Next we enjoyed our entrees, the steak medallions and the pork chop. The sommelier recommended us each a glass of wine for our meals which we were able to taste first. The wine selections did not disappoint and the dishes were SUPERB!
Finally, we enjoyed the Basque Cake for dessert along with the Tawny Port, DELICIOUS!!
During our meal we had the pleasure of chatting with Julie, one of the owners, and she was lovely and sweet and made us feel even MORE welcome with her beautiful energy. This restaurant is an absolute triumph, our hats off to the owners for creating such a marvelous restaurant with incredible staff, and for a wonderful experience that we won’t soon forget. We look forward to dining at Grace & Rose the next time we visit the area!
The menu was simple, yet had several choices that all sounded great. We started with the stuffed dates which were AMAZING and then had a super yummy kale salad. We following it up with the Etto pasta dish and finished with the cake dessert. Every dish was super flavorful and nice portions. Their wine list was extensive and they even had a HUGE wine bottle celler menu with a ton of wine favorites and rarities.
Needless to say, anytime we come back to Paso, we will coming back to Grace and Rose! Highly recommend it….but make a reservation, because the word is getting out and people are rushing to eat there!
Situated in a lovely retro-ranch style building that looks like it is either an original, refurbished home, or built to resemble vintage 50’s homes…
there is a little too much sparseness and lack of true comfort to really rate 4 or 5 stars.
For example, a large section of two seaters have a bench, instead of chairs. Which looks nice, but not nearly as comfortable on your backside or your rear as a classy, comfy chair found in most upscale restaurants.
The waitstaff are a bit on the young and inexperienced side. There were several moments where I needed to basically raise my hand and call out for assistance, even though there was hardly anyone left in the restaurant at the time that I dined.
At one point early on, I asked a question; waited about 10 minutes for the response, while watching my server take orders from other tables instead of answering my question.
The pasta was great, tho a little too ‘spicy’ to make it truly enjoyable.
Servings are fair, if not generous, and pricing a bit steep on many items.
(my one meal came to $95 – with no meat whatsoever, just vegetarian, and no dessert.)
What kept the experience from being excellent was a lack of consideration for the diner.
For example, no bread – unless you’re willing to spend another $10. Most classy restaurants still serve some amount of bread if you’re ordering entrées and appetizers. Even one roll would’ve been welcome, considering I’d ordered salad and pasta.
Cleary built around the Owner’s tastes, there’s many unique ingredients, and very limited selection – one salad, one soup, one dessert- either like what’s offered, or go hungry.
Note on the dessert. A bit of generosity taking into account that some don’t like basque cake would be wise. At least one other offering…??
Even the water glasses are so tiny that I had to ask for water to be refilled not twice, but 5 times. Nobody was coming around regularly- I needed to keep raising my hand for a refill. Again, with the restaurant completely empty and most of the waitstaff was gathered around the host stand chatting… so, again, it gave the experience a lack of authentic class. Well meaning, earnest, aspiring… but not enough to charge what was being charged.
At one point, my salad arrived, and then a minute later my entrée was brought out. The waiter saw I had barely eaten my salad and asked: “Are you just going slow? Or did we bring this out too soon?“. Not classy, and my pasta was sent back.
But by that time the kitchen had closed- so I’m certain all they did was basically keep my pasta heated for 20 minutes … by the time they brought it out, the toppings had melted into the pasta, and the texture was a bit caramelized.
Fairly certain that wasn’t the pasta I should’ve enjoyed for the price.
Lastly, about 3/4 of the way into my meal a woman came up and just started chatting; she didn’t look like she was wait staff, and didn’t introduce herself. I had no idea who she was, but she was offering up information about the city, and about her family.
She circled back at the end of the meal to ask how everything was- again, without introducing herself, and I’m fairly certain it might’ve been the owner, but again it was just odd that she wouldn’t have bothered to either introduce herself (by name – or by her title) … just sort of wandered up and started chatting- twice.
She might be well known to the locals, but this is a tourist town and the classy thing would’ve been to introduce oneself- so I had context as to why she was randomly sharing information with me during my meal.
All of these things considered, again- I’m sure this is one of the five-stars for the area, but not compared to restaurants with a more sophistication, generosity, and history in other parts of the world.
Thank you.
