Reviews
– Food was delivered fast and plentifully.
– Service was incredible (our server, Heather, was a superstar!)
– The broth is remarkable.
Now, for those interested in more detail (all food will be given a ranking out of 10):
We had called ahead of time asking about reservations- and they said it was walk-in only. However, upon arrival, they were prioritizing those with reservations… which was confusing. Regardless, they made accommodations (after a short wait) and believe me: the wait was worth it.
We placed two orders of Takoyaki (7.5) and one of fried mushrooms (8.5), and both came out within 10~ minutes of ordering, which were delivered by a cute little robot. The Takoyaki could have been a little crunchier but were healthily sized and well-seasoned. The fried mushrooms were perfectly crunchy, subtly seasoned, and were simply an excellent vegetarian option.
The drinks came out next! We ordered a bunch of bubble teas- two large coconuts (4), one large Thai (4) and a small honeydew (8). The honeydew was excellent, not too sweet and well flavored. Unfortunately, one of the coconuts and Thai both suffered from tasting very diluted.
After asking our server, Heather, she INSISTED on remaking my Thai iced tea and said the coconut would be free of charge. After dashing off, she bolted right back with two (two!) re-made small iced teas, one Thai and one honeydew- both of which were free of charge!! The Thai was better flavored, but still lacked sweetness. The honeydew, however, was perfect.
As another small bonus, the remade teas also had much less ice.
Now, for the meat of the meal!:
The hot pot ingredients (all featured in the attached pictures) came out not much later, and included generous portions for the price with very pretty presentations. The broths- hot and sour (9) and a vegetarian variant of the golden chicken (8)- were finely seasoned and paired well with all manner of the lovely sauces provided.
Now, for the extra notes!:
– Atmosphere was simple- not anything crazy, but didn’t feel lacking, either. 6.5/10.
– The sauces, though delicious, were unmarked? A small name with a description would be helpful addition.
– As always, I like to review the restrooms- and these were.. fine, I guess? For once, I have nothing to say. 5/10.
– No soda or desserts were on the menu. If you don’t like bubble tea and don’t/can’t drink alcohol, you’ll find your options sparse. Additionally, those with sweet tooths might be out of luck.
– I feel the need to reiterate how excellent our server (and the service in general) was. Smiles, speed, and sweetness all around. 9/10!!!
All in all, for our first time trying hot pot, Sun Korean has set the bar very high. Though they’re still fresh, and still definitely working out some of the kinks that come with that- they’re set to grow into such a treat of a restaurant. I’ll definitely be coming back, hopefully once they’ve fully settled in. Currently Sun Korean gets a 7.5/10 overall from me, but I wholeheartedly believe that rating to spike to a 9 within hopefully just a few months. 5 stars!!!✨
Condiments?: aside from being low to empty, having a “bar” in the back doesn’t really bode with us fat foodies who lament having to get up to get them. Any way to get them to the table? On a positive note the vegetables were fresh, the tea aromatic, and the service was fast. I might have to give it another chance picking other menu items and perhaps will bring my own kimchee…I will share if you ask nicely!
BBQ Squid appetizer was a miss for us. Large squid tubes were like chewing on rubber tire so a definite miss.
Chashu Pork and Crispy Chicken bowls for our entrees. Both bowls were decent with the broths a bit nondescript till I wandered over to the sole condiment station to tweak it to our taste. Pork belly was hard to cut since was sliced so thin. The eggs were perfectly done.
We may come back again.
