Reviews
I strive to be very honest and quite reasonable when providing reviews. I have submitted more positive reviews than negative ones. With that in mind, please allow me to share my wife’s and my experience at Roy’s Restaurant.
Today Valentine’s Day was a rather special day, as this particular occasion occurs once a year.
Today I surprised my wife with a new restaurant, Roy’s at Bonita Springs, Located in the Promenade at Bonita Bay. This was our very first time here.
However, the lasting impression will unfortunately be defined by the unsatisfactory nature of our experience.
Our seating location was horrible, we were so close to the tables next to us, the one to the right and to our left. We unfortunately were close to the restrooms. The restroom access required patrons to navigate a narrow passage between tables, necessitating a sideways movement due to their close proximity.
My wife and I have dined at numerous five-star establishments, including The Capital Grille, Shula’s Steakhouse, Flemings, and Connors. Each of these venues provided complimentary bread service prior to the main course. However, at Roy’s Restaurant, this amenity is notably absent. Given the pricing structure, it would seem feasible to allocate resources for such a standard offering. Even Long Horn and Outback Steak house’s gives complementary bread.
Our service was subpar !
I noticed our waiter doing several jobs, bartending, then running table to table taking orders from other guests. They definitely were short staffed in this area. I had to request a water refill from another employee, who was not our designated waiter.
Now let’s discuss the food.
We decided on the crab cake appetizer. It was certainly not bad, but the crab cakes we have enjoyed in the past have featured lump crab meat. Perhaps this could be a suggestion for your Chef.
My wife’s filet mignon, was ordered well-done, but not cooked thoroughly and contained some pink.
My New York strip steak, which I had requested well-done, also not prepared to the specified doneness and necessitated a return.
Our overall experience was quite disappointing. This particular evening was intended to be a joyful celebration. I will remembering this Valentine’s Day for many years, and we will certainly not be returning.
2 out of 5 stars.
I wander it’s hard to get a table, so better to call ahead and make a reservation.
Very nice and polite service. Lady knew menu of the top of her head.
Fried fish was great , I eat all of it )) crunchy bones , head , just writhing about makes me wanna go back ))
They have a great bar area and offer an Aloha Hour. Offering their great tropical drinks and small bites. Definitely something we want to come back for.
Though it wasn’t crazy busy now, once it’s season you have to make a reservation if you want to be sure to get a table.
Our server Lisa came highly recommended and has been setting the standard in service here for over 10 years. She definitely made our meal memorable.
Roy’s special offers include Waina Wednesday for half off all bottles of wine under $100 and they will also be participating in Sizzle Dining this September 3rd-30th. Be sure to join the Ohana Club on their website to stay in the know and receive $25 off for your next visit.
They have a private dining room that seats up to 60 guests. Extremely spacious modernized bar area serving Aloha Hour menu all night!
Our waiter Roland did a fantastic job. He does such a good job describing the dishes. I think they should just get rid of the menu and let him just describe it. Perfect staff
We were a party of five with reservations for a Friday evening. After we were seated, we ordered drinks, and then waited 30 minutes before they arrived, and when they arrived, one of our party’s drink was missing. She waited another 20 minutes for her drink. We were told they were very busy at the bar and shorthanded. We ordered appetizers, and they came quickly, but that was the last thing that went right for the meal. Four times we asked for salt and pepper at the table, four times we got smiles, nods, and I’ll get it. One guest asked for bottled water three times. No water came. We ate the appetizers without seasoning, we drank without our friend participating. I asked to see the manager. He never came. After we had ordered our dinners, we waited for our food for an hour and a half. An hour in, I asked the waitress for an update and she said they were super busy. I asked to see the manager for the second time. He never came. At the hour and a half mark, I asked another staff member to get the manager. He never came. Finally I saw the manager walking by, and called him to the table.
He did everything right a manager should do. Almost. He apologized, said he was short handed due to a few last minute illnesses. He got us the water, we finally got the salt and pepper. He said he would check on the dinners and do what he could. He said he would comp us some desserts. We were mollified. Then he said the reason everything was slow was that there was an Art Show in Naples and he had two large groups, 9 and 11 people show up without reservations. I just sat there seething. I did not want to make the whole experience worse, but as a manager of a restaurant, one of your jobs is to know what external going ons may impact your dinner time load. More importantly, if you know you are short handed, you should turn away anyone who shows up without a reservation. You need to match your resources to the demand. But no, he sat those two tables because he saw dollar signs, and consequently, dozens of other diners were penalized with bad service. He won’t be seeing our dollar signs again, because that lack of management planning caused all the patrons who did make reservations, and who did arrive on time, to have a miserable dining experience.
And the food, was it worth it? Roy’s is fine dining, or as close as you can get in Bonita Springs. My partner ordered the special, which was whole Grouper, It was whole upon arrival, beautifully plated, and mostly inedible. It was completely dried out and looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time. Remember, at this point, our food had taken almost two hours to arrive. Normally, we would have called the waitress or manager over and asked if this was truly how it was supposed to be, and normally they would have said, we’ll replace it, but it was so late, and we were so fed up by now, we just pushed it aside and my partner shared food from other plates.
Last year, we had a similar long experience, but the food made up for it. But now two times the experience has been substandard, and for us, it will be the last time. So, if you decide to try Roy’s, you should probably stick to an off night, in the off season, and avoid any complicated dishes. Hopefully, it will be a true fine dining experience. Good luck with that!
