I’m not sure how else to describe this, but “gentrified banh mi” is what comes to mind. I got the Saigon and it was dry. Maybe not enough pâté? The carrots and daikon weren’t pickled at all or not enough, so that didn’t help. Flavors weren’t hitting either. My daughter got the steak banh mi but it was just a bunch of fatty pieces in the sandwich, so she didn’t enjoy it. Don’t get me wrong, the food is edible- we ate it! But that could be because of sunk cost fallacy.

I decided to take a detour and try a new bahn mi place and not my usual spot.
Nice little spot with a couple tables for outdoor seating. When I got there around 3, some of the items on the menu were crossed off, but I’m there for bahn mi and they had what I wanted.
I order a grilled steak and xa xiu(pork). I took it home to eat as I live a bit far.
First look at the bahn mi, it is different from other bahn mi. The cucumber is a thin slice flat cucumber, green onion and cilantro were mince which I liked and there were no jalapeño, instead there is pickled pepper. I think I also tasted mint in one of my bahn mi.
As far as taste, the daikon and carrot didn’t really have a pickle taste to it. Both meat were flavorful and I liked it. I didn’t taste any pâté, maybe the juice from the meat on both bahn mi seems have soaked onto the bread and overpower the pâté especially the grilled steak.
Overall bahn mi is good, it is different from the others and worth a try, but it is a bit pricy at 14.

D’s has so much potential, but it unfortunately fell slightly short of my high expectations. After driving by this spot almost every day for the past couple of years, I was so excited to see that it had finally opened. My husband and I decided to try it out this evening, and we were bursting with excitement.

So many elements are there— cute neighborhood storefront with an adorable patio, friendly and relatively quick service, delightful curry sauce, peanut sauce that packs a punch, tofu pressed to perfection, expertly rolled spring rolls, and yummy mock duck.

However, some things just weren’t up to par. The tofu was undersalted. The bread was tough and kind of dry. The banh mi didn’t have great structural integrity and started falling apart midway through the sandwich. The veggies needed to be pickled. The Thai tea came in a can and wasn’t very cold.

Overall, it was a net positive experience, but when you’re comparing it to the gold standard of Lu’s, it’s just hard to compare. We know they’re just getting started, so we’ll try D’s again in a few months to see if they’ve worked out some of the quirks. We’re rooting with you, D’s.

The sandwiches are great. By the time I got to order, the BBQ pork and lemongrass chicken had sold out. I opted to get their cold cut sandwich, the Saigon, which turned out to still be delicious. They have a ton of vegetarian options as well, tofu and mock duck. For a $14 sandwich, I would’ve hoped it’d be a little bigger, but the flavor and quality is there. After selling out their first two days open, I’m hoping they find the success to maintain this place; I desperately want a new lunch spot.

Food is still excellent! Wait times have improved dramatically!

If you visited during the opening week(s) you may have experienced 30+ minutes wait times during peak hours (like I did). But I just visited on Wednesday (9/17) at 1:30 PM and got a pork banh mi, a steak banh mi, and an order of spring rolls and it was ready to go in five minutes!

The sandwiches are great. The noodle bowls are great. The spring rolls are a nice little app, too.

Really, really tasty food! I came back tonight for the totally awesome Vietnamese beef stew (2nd time) . It is so delicious and generous. A bit hot (spicy), which I like, and so flavorful. I add rice to the leftovers for a 2nd meal, still with plenty of flavor. My wife and my best friend loved the lemongrass chicken and beef Bahn mi sandwiches I’m glad they are in our neighborhood.

Just ate the BBQ pork bahn mi and it was great. Yes, the price is more than you would pay in Saigon but you are getting an authentic Vietnamese dish in the middle of Snowhere MN so enjoy it. The D’s are into the details from the elegant planter boxes to the logo sandwich sleeves. I will return soon and I don’t say the often!

Really glad this place finally opened, and also happy that they are not dumbing down a classic Vietnamese food. A couple minor suggestions to the owners: the sandwich could use some moisture, which usually comes from maggi sauce. I poured some sauce from my daughter’s noodle bowl on it, but that wasn’t ideal. Offer sriracha; I don’t use it on everything but it is highly complimentary to banh mis. Also, go heavier on the pate. That flavor needs to compete more with the others. Overall, I was really happy with all 3 banh mis I tried. The grilled steak narrowly won for my favorite.
