Just Fish in Newark, NJ is an absolute VIBE! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is cool, artsy, and full of character, it feels like culture, community, and creativity all wrapped into one space.
Now let’s talk about the FOOD… because baby, that mac and cheese deserves its own standing ovation! It literally melts in your mouth, rich, creamy, perfectly seasoned, and made with LOVE. Honestly, everything on the menu is amazing, but that mac and cheese? Whew! It will have you thinking about it long after you leave.
What makes Just Fish even more special is the owner. He consistently brings the energy with entertainment: karaoke nights, live bands, and other great events that keep the place alive and buzzing. You can feel the intention behind it all. He’s deeply involved in the community, and that means everything to me. Supporting a Black-owned business that pours back into the people? Say less. I’m all in.
If you’re looking for great food, great vibes, and a place that truly represents Newark’s heart and soul, Just Fish is it. Trust me, you’ll come for the atmosphere, stay for the love, and keep coming back for that mac and cheese!!!

Just Fish is a whole VIBE—artsy, welcoming, and full of culture. The mac & cheese? Absolutely unforgettable: rich, creamy, and melts in your mouth. Hats off to Aiesha Baffoe who makes the food taste great and her personality is worth coming back.

I ordered the fried whitening, baked Mac, sweet potatoes, cornbread , and potato salad on door dash this evening. The food was terrible! Everything on the platter lacked flavor. The macaroni and cheese was dry and crumbly. The potato salad has a strong pickle flavor that makes it completely inedible. The fish was fried nicely, but that is it. There was not even a single seasoning used. I wish I was exaggerating.The only thing on the platter that was edible was the yams. You would think I’m a food critic with all my complaints. They could at least used salt. I will not be ordering nor even going in for a meal. I’m underwhelmed and disappointed. I will not be recommending this to no one!

I love supporting black-owned businesses and am grateful that Just Fish checked off all my boxes!
✅The food is good; I ordered baked salmon, yams, and collard greens to go. ⚠️ My only critique is that the greens were a tad saltier than I’d prefer but were well-balanced with the savory flavor of the salmon and candied yams.
✅Oh, and that cornbread – it’s real!! Real Good! It was so good that I couldn’t wait to dig in (hence my photos of the food after I started eating ).
SIDE NOTE: I wish the presentation were nicer (although decent), but I feel that way about most soul food restaurants.
✅The service was excellent; the staff was friendly, and my food came out hot and promptly! I waited at the bar while they prepared my food, so I didn’t see the entire space, but it was definitely nice enough to enjoy a sit-down dinner (indoors or outdoors). Good Job Just Fish!

I was looking forward to this meal and excited to try the fish and grits. I ordered through DoorDash and it was an awful experience from the start! My door dasher canceled the drop off, and so I called the restaurant to inquire about my pickup. The woman who answered the phone was very rude! She said my grits were substituted for fries, and when I asked why, her response was “I don’t know, I just got here”. Overall, something I was looking forward to turned into a place and food that I will never try. Courtesy truly goes a long way!

Their Fireball shots go for $14, which might sound steep, but the vibe and quality make it worth it. Just fish Bar & Grill new location is just what Gary (the owner) needed. This new location has a great atmosphere, music, TVs and I just love the backyard patio. Soul food with a touch of entertainment. Jazz, karaoke night, R & B night, live DJ and Live band depending on the night. Portion sizes are great. I can never finish my portion. The drink menu is amazing.
