Their spring rolls are massive, and more like some kind of Thai burrito. The basil and vegetables inside were really fresh, the shrimp were really tender, and with the little peanut dipping sauce on the side it was amazing.
We had Kings chicken, Penang fish, and green curry. They were all excellent.
The King chicken, which reminded me of a Thai Brown Curry or a massaman curry, was incredibly flavorful and it was clear from the flavor that they had used the entire chicken to make the stock themselves. There’s just a certain flavor when you’ve boiled those bones down yourself and they had it in spades. That dish was a slap in the face of wonderful chicken flavors, in the best way possible. It was also chock full of fresh vegetables, the highlight being some great red onion that was thrown in there and really tied the whole thing together.
The green curry had that wonderful hint of herbaceousness that makes real Thai food sing. It’s a combination of mint, ginger, cilantro, love, and beautiful culture and history. They take all that and they boil it in a pot and you get real Thai green curry. And that is exactly what you’re going to get at Sweet Thai restaurant.
The Penang fish was a smart choice on their part in that they used chunks of fish. Anyone who’s been to big Thai restaurants knows this one of those hero dishes you get at the table and it’s a big fish covered in amazing Curry, but being this far from the ocean they probably played it safe in using chunks of fish. Having said that this is the one thing I wouldn’t order again. I don’t deem it worthy of a knock of a star off their rating because everything else was so good. This wasn’t a bad dish, and the flavor was amazing, the curry was exceptionally rich and thick. But it just wasn’t what I was expecting, and I probably should have listened to my gut and avoided a seafood dish this far from the sea.
My partner and I also got just about every Thai drink they had available, which I think they make themselves. We had Thai coffee, Thai tea, and a ginger drink. The ginger drink was in a big cooler and being served as if they had made it there in the store, not from a vending machine or a bag. It was incredibly bright, and really helped to cut some of the heat from the Penang curry.
The Thai iced tea itself was wonderful, it was nice and strongly flavored, and it was obvious they had brewed that tea there themselves. When I mixed it together it had that classic red color.
The iced coffee was amazing too, with just enough richness to cut the strong bitter coffee notes, and a wonderful hint of chocolate on the palate at the end. All in all their drinks were amazingly refreshing and I would highly recommend them alone, but you’ve also got some amazing Thai food coming out of that kitchen from someone who clearly knows what they’re doing. So don’t forget to order a lot of that as well.
I was impressed and you can definitely taste the difference when something is made homemade. The restaurant felt welcoming. The owner Hai is amazing.
We can’t wait to try the curry. My son has never tried it before and I was wondering if you could make a suggestion for a first timer.
Food was good and generous, but I was overcharged without notice
I ordered around noon today (11/4/20). I asked for mango with sweet rice for dessert. They said they were out of mangos but could substitute fried bananas. At no time was I notified that I would be forced to pay full price for two orders of sticky rice (without the mango) PLUS full price for two orders of fried bananas. I had a family member pick up the order, and the total was not quoted to me on the phone. Because they did not give me an adjusted total, I assumed that I would be paying the regular price for the mango sticky rice. So, imagine my surprise when he got home and told me it was $10 more than expected.
The “Excellent and Kindly Service” that Sweet Thai claims to have was clearly not shown to me today. I don’t expect perfection, but I do expect to be charged honestly. Service like this makes it hard for me to continue to support local restaurants.
