Jason is a wonderful host, very welcoming. Madelyn was a warm, friendly and attentive waitress. So too Ava.
The place was packed. Rightly so. We started with fresh, mixed greens and homemade tasty rolls with real butter. I had dry rub ribs with marinara sauce. Hearty serving of JoJo.

Others had the special, with spaghetti , chicken and meatballs.yum yum.
Every body was full!

The menu does not reflect recent price changes. Extra sauce for take out cost more than extra chicken, extra meatball and extra sasuage. Its 4.50 for sauce to go, the chicken is most expensive extra thing at 4$ (after the sauce). It does not say that ANYWHERE on the menu nor online (i throughly checked and the server could not show me where it says that except on the machine, illegal?) that its heckin 4.50 for some sauce. I have never paid that much for extra SAUCE, im from the USA, washington. Im always charged for extra anything where i live, never this much for sauce. Crazy to me, sorry paying 4.50 for some dang sauce triggered me pretty badly.
One salad container and 1 dressing cup for 3 special orders? We WERE going to head to gyro park but went home since we need to seperate the salads and decided to just eat at home. Woulda been nice to get 3 small SEPERATE salads so we didnt need to use any dishes ya know. Just weird cuz any other place I order food at they’d give seperate salads.
I think ownership changed, im visiting someone who’s been here 30 years, grew up here ya know? Gets food here often but hadn’t for like 5? Months and suddenly there’s these changes. Also the chicken is no longer dry and overcooked like its always been i guess. Food IS good but idk, I coulda made this at home without issue but I also cook all the time. 4/5
Sure im being picky but I ive never had a experience like this. I do NOT bother staff with questions like “hey so why does your menu not say the price of extra sauce, why is it FOUR FIFTY and why is the salad and bread a seperate charge on the bill? Take out sauce is extra but eat in sauce is not? Where does it say that?” i am MEEK, I dont stand up for myself unless food is genuinely terrible and I cant eat it (and ill STILL pay at least half or get something else and pay for that) or not what i ordered. But when a check has unexpected stuff I guess I get mad enough to speak up.

The serving was huge, I ordered the dinner roll (salad, spaghetti, meatballs, chicken, potatoes and a bread). The food was great especially the meatballs were tasty, the salad and the bread were okay. Also I ordered one of the Italian soda which is so good (ordered the passionfruit flavour but was not available so I changed it to raspberry). The servers are very friendly as well.

The Colander is a community favourite, a restaurant that has stood the test of time and serves up a limited Italian menu. My partner had the spaghetti which came with a salad and homemade Italian dressing, chicken pieces, jojo potatoes and a giant freshly made roll. If was a huge serving and enough for leftovers. I ordered the dry rub ribs with potatoes and it did not disappoint. The ribs were tender and well seasoned, though they were a little dry. My potatoes were crispy on the outside, soft in the inside. Delicious! I recommend when you are in the Trail area, stop by this institution.

A true classic. I stopped in here for the first time in ages this past summer and will gladly visit again. The food quality is good and the quantities are insane. We had to wait a while to be seated, but I don’t blame the staff because it seemed like they were shorthanded. Also, there’s a seating area where you can drink beer and wine while you wait to be seated. The space is large and offers a lot of seating, but is basically windowless. I can’t wait to come back and totally pig out again.

Definately where the locals go. HUGE place with super friendly service and gigantic portions. Very tasty, great traditional Italian food. Ate, and ate and still had another whole meal I took home. Noisy and fun- there were hockey teams in enjoing dinner together. Very reasonable prices, particularly considering how large the plates were.

The best Italian food in the Kootenays, a place I’ve loved since childhood. It’s such a must-stop for me that I’ll even detour just to get there. You’ll find the sauce indescribable and the prices unbeatable.

This place is awful it took them 20 mins to come to our table when there was no one in the restaurant then the gnocchi they brought was crunchy and gave my partner 3 degree burns in her mouth btw they get there gnocchi from the $ store just so you guy’s are informed they also charge way to much for there shitty pasta and there was no music in there the plates were dirty and my chicken was pink….

Everyone in the area and visiting should experience the Colander at-least once. Local staple dining experience, just as good to take out. Fantastic spaghetti. The special is overrated, just get meatballs.
