I understand holidays are busy, but hospitality shouldn’t disappear just because a restaurant is full. We had dietary restrictions in our group (vegetarian and dairy-free), and instead of being met with understanding or flexibility, we were made to feel like an inconvenience for asking basic questions about the menu. There was little effort to accommodate us, and the overall tone felt dismissive.
Adding to that feeling, the very first thing we saw when entering was a sandwich board stating that a 20% gratuity would be added to every check. While automatic gratuities are sometimes standard, seeing that posted so prominently before even being greeted set an impersonal tone for the evening — especially when the service that followed did not feel warm or attentive.
When we expressed that we were uncomfortable with our waiter and were considering leaving, the owner, Frank, responded that it was “probably best.” That comment made it clear that our business wasn’t valued. Perhaps they assumed we were just visitors passing through, but we actually live here on St. Croix and regularly support local restaurants. We expect to be treated with the same courtesy and professionalism as anyone else.
If you’re looking for a cookie-cutter restaurant with a rigid menu and little flexibility, this may suit you. But if you’re seeking a true culinary experience — one where a trained chef appreciates the opportunity to rise to a culinary challenge and express creativity through thoughtfully prepared entrées, rather than simply executing dishes like a line cook following a fixed script — you may want to explore other options.
St. Croix has many outstanding dining establishments, including Ama at Cane Bay, The Grotto 1756, Too Chez Wine Bar & Bistro, Savant, The Goat, and Bombay Club, where hospitality and creativity truly shine.
Unfortunately, Duggan’s did not deliver that experience for us.
The restaurant has a great ocean front location, but you can’t really enjoy it when seated. Great potential that apparently hasn’t been realized.
Service is smart and prompt. The bar is very thin. Not many offerings of better liquor. I expect more with the prices and the reputation online.
All open air. No A/C. Oddly decorated like a Sports Bar w NCAA pennants all over. Kind of clashes with the upscale vibe the menue tries to communicate.
