Shanghailander Palace, 1440 S Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007, US
Reviews
Ambiance: 4/5
The dining area is simple yet comfortable, with a traditional feel that suits the style of cuisine. It’s not overly flashy, but it creates the right atmosphere for enjoying a hearty, family-style Chinese meal.
Authenticity: 5/5
If you’re from Shanghai—or familiar with its culinary traditions—you’ll immediately recognize the flavors here. The dishes are classic, nuanced, and true to the region’s cuisine. It’s rare to find a restaurant that delivers Shanghai flavors this faithfully.
Flavor: 4/5
The food is deeply satisfying, with well-balanced seasonings and a great mix of textures. From their signature Shanghainese dishes to their flavorful stir-fries, each plate reflects skill and care in preparation. This is comfort food at its finest, with a clear nod to tradition.
Service: 3/5
The service is average at best and could use improvement, especially given the price point. While staff are polite, there’s a noticeable lack of attentiveness, and the pacing of dishes can be uneven.
Cost: 4/5
While prices lean on the higher side, the authenticity and taste make it a worthwhile splurge. If you’re craving genuine Shanghainese flavors, this is the place to indulge.
Final verdict: Shanghailander Palace may not deliver a five-star dining experience in terms of service, but when it comes to true Shanghai flavors, it’s hard to beat. For those who value culinary authenticity over polish, this spot deserves a solid 4 stars.
My favorite dishes were the jellyfish and the eel the marinade raw crab and the lightly fried fish filet are also good.
Not sure what the sign at front is about but better safe than sorry ♀️ photos for your reference below.
This is either #1 Shanghai restaurant or one of the top 2 in the County of Los Angeles with an authentic Chinese Cuisine. On the other hand, exchanging a plate only took place once during a 12-course banquet period, which is below an upscale dining restaurant standard.
Appetizers included pickled radish, jellyfish with vinegar, and drunken chicken. The jellyfish stood out with its refreshing crunch and well-balanced acidity. The drunken chicken had a nicely layered wine marinade—aromatic but not overpowering.
On to the main courses: cauliflower with smoked bacon in casserole, stir-fried fresh abalone with ginger and scallion, meatball stuffed with salted egg yolk, vermicelli in casserole, and glutinous shao mai, among others. The vermicelli casserole had excellent wok hei (wok fragrance), giving it that deep, smoky flavor we love. The meatball with salted egg yolk was rich and savory, and the abalone was tender with clean, bright seasoning.
Every dish was well-prepared, and the overall meal felt comforting.
My favorite dishes were the poached chicken, Beijing duck, vegetable rice, and lobster. I typically love whole steamed fish but I found this particular variety to have far too many tiny needle like bones which were hard to pick out and avoid chewing.
The worst part, however, was the seating situation. Our group consisted of 4 people, and we could clearly see at least 4 or 5 empty tables that would have been perfect for us. When we asked if we could sit at one of them, we were told they were being ‘reserved’ for future guests who weren’t even in the building yet. Instead, they planed to squeeze us into a tiny table right by the front door. It is expected we would constantly jostled by the heavy traffic of people coming and going. It’s incredibly off-putting to be treated as a second-class customer while they hold empty space for hypothetical diners. Based on this poor service and lack of common courtesy, I won’t be visiting this restaurant again for quite a while.
