Dowling’s is a darling of New York City residents and visitors alike, an experience as much as it is an exquisite restaurant. Dine at Dowling’s often enough and you are sure to see someone famous, where, even if it’s not your fancy, the sightings nonetheless contribute to the joyful mood in the room.

Dining and Dowling’s is of course expensive, and the prices are lofty, but that’s part of the ticket to admission. The food is scrumptious and the service sublime with an attentive staff and that alone can suffice.

The dim lighting and the mix of colors create a wonderful ambiance, as does the coziness of the relatively small yet thoughtful dining room, along with its outer perimeter, where guests sit in joyful spirits on the fringe of the famed Bemelman’s Bar amid a reddish tint that emanates from the lighting and decor.

Think beyond the food even as you enjoys the savory fare at Dowling’s and experience classic New York.

Came here for restaurant week but since it was the last day they said they were only doing dinner (did not appreciate this information not being on the site). Food was overpriced and mid—the bisque was much too salty and the lobster quite chewy. I got the burger, and the patty itself was bland, which I could clearly taste despite having sauce, onions, etc. to go with it. The truffle fries were decent, and my friend did like the croque madame, saying that the bread was well toasted. And the bananas foster was solid as well (I credit this to Mustak, the person who made it, as opposed to the kitchen itself.) But considering the steep pricing for this meal, I’d say not worth overall.

So all of that gets a 3/5, tops. However, I would very much like to shout out Mustak, the captain who was on shift, for his kindness. He noticed that I was having some throat problems and whipped up a little home remedy for me, which I was so grateful for. We struck up a lovely conversation and at the end my meal, he brewed up another pot of that remedy for me. I’m deeply appreciative of the compassion he showed and for the brief (but will stick with me for a long time) connection we made. 5/5 for Mustak, who was the best part of my experience here.

I visited today for their Restaurant Week menu. Based on their website and in-house menu, I chose the half-dozen oysters as my starter and steak frites as my main dish. However, when my order arrived, I noticed there were only three oysters. Upon asking, I was told that they had downsized the portion for the Restaurant Week menu—something that was not mentioned anywhere beforehand. This felt misleading. The steak was decent, but the portion was disappointingly small. Overall, it was a terrible experience. Given the overpriced menu, average food quality, and less-than-welcoming service, I won’t be returning.

So so good!! The escargot was actually insane and the drinks to die for. Also the peanut butter caramel pretzel ice cream? Insane. 20/10 recommend

Had breakfast here two mornings in a row while staying at the hotel. The dining space is nice but had an unappetizing smell while I was there. Similarly, the breakfast was fine but nothing to write home about and both mornings it was over $50 for breakfast for one. It’s convenient when staying in the hotel and service is good but I wouldn’t come for a meal if I was not already in the hotel.

We had an overall great lunch experience at Dowling’s within the Carlyle. The food and service were great, and I absolutely loved the elegant decor of the dining room. This is a great spot on the Upper East Side!

Yummy food and great service. One of the best burgers in town. Now, this is a truly expensive restaurant where drinks can be $35+ so you’ve been warned. The environment has no natural light, so perhaps best for the winter months. This restaurant is regularly on restaurant week so plan accordingly.

First, the service is about as good as anyone would ever want. The main server was knowledgeable and helpful with menu choices. And the Captain was a local who gave great background information about the rich history of the restaurant and how your order was sourced.

Dowling’s was renovated and the decor is stunning. The atmosphere is amazing which keeps it far from the madding crowd of restaurants-in-hotels vibe.

The tuna tartare was light, cheerful and a great way to start off.

The dover sole is a rarity in the city. It is prepared and deboned table-side. It has a light, lemon, taste that melts in your mouth.

Similarly, the lamb shank is tender and falls off the bone.

Do not pass up on Dowling’s at the Carlyle! The staff made us feel like VIPs. And the food backed it up. It was a wonderful experience that we will definitely have again.
