This is the absolute best Chinese food we have ever had. I am not exaggerating. We have lived in Chicago, San Diego, Hawaii, and have traveled the world. This is what we compare all other Chinese food to. Mapo tofu is outstanding, made with Szechwan peppercorns. Sesame chicken is fantastic, crunchy, saucy, not too tangy or sweet. We will come back to Lawrence just for this place.

The interior and service has improved quite a bit!
The owner is putting in work to make the dine in experience enjoyable. Their sweet and sour fish is actually really good, as well as the cumin beef. The cold noodles appetizer is always great.

Update:
This is THE spot to get authentic Sichaun Chinese food. Owners are from Sichuan province and cook all the authentic dishes fresh to order themselves. The kitchen is OPEN FORMAT Kitchen, front and center— so there is nothing to hide, unlike many Chinese restaurants.
Awesome family restaurant! They have invested so much time, effort and resources into this location and the product really shows it:

Tips:
if you are willing to try spicy/not just sweet Chinese food, try the authentic menu dishes. The sichuan style beef has a delicious cumin/onion flavor

Try the Yu-Xiang eggplant for a not-so common menu item that is delicious.

The country style beef/chicken can be pretty spicy, but is also delicious

Update: Because of the precooked and sometimes too dry or too sweet items in the dishes I’m reducing my original 4 stars to three.

We tried Red Pepper now that they have moved into their new location on 9th street. The new place was renovated and it was done well. The layout of the kitchen and dining area is clean and serves the space well. There is a large dining area in the back for large parties or spill over when the front dining area reaches capacity. The outside seating was nice and clean.

There are two side to the menu. One is the westernized Chinese menu and the back side is authentic Chinese dishes. I’ll say this once….do yourself a favor and order the authentic Chinese menu items. You got one life to live and orange chicken shouldn’t be in your vocabulary.

Spread your culinary wings and try some excitement in your meals. I settled in for my favorite the authentic stir fried pork intestines with vegetables. This dish is loaded with green and red peppers, onions, red chili peppers, Sichuan peppers that numb just the tip of your tongue, ginger, scallions, garlic, chili oil, shaoxing wine, and pork intestines that are flash cooked to be crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It comes with a side of rice and I guarantee you’ll like it

We also ordered the dinner combo authentic Chinese dish of stir fried beef with vegetables. Basically the same ingredients but it has beef instead of pork intestines. The combo meal comes with a choice of egg roll, egg drop soup, and rice.

Prices were very reasonable and the portions were large.

The order to plate time was great considering how much take out they were also preparing. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable about items on the menu.

Our food was great and the combination of the peppers, herbs, and vegetables really met my expectations of some good home style Chinese food. The soup was great as was the egg roll.

2nd visit
I went again and ordered the Kung Poa Chicken and it was way too sweet. No vegetables like a traditional dish. This level of sweetness is because the meat is exposed to the sugars too long before and after cooking. I’m positive all the meats are precooked, which results in the sugars fully penetrating the meats.

The only thing I could find to improve on would be cooking the meat items when ordered versus pre-cooking them. The pork intestines and beef had obviously been cooked far ahead. That’s a shame since everything about this Chinese restaurant was right on for being a really great addition to the Lawrence food scene minus the pre cooked meats. That said, it won’t keep me from coming back. If the management could address this it would definitely increase your returning customer count.

It’s still decent, and I’ll definitely go back again and again, but please start cooking the meats to order. You’re not saving time, you’re losing customers who would be coming back. If your kitchen can’t take the time to cook to order, add another cook.

Have eaten here twice in the last week. Some of the most flavorful Chinese food I’ve ever had. The hot and sour soup is thick and full bodied. Sweet and sour chicken is tender with crunchy breading, “Done perfectly” says my girlfriend.
Staff are incredibly helpful. I love the atmosphere as the cooking takes place just behind the open counter.
Highly recommend!!

It was okay and I have honestly been to a few places in town but they need to work on their noodles. Wonton cream cheese was good but the sampler not so much. The sesame chicken was a bit soggy after we got home.

Every time we came down to Lawrence, I said every time, we have to stop by red pepper and get some spicy food. This is one of our favorite restaurants. The authentic menu is just so good, you can’t get wrong for any dishes. We really love a few specific one but trying to try all of them. So far every single dish tastes delicious! I hope they have it open forever.

I went there before Covid when the restaurant was on Iowa street. Once they moved to a new place, I tried once but the food was disappointed at that time. I tried it again recently. They completely recovered or got even better in food quality than before Covid!! Great service quality. I am happy to see the inside of the restaurant is connected to balcony. If Spring comes, I want to eat outside. This place became my almost every week place to go 🙂

Great selection of books new and used if they don’t have what you want they can order it online and have it delivered either there or to your house. Many many rows of books plenty of places to curl up and read. Nice quiet atmosphere.

I recommend, in the the authentic chicken dishes section, the Chongqing Spicy Chicken AND the Chicken with Mushrooms. Also, the Crab Rangoon is a favorite. Super easy to order online and pick up. Friendly staff too, like Dan-Dan. We love Red Pepper!
