The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees. Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Great home style food with great big sized portions! Got a turkey sandwich and the meat in that sandwich is like the good ole days at a deli shop an inch thick of meat! Came with a bowl of potato salad that was delicious. Waitress was a local lady who has worked there for 14 years and you could feel the home town atmosphere and service really appreciates that especially these days of the the typical eateries. I really recommend this place!

Edited: service is just always real slow to get food. The food is delicious though. (Betty boop also pictured) The food here is always amazing when I visit. I love their bone in hot wings. They are deliciously breaded and sauced. I tried a sandwich for the first time yesterday and it was very nice. I did build your own on rye, turkey, corn beef, Swiss cheese, bacon, coleslaw (I would like more coleslaw) and then asked if they could add thousand island. Very good and big size.

Arrived at 4:50. Received food at 6:40. Food was decent – my fish was dry and pretty hard. Everyone else enjoyed theirs. Finally received the check at 7:10. The place was not crowded.
Update: had to make an emergency restroom break 20 min after we left. I guess the fish was bad afterall.
I would not recommend this restaurant.

On the menu I would check it out online beforehand to get a feel of what you like or what you don’t like. It’s all good and I have yet to have a bad meal. The appetizer; Irish nachos is delicious. Great desserts. It kind of has it all. There will be something for everybody.

It was a quiet Saturday before Easter and the restaurant was not crowded at 7:30 when I came for dinner. I’ve regularly dined at Macados in Blacksburg and Christiansburg but this is only my third visit to the Galax restaurant. The menu has a wide selection of salads, sandwiches, quesadillas, soups and sides. I had a difficult time deciding between my long-time favorites or trying something new. I finally decided on a Macado flyer but told our waitress, Regina, that I would pass on the frisbee (flyer). I had a Michelob Ultra draft in a frosted mug that was very cold and refreshing. My sandwich arrived quickly. I selected onion rings as my free side. The sandwich was toasted lightly and piled high with ham. The other ingredients were fresh and full of flavor. It was one of the best I’ve had. The onion rings were fabulous beer-battered and were hot and crunchy on the outside with a tasty onion ring on the inside. The food was delicious and I was very pleased but the highlight of our dining experience was our waitress, Regina, who was friendly and attentive. She checked on us often, offered ketchup for my onion rings before I even asked, kept my water glass full and made sure the food was prepared to meet our expectations. She brought the check without us asking for it and took care of it quickly. Everything about this trip was positive and I’ll definitely be going back and will request Regina when I do.

Wonderful place. We live about 60 miles away in northern NC. The atmosphere is interesting. Great nostalgia on the walls and the food is awesome.

I placed a takeout order online around 3:50pm. I show up around 30 minutes later and was told my order was being bagged. Yet, I continued to wait until after 5pm. Taking over an hour to complete my order, which was only 4 entrees. Mind you, I watched a couple walk in after me place their entire order and received their food and drinks before I got anything. Then finally when I did receive my food, I didn’t receive any apology or any gesture to have a nice day or anything of the sort. I understand things happen , but they weren’t busy and clearly just didn’t care. I suggest others to think twice before ordering here.

I’m not from this area but this place was recommended to me. This place is really really good but what made it amazing was our server Regina. This place is so lucky to have her working for them. There was 11 of us and 4 of them were children. She was kind, helpful, and just amazing. When we come back to this area, we will be back at Macado’s. Thank you Regina for all of your help tonight. We really enjoyed meeting you and talking about our family.
