Ordered takeout in person at Marsha’s Soul Food, as the inside was mostly roped off for a remodel and several other diners were waiting outside. The staff were friendly, and a local waiting nearby gave me a great recommendation on what to try. I ended up ordering the catfish dinner, wings, and cornbread.
The catfish breading wasn’t heavily seasoned, so I’d recommend using the many sauces they provide—just like the locals were doing. The dinner came with three fillets; two had a great texture, while one was a bit soft for my preference. The fries were plentiful and nicely seasoned.
The wings are whole shoulder pieces, so there’s a solid amount of meat. They’re also lightly seasoned, so again, sauces are the way to go.
The cornbread was the standout—sweet, crumbly, and really flavorful.
Overall, both the chicken and fish had moments where the flavor suggested the frying oil was on the older side—not burnt, but slightly caramelized. Still, a friendly spot with hearty portions and some real highlights, especially for such an affordable price for the portion size.
Both combos were $8.00 .
The wing combo came with 5 wings and fresh cut fries.
The burger combo came with two burgers with just cheese and lettuce and fresh cut fries.
The wings were plain very little seasonings. The burger was just okay and I wanted to add bacon but they were out of bacon. The fries were very dark and not taste fresh. The cooking oil should have been changed.
They did have several different sauces to add to the food. The bottles were not marked so I just drizzled a BBQ sauce on the French fries only. They did not have small containers to put sauces in if you wanted sauces on the side.
There is not a seating area for you to wait for your food and the parking is on the street.
Over all for my first impression it was not the best. The price was affordable.
I believe if the fries and chicken would have been cooked in fresh cooking oil it would have been better. And not to have containers for the sauce is a drawback.
I ordered around lunchtime 2:30 pm. I will try them again later in the day and I will order the chicken sandwich combo. Hopefully the second try will be better
What really sets Marsha’s apart is the atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where strangers chat like old friends, and the staff treats you like family. On my last visit, I watched as a regular walked in and was greeted by name, their usual order already being prepared before they even sat down. It’s that kind of personal touch that makes this cafe more than just a restaurant.
If you’re looking for a place that feeds both your stomach and your soul, Marsha’s is it. I’ll definitely be back, and I recommend anyone who loves good food and good company to stop by, you won’t be disappointed!
The pic below is from their instagram, it was just such a good pic that captured the vibe of the place I wanted it to be on their Google reviews as well
