So Mala Cafe and Grill is wonderful. I’ve been here with a friend for lunch a few times and have always had a great experience! Very welcoming and friendly staff. They are very generous and the food has always been great!

My husband & I try a new restaurant once a week & last night we tried So Mala. I never leave reviews (I believe this is my first), but staff asked me for feedback & they deserve it! The food was phenomenal. I got the beef suqaar meal & my husband got the chicken suqaar. We got takeout & ate it nearby the capitol, then maybe 30 minutes later we ended up finishing all of it off! Was hoping for leftovers but it was too good to leave anything behind. Staff was friendly & I loved getting a free banana with each meal, taking bites of banana between mouthfuls of rice & meat was superb. Inside the restaurant was clean & basic, nothing special but would have no issues eating there.

Had chicken suqar. Was delicious, with fresh colorful flavor. Enjoyed eating with malawax. Somali tea was excellent. Prices seemed reasonable. The owner, Aweis, was very welcoming and friendly. He helped us learn some Somali words! Will come back.
Came back 2nd time. Enjoyed the goat!

Stopped in to So Mala Cafe for the first time recently and I was thoroughly pleased with my experience. The crew was friendly and helped me decide what to order. I ordered the goat meat and rice platter, the chicken wrap with fries, and the fried fish and rice! They generously gave me sambusa to eat while I was waiting for my order. Everything tasted great! The fried fish platter was my personal favorite but we all enjoyed the food. You’ll find quality Somali and Mediterranean food here!

I had a taste for Somali flavored Goat Meat & Rice and had seen this place a few time while at work. I was a little surprised they had goat meat at 6:30pm. I am very pleased with the service, the freshness of the food, and the cleanliness of the restaurant. The portions was way larger than other Somali restaurants I’ve visited in south Minneapolis and the cook the goat in green peppers and onions (great flavor). Also if you like spicy, they will cook your goat with the oh so good green spice that’s usually on the side. I will be back again soon. My meal is the $15.99 goat meat meal.

“Sō Māla. This place going in, you can smell the food they cooked. The place is clean and very welcoming by the staff. They greeted me the second I came through the doors. The food I ordered was beef suqaar meal. Man when the staff came out of the kitchen with the take out container, I could smell the food and it was so good. I was drooling at that point smelling the food. The food was super affordable and it’s a lot. It can feed two people at least with the meal. While tasting it without the lemon and the green sauce which is spicy, man the food is super good like damn you don’t need extra sauce or lemon on it. But putting the lemon and the green sauce took it to the next level. ❤️❤️ The beef is super good and chewy which I like and it has good flavor with it. Overall the food is bomb ❤️ 9/10.”

This is a great black owned business that serves Somalian food. The customer service was good, and I love the inside of this business. I would recommend this business to anyone who likes East African food.

We (hubby and I) happened to be close by and hadn’t tried any Somalian food yet (new here), so we tried based on the reviews. It really is SO good! It’s a ton of food for the price and the young gentleman who greeted and made our food was so polite! I got the chicken suqaar and the flavor was very interesting in a good way! We also had malawax(?) I believe it was called. It was a little sweet pancake with honey that was delicious as well. My husband is already planning to come back for the goat, since it was sold out when we came by.

What a gem. The staff/owners were friendly and helpful. The portions for the suqaar were ample. I had the goat and chicken, I probably liked the seasoning profile on the goat more than the chicken. The rice they came with was fantastic – perfectly cooked and seasoned. It wasn’t busy when I was in so there was plenty of time to chat with the staff. I am definitely going back.
