed fish but I found this particular variety to have far too many tiny needle like bones which were hard to pick out and avoid chewing.

I left this restaurant feeling incredibly frustrated and unwelcome. The experience started poorly with a greeting from the waiters that was completely devoid of any warmth or smile—it felt like we were an inconvenience from the moment we walked in.

The worst part, however, was the seating situation. Our group consisted of 4 people, and we could clearly see at least 4 or 5 empty tables that would have been perfect for us. When we asked if we could sit at one of them, we were told they were being ‘reserved’ for future guests who weren’t even in the building yet. Instead, they planed to squeeze us into a tiny table right by the front door. It is expected we would constantly jostled by the heavy traffic of people coming and going. It’s incredibly off-putting to be treated as a second-class customer while they hold empty space for hypothetical diners. Based on this poor service and lack of common courtesy, I won’t be visiting this restaurant again for quite a while.

I would give this restaurant a five star if it were for the awful long time it took to get our food. It took almost an hour for us to get two dishes this evening after waiting to be seated for 40 min, it was absolutely crazy! Fortunately, the wait staff were all friendly and the manager brought us a complimentary bowl of Shanghai sticky rice balls, which was nice. All five dishes we ordered were authentic in taste and execution, so no complaints there. If the restaurant can get its kitchen staff to work out the logistics, it will be great. Food is pricey compared to other comparable Shanghai restaurants, but good.

The pork trotter was dry! The whole point of that dish is the softness. The pork was either frozen or overcooked. $30+ dish. What a disappointment. Also the wok fried noodle had 2 tiny pieces of pork in the whole dish, we almost didnt know it was there ! Only thing that was good was the shen zien bao but if they were real shanghainese style it would have soup in them (no not xia long bao). Never again.
