I live in Japan where good American
pie is impossible to find. That’s why I travel to Tates in Umapine Oregon. Sure I have to travel 5864 miles to get good pie but it goes to show just how good the homemade pie is. All of the food is homemade and the owner is the cook and baker. If you’re into pie like I am, go to Tates for the best pie of the Pacific. When you go to Tates, make sure to say hi to Tara for me.

I was passing through Milton freewater and was looking for a great local spot. I stumbled upon a place that was in a little town I hadn’t heard of(newish to area). It’s in an older building and inside is a very cozy feel. One could tell the inside had not been updated you much(which is amazing). It has a well used and well maintained feel to the place. A selection of a few quick grab food items, drinks, and some local made good.

The owner/cook/meal prep/server informed me they were in between meals and only had deli sandwiches. I asked if they were more of a place with a rotating menu and one just sees what’s for food. She said pretty much and I thought it great. Better to have one very well made meal than a bunch of them made in a haste.

So I had a simple but well made turkey sandwich with some chips and macaroni salad. The sandwich was a standard hardy sandwich that filled me(I will be back for other food options, I am intrigued). The macaroni salad was not overly “wet” as too many people make it. I finished it off with a slice off apple/ huckleberry pie. I love pie and happy to finish the meal with it.

As I waited for food and while eating, the whole time(I should have gotten her name) she was prepping good for dinner, but was willing to ask my questions about her establishment and the local area. She was very busy and stopped to make me a sandwich. I’m guessing the locals do not normally show between meals.

I sat alone in relative quiet with a good meal after a pretty good day. I appreciate your hospitality and will take the trek from Pendleton to eat there again.

I really really want to try their other food options, but very satisfied with being fed and taken care of in the interim. Local area is beautiful and a bunch of farms and such.

Tara and Rob catered our son’s Rehearsal dinner. The Tri-tip was absolutely perfect, the sides and desserts (there were 5 ) were outstanding! Milton Freewater is so lucky to have them in this community!!!

Went for my first time last Friday night and had their pulled pork tacos. They were absolutely to die for. I plan on going back to give them a try for lunch next week.

This restaurant is an absolute gem. The food is fabulous, value for money as good as it gets and the service amazing. The waiter, Tavin, wanted a bad review, so he would get the sack, but he truly one of the best, so I’m afraid he’s doomed to a lifetime of being a great waiter!
If I didn’t live half a world away, I’d be here every Friday night.
Keep up the great work, guys.

8 of us happened upon Tates while on a bike ride that started in Walla Walla. I don’t know who helped us but the guy was great. He was very accommodating, even opening the outdoor seating for our group. They did a quick wipe down of tables and chairs and we were good to go. He was great, too, at sharing historical facts about the area. Our deli sandwiches that we ordered were very good and hit the spot. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

Fried Chicken Friday is amazing! The burgers at dinner are stupid good. The owners are friendly as can be. This place is as charming as you’ll find in the Walla Walla Valley.

Umapine may seem forever from Walla Walla, but a not too far drive down state line road or through The Rocks via 332/Sunnyside is in and of itself worth the effort. Go on a Friday for lunch on a beautiful day and have the best fired chicken dinner within a couple of hundred miles. Lunch is generally only sandwiches, but dinner is full on and awesome. Follow their FB page for daily specialty items and evens.

Sidetrip: Wash it down with a beer across the street at the Water Hole if you’ve got the time.
