I’ve now been here three times. My bf has been coming to Dunellen BBQ on and off for 10 yrs. This is a family run Portuguese/Spanish style BBQ restaurant.
This place was hopping. The staff is very friendly and they all were working very hard to get everyone’s orders ready. The staff is very nice.
I placed my order to go for (2) half orders of BBQ Chicken Combo. A 1/2 order comes with a half a chicken cut up into 4 pieces of bbq chicken, a choice of yellow rice, black or red beans, fries, or salad. They also serve several different types of homemade Empanadas, Yuca, and Fried Bananas.
This is not a big place. There are a couple of tables and a few counter seats. I saw in their refrigerator they have ready to go desserts. I added 2 Flans to go with my order.
When I got home I was really surprised. They didn’t skimp on our orders. They gave me 1/2 a chicken cut up into 4 nice pieces of chicken which was juicy with a side of hot sauce and a side of their bbq sauce. Both sauces were good. I also got an abundance of delicious yellow rice with some veggies in it. I chose black beans which came in a separate container. I enjoyed everything and so did my boyfriend.
For dessert we each got a flan. I was truly surprised. My flan was super creamy, it had lots of caramel sauce on the bottom. The flan was so very good I couldn’t stop eating it. I highly recommend trying their dessert.They also sell Tres Leche Cake,Rice Pudding, Oreo Cake,Tiramisu, Cheese Cake,
Carrot Cake, and Red Velvet Cake.
Dunellen BBQ offers an extensive menu. They offer chicken, steak, and seafood along with kebabs and sandwiches.
There is a free parking lot next door. It’s small bc they share it. There’s also some street parking.
I would definitely recommend trying this place especially their BBQ Chicken Platter.

10/10 would recommend. Unlike some other BBQ Places, this one actually gives you more for your dollar. I ordered 3 beef short rib platters and they load it up so definitely worth it in my opinion. Definitely coming back cause I love the food and the people are soooo nice and helpful my first time there.

We have been ordering from this place for a few years since moving to middlesex area, but recently experienced some problems. For new years we placed a big order and upon arrival for pick up at the time we were told to be there it was pure chaos. We waited for about an hour along with 20 plus people waiting too. Unfortunately the business lacks organization for big orders and events. I wasn’t going to complain about our new years experience, but after this weekend I have to share this review in efforts that management can avoid this from happening again to new customers, we placed a big order for an event this weekend and when we called to inform them they had made an error with our order , and to please just be more careful with future orders the guy on the phone very rudely laughed and told me to be more careful when placing my order. Very rude and unacceptable customer service, hopefully you guys can re train the staff on handling communication more effectively.

I eat here SEVERAL times a month. Sometimes a few days a week when I don’t feel like cooking. Every older person that works here is rude as hell. The younger kids are so nice and sweet. Especially Sebastian. I went in there last week Tuesday and the red head lady had a disgusting demeanor. I stopped coming once before because a guy was rude. But that red head lady is the reason I’m never coming back. I even gave her a compliment and her attitude was just nasty. I have discovered Los Antojitos BBQ Middlesex and they are pleasant there and deliver so I will order from there for now on. I will also be telling my friends to follow. The food at Dunellen BBQ is good but the service needs to match. I can spend my money elsewhere. It seems that’s what they want anyway.

It’s time to say goodbye. We enjoyed coming here for the chicken and rice but to many frustrating experiences led us to finally go elsewhere.
If they are busy and hand you your food, they won’t check it, and twice food was missing from the order.
On another visit, we were told the order would be ready in 30 minutes; we arrived about 20 minutes later and still had to wait an additional 30 minutes because our food seemed to have been given away. No apologies from anyone.
Most recently, we were given beef short ribs instead of the whole chicken we ordered. My wife doesn’t eat beef, and I avoid the beef short ribs from there due to repeated bones in the meat.
On one occasion, I cracked a rear lower tooth eating the beef short ribs and had to see a dentist to have it filed down because it was scraping my tongue. I never raised the issue at the time because I thought it was my luck, but after experiencing bones in the meat about 2-3 times after that, I gave up and only ordered the chicken. I later mentioned concerns about bones in the beef shorts ribs to the staff and what appeared to be one of the main cooks, but it seemed brushed off and I was simply advised to order another steak style instead. That made me feel your just a number and not a customer.
The repeated frustration outweighs the convenience of being nearby, and we’ll be going elsewhere.

Outstandingly tasty! As much as for the red and pork meat eaters, as for the chicken and only seafood eaters, this place masters all these flavors. Not just deliciously fresh, but the amount, unbelievable! we don’t recall ever getting a lot of great food to take home and our dishes looked like we didn’t even touch them after we were done eating lol
We got the pork ribs and chicken combo and the rice and Seafood dish (not the paella). Everything, absolutely everything was delicious!

Amazing BBQ! The meat was tender, flavorful, and perfectly smoked. Sides were delicious and the portions were generous. Great atmosphere and friendly staff—definitely coming back.

A local favorite in Dunellen. This Portuguese barbecue restaurant is a very simple establishment. A good portion of their business is takeout and they do have a single table with chairs if you like to eat your meal watching them cook your food. They do offer a back room dining area. Simple decor with music and a tv screen. Service staff was friendly and attentive. We elected the shrimp in garlic sauce, a medium salad, barbecue half chicken, pork ribs and beef short ribs. Our garlic shrimp had a darker sauce that I never seen before. Typically is yellow with a hint of red from the various ingredients. Since they do not serve bread you have to request it. You always need bread to dip in the garlic sauce. The salad and entree came halfway eating our appetizer. The salad was a hit. A medium was enough for 3 maybe 4. All very fresh with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers. Onions, olives and carrots. The main entree was huge and dressed with piri-piri. Although, I like it, best to ask if we wanted on the side. Chicken was very good. The pork ribs were not trimmed. The flap, bone, etc was still there. These were not St. Louis style. Some may like it. I prefer them neat, since the cartilage serves no purpose except for those individuals who like to bite into it. Otherwise they could have them trimmed and made into sparerib bites. Our beef was cooked to the requested medium rare. Unfortunately 2 of the 3 short ribs were very fatty. The dining area was not crowded but we and another couple were eating in this room. They do offer on site parking which helps. Also its byob. Prices were high but, competitive with similar restuarants. Give this place a try.

Should have learned our lesson and stopped trying this place. HORRIBLE service. 45 minutes turned into an hour and half for basic food that should take 20. Then they forget the $16 chicken fingers, my husband has to drive back, and they catch a major attitude. Insanely rude. Dozens of other options in a 5 mile radius serving the same food. DO NOT EAT HERE.
