we found our way to Dottie’s Cafe in Dubuque for the prerequisite model show breakfast on our way to Madison, WI.
We like the little diners and local joints over the big chain restaurants. More personality!
Dottie’s opened in 1990, and sadly, Dottie her ownself had taken her trip up to Heaven a few years back. One of her 11 daughters owns the place now and is the cook. Another is a server and a one of Dottie’s granddaughters works there too. Judy, (?) our server, was not family.
Dottie’s Cafe is warm, neat as a pin and smells like good food when you first walk in. Remember the places your Grampa took you to eat breakfast (Have coffee) when you were a kid? Like that! My Sweetie had a traditional breakfast, and I chose Dottie’s signature dish, “The Hillbilly Surprise”.
The Hillbilly Surprise is an English muffin, ham, 2 eggs covered in sausage gravy with a heap of hash brown taters. I was rather in a quandary about how one eats a Hillbilly Surprise. Turns out, it’s like a Reese’s. “There’s no wrong way to eat a Hillbilly Surprise.” Knife, fork, cut, scoop, scooch, repeat.
Service was fast, good coffee and the food was hot and yummy! As you can see, the price was reasonable too. We enjoyed our visit to Dottie’s Cafe. We will be back!

Great experience at Dottie’s. It was a full breakfast for under $10. The servers were very sweet and they never let my coffee get low. It’s a short walk from the downtown hotels.

This is a great place to stop for a quick and reasonable breakfast! It has a real hometown feel with counter seating and table seating. Our waitress was very kind and attentive,and our food came pretty quick even with all of the people there. It was pretty busy on a Sunday morning at 10am. There is off site parking that is free and also street parking has meters in Dubuque.

We visited dubuque from uk and went to dotties every day for early morning breakfast. We loved it, the food is exceptionally reasonable for really good portions, my partner had the corned beef hash which was amazing, the oatmeal is lovely. The staff are fantastic, they gave us such a warm welcome and it was so lovely chatting with them every morning. Thanks for looking after us on our trip
