I went with a coworker and we both grabbed the yo’ momma’s chicken sandwich. It was simple with the black pepper pickle relish mayo giving it a little lift. Service was so so nothing special but not a bother either. We did not wait forever and the food was prepared just fine. The spot felt casual and good for a quick lunch. I would go back if I needed something laid back and filling.

We had a great experience at the Budlong in Lincoln Park! Manny was awesome & SO helpful throughout the meal.
We tried a few different items on the menu, including their delicious Southern Style chicken sandwich with pimento cheese (Nashville style!) as well as the creamy Mac and cheese and the banana pudding which was SO good. Plus, it was pretty cheap for everything that we got!
The interior was rustic & homey, and it is so clear that a ton of effort was put into making this a cool spot to be at. I’d highly recommend it!

I’m always looking for new favorites and decided to try Budlong. I figured a chicken sandwich and fries would be a decent meal, but I’m not sure how much I actually liked it. There was a bit too much pimento cheese for my liking and it overwhelmed the flavor of the chicken. The fries, however, were very tasty with their seasoning. I’m not sure it’s quite worth the price though given that it cost me $18 whereas I can similar quality for cheaper and better meals for the same price.

I got the Hot Chicken sandwich with everything on it. It was delicious but not as juicy as other reviewers are saying. The Mac&Cheese was amazing. It had a nice little kick to it. The fries were cut thick. Definitely getting what you pay for.

Lots of highs and lows here. The chicken is great, cooked well and the heat is perfect. The Mac and cheese was only okay and the fried cornbread was actively weeping oil. Next time I might just ditch the sides

I really wanted to love this place, but at the price I just can’t justify it. They price themselves as the best fried chicken sandwich in Chicago, and I think they’re close. But I’d still say it wasn’t perfect. The chicken itself was very crispy and quite juicy, but I’d really like to see a sweeter coleslaw to balance out the heat, I think it’d go a long way. The mac and cheese was okay but again not worth the price tag.

I really enjoyed my time at this place. The staff was very nice and the restaurant was extremely clean. My food came out in a good amount of time, though I will say that I came at a time when there was really no one there. I ended up getting the Yo’ Mamma xetra spicy chicken sandwich with thigh meat, and I loved every single bite of it.

The chicken sandwiches here are outrageously delicious. You can choose the level of spicyness you want. Classic, hot, or extra hot. All the spicing is made from Nashville spicing recipe style. The tenders are the second fan favorite. So yummy but don’t underestimate the spice. The “classic” is pretty darn spicy.

The Budlong has always been someplace I’ve kept close to me. I went there for the first time to what I believe was one of their first Chicago locations in Broadway back in 2016. As this was my most recent visit this month of March 2021, their chicken was just as good if not better from my original visit. I know, I know, is that even possible that the chicken could be even better? But believe me it is! This was their location on Armitage. I arrived when. They opened at 11 but was not the first one there. Due to covid, the indoor dining was limited to 3-4 tables which is understand able. I didn’t not feel one bit uncomfortable while eating there as I felt the social spacing is more than adequate. Now as for the chicken I did order their quarter chicken plate that comes with a drum and thigh. I had it middle or second from the top heat level which is perfect for me. Now, please note, the chicken is hot as it comes right from the cooker. I got a call and had to break into the chicken 5-10 minutes after it arrived and it was still steaming under that beautiful Nashville spiced surface. Juicy isn’t even the right word to describe how perfectly this chicken is cooked. I’m going to just have to use the term “bananas!” which is what I told my friend whilst on the phone with him. For me, it doesn’t get better than The Budlong Hot Chicken if I lived closer I would be having it more often/every chance I get! I did have the cherry cola and banana pudding. I do have photos below and I wanted for you to please excuse my photo of the decimation as I wanted to capture the sauces that were provided which I suggest you not miss. That photo captures a little of the plate after I crushed my chicken
For me, this was the perfect way to start my weekend but as I think of it, it was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time since the pandemic. I’m attaching a picture just so you can see what every Nashville Hot Chicken should look like. For me, this is the benchmark for Nashville Hot Chicken and I am very lucky to have it here in Chicago. As I told my friend when I sent him this photo – “You want this!”

This place is excellent. The atmosphere is really cool, with excellent themed decor that doesn’t seem kitschy or overdone, just comfortable and sweet. My wife and I intended to order out, but we would up sticking around and eating in cause the atmosphere was so excellent and the staff was so friendly and bright. And I think that really tells you something, I wanted to change my plans to enjoy the space!
Now the food–the classic sandwich is just excellent. I got mine one step up on the spicy scale and enjoyed a subtle sizzle on my tongue throughout but didn’t need to stop to let it cool at any point. The chicken is delicious, the toppings are excellent and don’t get in the way of the massive filet you’re enjoying, and the bun holds together well despite the oppressive flow of sauce from the chicken and the slaw. The collard greens were…..ok. wouldn’t get those again as they took away from an otherwise great meal–hard to find good collard greens sometimes.
But overall verdict, easy five stars. Will be back again–to this lovely location in particular because of the friendly and inviting staff and environment.
