Runaway Kitchen is a smashburger spot serving up burgers, fries and shakes with care and a whole lot of heart. We grind our own chuck and brisket blend in-house and take pride in the little things – like striving for the perfect smash on every patty, hand-cut fries, and our house-made Runaway Sauce. What started as a food truck during the pandemic has grown into a local favorite, with a home base in Salem and our original mobile unit still hitting the road on weekends. We also cater weddings, parties, and events of all sizes – bringing the same quality, energy, and flavor that built this thing from the ground up.

We stopped here for lunch on a whim today and ohmygoodness. We are definitely coming back. We debated whether or not we should do another day date or a date night. Either way, we will be going back.
The burgers were so delicious. I got the bacon smashburger and my husband got The Whole Farm smashburger. They’re a good size and all the ingredients seemed fresh. I love that my lettuce had a little bit of a crunch to it. The bacon was thick and the smashed patty was generous.
The shoestring fries were the perfect amount of crispy with no oiliness. We were surprised at how many came with the meal. And the sauces were super good, too. We got both the ranch and the Runaway Sauce. It was clear both were homemade, which I really liked.
Yes, it’s a little pricey, but we wholeheartedly agree that the food was well worth the price. We will update when we try the ice cream next time we are there.

We have had Runaway multiple times in Stayton but this was our first time at their new location (and truck!) in Salem, located right beside Fussy Duck off Commercial.
This is one of those reviews where I’m not going to go on a long winded rant about how good these burgers are. You don’t need to read this. You need to go freaking try their smash burgers. They are, without a doubt, the best smash burger we’ve ever had, period. You will not find a better burger, I promise you.
And after you get their smash burger, get their fries which are equally criminally good, and their shakes are just fire, liquid fire.

I am so glad my family found this food truck!!! Best burgers EVER!! The workers are great! They always accommodate my food preferences(for example:raw onions instead of grilled)! Friendly service! Everything is always seasoned so perfectly! I can not recommend this place enough for a great burger! Go try it!!!

I have been eating there fairly regularly over the past year or so, of course for the delicious food, but because I want to check consistency and quality. Here’s what I have come up with.
In the hundreds of burgers I eat every year, I have never had one that has had me drive to their business on accident, almost like muscle memory.
It’s official, my body craves their food.
The beef is very fresh, seasoned to taste every order, smashed to perfection.
Produce is always cold and crispy, there is never a question of whether ypu want veggies or not.
The fries are standard cut, fried in beef tallow (from what I understand) and are consistent every time I’ve had them.
If you are there for more than just the standard menue items, the have an array of other fun menue items including a boozy menue, shakes, and a mixture of both.
The environment is pleasant, and the family that owns and operates this well oiled machine are beyond incredible.
I wanted to give them a fair review, and with every fair review comes transparency.

Definitely one of the best smash burgers I have ever had. Fries are amazing. They are only open 3 days a week. I will be adding pictures next time! They also serve alcohol! Seats are limited and they are always busy.

It was decent, but my partner enjoyed their burger more than I did. Everything was more cooked than the would prefer, the patty, the bacon, and the fries. The fries were also either not salted or very lightly salted so we had to use dipping sauce. There was an option to pay $.50 for fry seasoning but I didn’t think that meant salt.
