Casual wood- & brick-accented eatery offering BBQ specialties & other American standards.

I wish there was a way to give negative stars, because that’s honestly what this place deserves now.
Four years ago I left this restaurant a five-star review. Back then I loved everything about The Spare Rib — the food was great, the service was great, and the workers always treated people right. It used to feel like a place that cared about its customers and its staff.
But after my most recent visit, I had to come back and change that five-star review to a one-star. If I could make it negative five stars, I would.
Let me be clear about one thing: this is NOT about the food or the staff. My server and the bartender were both excellent. They were polite, professional, and did everything right. The problem is management.
While I was there, the manager was openly disrespecting employees right in front of customers. I’ve been around a long time, and I’ve eaten at a lot of restaurants, and I have to say it was one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve seen in a dining establishment. No employee deserves to be talked to like that, especially in front of the people they’re trying to serve.
It completely ruined the atmosphere of the place. A restaurant should be somewhere people feel welcome, not somewhere where staff are being put down publicly by management.
I really, truly wanted The Spare Rib to keep doing well. I’ve supported this place for years, and it’s disappointing to see it run this way now. Again, the workers and the food are not the problem. The issue is how management treats their own employees, and that reflects poorly on the entire establishment.
I’m honestly sorry I had to change my review after all these years, but I believe in keeping it real with people reading these reviews.
Until management learns how to treat their staff with basic respect, I won’t be coming back

Such a great place that we found by chance, my wife and I were traveling from Pennsylvania to car shop in New York, and on the way home we were trying to find a local restaurant, not a corporate chain to go to for dinner. She located this place and we decided to go, and she chose well. The atmosphere made me think of going into a cozy log cabin, the mood lights were perfect, the staff is always making sure everything is okay, and the food was delicious, we’re very glad we found this place and we would certainly come here again if we’re in the area. The food that is pictured, macaroni and cheese with pulled pork on top, and of course the other is a pulled pork sandwich on a toasted bun with what I believe was pickled cabbage, and sweet yams. Dinner was also served with bread and cornbread.

A friend took me on a tour of Long Island where he grew up. I got to meet Mrs. Ray who was a teacher at his school. She’s 101 now, and delightful. AND, I got to eat the best ribs ever at The Spare Rib. The environment is cozy, the service is great, and the ribs are out of this world. I had the baby back ribs. I wish they were near my house. If you go, you should order some ribs for Mrs. Ray. Somebody there has to know her. This will definitely become a regular stop for you

First time there. I would go back again. Went for a friend’s birthday. The wait time was all of 5 minutes. Our waiter was really nice(nick). We started off with fried calamari, an apple martini, and a fuzzy leprechaun drink. The portion was a good amount. Now, for the main dish, I ordered the shrimp scampi and riblets with yams and collared greens . The greens were okay, a little spicy, and had a little too much vinegar. But overall, it’s not bad. Again, nice size portion of food for the money

We arrived for dinner on a Friday evening, greeted at the podium by a very friendly hostess and escorted to our table with menus. Our server, also friendly, arrived quickly with a bread basket, and was helpful with the dinner specials. I ordered the Shrimp and Riblets, my husband ordered the chicken Cordon Bleu, with a half rack of ribs, both came with salad. My shrimp had a crab meat stuffing and were a nice size, very good. They were served over rice, which unfortunately, was cold. The riblets were cold as well. My husband enjoyed the chicken and ribs very much. Good overall experience. We’ve been here before, and will return.

Unfortunately, I had to change what used to be a 5-star review. First time back in a long while and all I can say is what happened to this place? The menu and hours were completely slashed. The bread they brought to the table was stale. All four dishes were overcooked and my steak was burned on both sides – ordered medium rare and all I tasted was charred, well done leather. The only reason they’re getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because the waitress was a delight. I’ve been coming here occasionally for the better part of 20 years and don’t remember ever having such a poor experience.
