Penn’s serves the most delicious cheeseburgers I’ve ever had. They use a Depression Era recipe which includes breading mixed with ground beef. I recommend getting minimal toppings so you can get a real taste of the burger patty itself. The onion rings are also delicious. Their prices are very reasonable. I don’t make it to Decatur very often. When I do, I go by Penn’s and buy a bunch of single patties to bring home and freeze for later. I don’t know how anyone could rate this place as 1 star. Definitely go check it out. It’s unlike any other burger place out there.

I am not happy to post this. I’ve been eating CF Penn burgers since the 70s. Since they moved from their old Moulton St. location, they are not nearly as good as they used to be. These burgers have always used heavy amounts of filler, but the raw patties used to be pink before they were cooked…now they are white. Is there actually beef in there at all anymore?
Also, they tend to be undercooked (raw and mushy in the middle) more often than not in my experience. If you ask for “extra crispy”, you get them about the doneness level they are supposed to be.
Haven’t come away pleased in quite a while. I guess I should just stop going there.

I just started working in Decatur a few wks ago. I had seen the C.F. Penn sign and thought these bugers will be old school fantastic. Nope…Theee worst hamburger or rather double cheese burger I EVER had. Ever!!! The texture is weird/gross, the onion rings were tasty, but I didn’t go there for onion rings. Yuck, just YUCK!

I have been eating Penn’s cheeseburgers my entire life. My grandma used to bring me here as a child. Now, anytime I can get to Decatur before they close, I try to stop and get one. The burgers are awesome! You do need to know what you’re getting before you order it, or you might be confused. They serve what is called a “slug” burger. Originally named that because when they opened, the burgers cost a nickel. These burgers are from an era where times were hard, so “fillers” like bread crumbs were used in the patties to make the meat feed more people. The burgers are also deep fried. I love to get mine “all the way” which means with mustard and onions. Everyone should try them at least once.

This place does not serve burgers made of beef.
Our first red flags when we walked in and the person behind the cash register asked if we had been there before.
Second red flag was that the “burgers” were stacked next to the trough of oil and not refrigerated.
The burger meat is mushy and grey. GREY!
Pretty sure they are serving possum or human or insect patties.
Even the fries and onion rings lacked any flavor.
My cousin had a theory that the list of “people” that ate 10 burgers was actually a memorial list because no way a human could eat 1 of those let alone 10.
My theory is that list is the “best” aliens that have eaten the most human burgers or insect burgers.
In conclusion if you like cheeseburgers/hamburgers made of beef steer clear of this place it almost ruined burgers for me.

Burger was the worst I’ve ever tried to eat. The meat was full of bread or some type of filler and I think they fry the meat. It was terrible and expensive. The staff was friendly and working hard though.

They bark at you when you sit down to come to the register to order . Definitely not Nesmiths!! Not a place I’d visit again . Burgers are ok. Not a friendly atmosphere. Kinda disappointed. Not how it was when I was growing up at all .

Well… the location pictured is not where I stopped… I must have been caught in a time warp. More relaistic I bet they have moved to a less costly real estate location. Either way the burgers were unique, good and hot. The only reason I gave the food four stars was that I was tasting it all afternoon long. Other than that I’d probablly go back. Thanks.

Absolutely the most disgusting “hamburger” I have ever tried to eat. I’d give 0 stars if I could. Fries were hit and tasty! Burger was disgusting. We threw ours away and left.

If I could give zero stars I would. My soul will never forgive me for this. The burgers are meat mixed with bread a deep fried. How they somehow use less meat than McDonald’s is amazing. I didn’t think it possible. Please don’t mistreat yourself like I did and eat here. Even the cashier described the burger with sadness in here eyes. I’m too fat minded for this depression Era bread burger.
