Reviews
Before the reservation, we went next door to Bar Cren. We knew that we would opt for the wine tasting menu and decided to take one quick shot beforehand…
Customer service is phenomenal and friendly —
From entering the restaurant to ending, every single worker here treated us with kindness. They joked with us about how we wanted to take 1942 shots next door and set a jovial mood. The sommeliers did a great job at explaining how each wine pairing would complement the dish and then also pointed out how it could complement other dishes that we were having. I don’t remember their name specifically but there was a lady with the blonde bob cut and the tall gentleman with the slickback hair, they were amazing and made our experience so much more enjoyable.
Every dish had a ton of flavor and could not decide which is my favorite —
(I am not going to outline the tasting menu but I will point out the main ingredient in my favorite dishes)
The first round brought out several dishes and my favorite from the selection was definitely the uni and the oyster. Such an explosion of flavors with each bite.
I don’t want to dissect and give away their tasting menu but it was pescatarian! There were scallops, kind crab, geoduck, black cod, abalone, madai! A smorgasbord of critters with sauce reductions topped off with truffles. My favorite was the black cod with spiced yogurt! The brioche bun with their cultured butter was fantastic. Best bread from a restaurant I’ve ever had.
The dessert menu was cultivated by a pâtissier? The mochi was delicious and I dropped my citrus pillow. The wafer and “blackberry” icecream was so unique. Cream shaped into blackberries! Should be on food network for sure.
Heavy on the wine pairing, a must. There were a total of 8 1 oz glasses. Heavy on ordering, not them pouring. They don’t want to overdo it. They want you to enjoy the experience without being completely inebriated. Although, we did take shots next door…
Then Dominique came out! She made the rounds and said hello to everyone. Very personable, had some laughs and light conversation with her. Such a unique, personable experience that blew every other one out of the water.
Overall, best Michelin star I’ve been to (I’ve been to about 10 now). Amazing staff, amazing food, and amazing owner!
The ambiance was chic and yet casual. The pop music seemed incongruous. No dress code (some guests in suits and some in jeans).
The service was given at our pace, with not a moment wasted, and yet the experience lasted about 2 1/2 hours. We didn’t have just one server, but each server rotated as the courses progressed, working as a team.
Each course was a work of art, presenting a variety of flavors and textures. There were a few courses I found somewhat heavy on the salt, but my husband disagreed.
This kind of dining is different from anything we’d experienced before. Instead of small amuse bouches leading to main courses, the entire meal consisted of these little bites, perhaps 15 or 20. At the end of the evening, we walked away full, physically and mentally. This is not comfort food. It is an exercise in culinary study.
Michael brought me here for a truly unforgettable evening. The entire meal was light, graceful, and full of stories — every dish felt like a gentle yet powerful expression of artistry. It’s not just dinner, it’s an intimate journey where time slows down and conversation flows effortlessly.
We were already trying to find an excuse to come back before we left!
The restaurant is physically compact, and service is exceptional as to be expected. We were able to dine a full 15 minutes before our reservation without complaint. Wood and soft cloth dominate the decor, which is creatively distributed to both muffle sound and make the room feel larger than it really is. The design is very tasteful and once again ‘cozy’, like you are in Crenn’s home; in effect you are— and you will be treated to meals that remind her of her family and inspirations in her past.
From texture to temperature, shape, size, color… there are stacked meanings inside the courses here that give an extra dimension to this experience. You can expect to spend a well-paced 2+ hours here on a delectable set of 12+ plates bookended on both sides by delectable small bites. At one point guests select their own knives from a box of hand-made implements each with a story to tell. The idea of involving story and choice like this down to the level of the cutlery is a great element that sets Atelier Crenn apart.
In spring of 2025 we had a pescatarian focused menu with stellar highlights from the cod, designed to look as a whole like the California coastline – really stunning – the single best cooked fish we had ever eaten. Just before this a crab and caviar dish surrounded by an asparagus sauce really set the tone, a true highlight.
Various items are prepared in homage to other things, like olives and acorns shaped from other foods entirely. Lots of respect for the earth is shown not only in sourcing but in the direct representation of the foods on the table. The diner is reminded literally where the fish and the plants and mushrooms came from.
As expected, the bread was among the best in the world – with a delightful herbed butter. Very few compare, save for other 3 Michelin star breads.
The savory courses transition to desert with a salad infused with sweetness which is such a clever decision and works really well. Various preparations of strawberries served in a sliced half of a champagne bottle was an odd choice but paired well. — Custom chocolates bring the meal to a close and if there’s an occasion, as there was for us, a cupcake with edible gold and edible wrapper is presented at the end. All stunning.
This dining experience a well-curated elevation of perhaps typical regional cuisines and a form of love letter to Crenn’s influences and family. You leave feeling warm and well cared for, and of course full of delicious food.
If you do visit, relish in becoming part of the story, if only for a night.
