Big Disappointment

We have been looking for a good seafood restaurant since moving to Franklin County from Little River, SC a few months ago. Discovered Off the Hook online and could not wait to give it a try. WOW! What a letdown! We approached the dinner with a lot of hope, expectation and really wanted it to be good. With every dish we tried hard to convince ourselves that it was at least OK, but it just went from bad to worse.

The Hush Puppies are those skinny little doughnut kind. Not so bad, and we could have accepted them if the rest of the meal was good – which it wasn’t. Next up was the Clam Chowder and Brunswick Stew. The Chowder did have a good amount of Clam bits, but it was not close to being a chowder. It was thin and weak and tasted odd. The Brunswick Stew was as bad as any I have ever had. I was also thin, but it did have a lot of flavor – unfortunately, the overpowering flavor was just plain weird – no other way to describe it.

There was one item that we really liked – the fried Oysters. These were tender and juicy on the inside, tasted great, and had that wonderful Calabash style breading. A definite winner.

But then came the Deviled Crab. If it were not served in the crab shell, I would have thought that I was eating turkey stuffing. It was mealy and pasty with little or no crab flavor. The Potato Salad was unremarkable – potatoes with a little mayo and virtually no seasonings or anything else to bring it to life. We finished our meal with a slice of Key Lime Pie – another disappointment. The pie filing was OK, but the topping (not sure exactly what it was) was gooey and sticky.

I tried to figure out why the food was so underwhelming. The only thing I can come up with is that it must all come directly out of a can or freezer (with no additions or embellishments by the cooks). It was all so very institutional.

The dining area is roomy and comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful; but, the food is not good. We truly wish it were better, but we won’t be back.

We had a couple different things, some fried and some broiled. Hush puppie rings to start were very good. The fried stuff was made fresh, had a nice crust and were very tasty. The broiled shrimp was good but the scallops were overcooked. Clam chowder was good but wasn’t that hot. These are small things that could be easily corrected so hoping this feedback will help.

So disappointed in off the hook. As shown in the pics I was sent home with uncooked flounder, poor seasoned food and these skimpy chicken tenders. When I showed the manager what I was given all she could say was I’m sorry & offer a few shrimp. No offer to re cook, I literally had to go home and finish cooking it myself. Sad this place is going down hill and good customer service isn’t valued as it should. They lost a customer this evening. Pray they learn and do better if they want to stay open.

So let me say this a diamond in the ruff. Honestly you would drive pass it. It was a nice low key establishment. Nothing fancy tucked away in a odd spot. We were on a hunt for seafood since the first place tanked. We arrived they sat us immediately only one waitress working who was a beast(Joney). She was on it didn’t miss a beat and made us feel like the only guess on a relatively busy Friday evening. They hush puppies were delish. However the food was okay. We order the sampler appetizers which was decent all fried. Then the three choice, crab cluster and beer wine. Overall it was good! But the food was a bit lacking in flavor. But again great customer service excellent service. For her to be the only one she is priceless. That alone will warrant a second chance.

What a wonderful find. Knowing nothing of this town, we asked about somewhere to eat lunch. This place was highly recommended to us so we decided to try it. Walking in the door, we were welcomed. The atmosphere was cheery and inviting. We ordered jumbo shrimp plates with coleslaw and fries. I’m picky about my coleslaw and this was really good. The shrimp was wonderful. I also highly recommend this place. After our meals and before our long ride home, we made a trip into the rest rooms, they were a huge surprise as they had ocean scenes painted on the walls. The staff was super friendly and appreciative of us and our comments on the food and on the place. So if you’re heading near Rolesville, NC, stop and check them out!

The customer service was A1 I love how they greeted me with a smile. Very southern in a very very nice way. The food was good. A couple of items wasn’t the best, but overall I would give it an A-

We Door Dashed and the delivery was excellent. The food was not seasoned at all. The fish was hot there was NO SEASON, the potato salad was hot and running. The hush puppies were good. Everthing was really basic. It wasn’t to our liking.

What many people may not realize is that this is not the original Off the Hook Seafood that built its reputation and had everyone’s taste buds talking. The original operators are gone, yet the new owners continue to leverage the established brand name.

From the moment you walk in, they’ll assure you the food is “the same,” but it simply isn’t. The difference is clear on the plate. The shrimp, for example, arrives veined and poorly cleaned, which takes away from both presentation and flavor. Rather than the fresh, thoughtful preparation that regulars grew to love, the dishes here feel rushed—simply thrown together and served hot.

While the name may be familiar, the quality is not. For diners expecting the legendary Off the Hook Seafood experience, this version falls short. The original flavor, attention to detail, and consistency that made the brand popular have unfortunately left with the previous owners

The staff was nice, but I am highly disappointed with my catfish plate. Presentation 100%. The fish was fried beautifully but as soon as I picked it up it fell apart. It was soft, wet, and mushy. There was a lot of grease in the bottom of the carryout tray. I had to put paper towels underneath the fish to absorb it. My okra was cold and old. I couldn’t eat any of it. The baked potatoe had so many grits on the peeling that as I was eating it I could feel them. It was gross.
