Haven’t been to the Golden Steer in about 15 years. Still basically the same great steak house. Started with baked French Onion soup and it was delicious! Flavorful broth and lots of cheese. Big fillet cooked to perfection at medium rare and baked potato. Other order was a NY strip which was also cooked perfect. No frills place with good food. Sidenote get the cheesecake!

Hidden gem with great food and service. Old school styling which is fine when you serve quality food. Filet was perfectly cooked to order and French onion soup was delicious.

Elba’s Golden Steer offers a classic steakhouse experience with a few highs and lows. The French onion soup was delicious—rich and flavorful, though a touch on the salty side. The steaks, however, were absolutely cooked to perfection—tender, juicy, and exactly as ordered. The atmosphere leans toward the old-school side; it’s a bit dark and dated, but that seems to be part of its charm and intended ambiance. Unfortunately, the shrimp fell short, coming out overcooked with a batter that didn’t quite hit the mark. Overall, a solid dining experience, especially for steak lovers, with a few areas that could use improvement.

Great place to eat in Forest Park. Food is served with generous portions. Dinners run from 40-50 dollars. It’s comparable to eating at an old time Supper Club. Prime Rib is enormous. Small (nine stools) bar is also available if U want to come solo or enjoy a cocktail. Open for Dinner, Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday. Bar is open earlier. On Fridays and Saturdays food service stops at 10. Always get reservations on a Friday or Saturday especially during the non Summer season. Parking is available on Roosevelt or the side streets. Walked in with high expectations knowing that this place is often compared to the one and only Toms Steakhouse in Melrose Park. Wow!!! I must say that there is absolutely no comparison what so ever to Toms. The waitress rushed our meal, tried to take our bread! What do you plan on doing with our bread? Lol.
Forgot our drinks, forgot my baked potatoe.
I ordered shrimp Dejonghe which is what I always order at Toms and it was so watery, no flavor, it was soup Dejoonghe. My hubbys prime rib was good. The French onion soup was good if you can break down the chewy cheese that doesn’t seem to seperate as you chew it. It must be swallowed whole in smal bites, , creamy chicken soup was campbells but good.
Don’t bother with the blue cheese watery dressing. You’re better off with the garlic watery one. Mind you this is on Valentines Day!
My kids French fries were great!!!! The best was the waitress at the end was upset because she charged us for the baked potato that I never received and I asked her to take it off the bill. When it came time to pay the bill I tried handing her cash tip and with a nasty attitude she replied “You can leave it on the table” . Without even saying thank you!!!
They tried to steal Toms brandy ice cream but sorry Toms has them faded. As pricey as it is….. please don’t do this to yourself and your wallet.
Do yourself a favor drive 10 more minutes and go to Tom’s Steakhouse in a Melrose Park.

I have passed this restaurant for over 40 years and never went in to eat. I decided for my friend’s birthday we would give it a try. The restaurant is small, and needs to be completely updated. We sat in the bar area because the dining area was so extremely loud with people talking. The bartender was also working as the waitress and came over to take out drinks orders. We both ordered a beer. They do give you a large loaf of bread and butter which is nice but our bread wasn’t soft on the inside and would have been nice if it was warm. I ordered the French onion soup and the steer burger with Swiss cheese and no bun while my friend ordered the beef soup and ribs. We both got salads that came with the meal. The salad had very little to it one large crouton (which was delicious) one small piece of tomato, one slice of cucumber and very little lettuce. The French onion soup was delicious I loved it but for $8 thought it would come in a larger bowl. My meal came out wrong as the waitress brought me a small round piece of meat with juice. I was very confused. So I explained that I ordered a burger well done with Swiss cheese she thought I ordered the steak burger. Not sure how that piece of meat is considered a burger either and it cost $32 compared to my $13.99 burger. Anyway, they took the meat back and eventually I did get my burger. It was just okay and the fries were not good. No flavor to either item. My friend said his ribs were good but I wondered if he was just being polite because it was his birthday meal (he didn’t eat many of them). After dinner the waitress did bring a complimentary birthday slice of cheesecake which was super nice of her. The cheesecake was a good New York style cheesecake. Overall, the place is nostalgic and I am glad I finally tried it. I’m not sure if I would go back.

The vibe is definitely old steakhouse, kinda dark but the food is very good. The price for the portion is a little high in my opinion (for the burbs) so we split a plate and were hit with a $5 split fee.. so just know that you get punished for sharing. Don’t disclose your plans to split and you’ll be fine as the rules were explained afterwards to be arbitrary.
