The food is okay…kind of bland, just simple, no-frills homemade food. We had a burger and the Salisbury steak. My salisbury steak was way over cooked and just meat no seasoning. The vegetable soup that came with the steak was delicious.
The atmosphere is very dated, but that’s part of its charm, and we really enjoyed that. The place has been around since 1949 so that’s really cool. I can’t really knock it on the stars…it just is what it is.
I’d like to come back to try the New Mexican food and breakfast. They also closed more than an hour earlier than their posted time so something to look out for.

This is an old school restaurant that serves American and Mexican dishes. My husband and I came here for lunch. I ordered the Salisbury steak and my husband ordered enchilada plate. We both enjoyed it. The serving is generous. It is worth the price we paid. It is reasonably priced, thus the five stars. The service is wonderful. Our server was attentive and nice and very friendly . I am also giving the atmosphere of the restaurant five stars. The restaurant has tables for couples, families, friends, and big groups. It is clean and comfortable to dine in. The restroom was also clean when we dined there.

Great breakfast! I had the Las Vegas omelette with green chile. The green sauce was excellent! We’ll stop whenever we come through town.

I don’t understand the rave reviews…… We were barely greeted when we came in, we were showed to a booth and asked what we wanted to drink. Okay so far so good.
I ordered a b l t that came with fries, b l t was acceptable, but fries were ice cold.
The other person in my party ordered the hamburger steak, mashed potatoes and side salad. Neither of us have ever seen such a tiny side salad. Literally , the size for a two year old. He said his food was warm , but not hot. The serving of corn alongside of the potatoes was literally three tablespoons.
Not once did our waitress come back and ask if we needed anything, or if our meal was acceptable.
It’s an old building with old tables. And dirty chairs and dirty floors . It really needs a deep clean.
Take your chances and I hope you have a better experience than we did.
We will not be back…… you wish I could figure out how to post the pictures I took.

I have been coming here for 60 years (ouch ). Whenever we travel through the area. This is an old fashioned cafe where the food is hardy and the staff is friendly. Nothing fancy but always good.

Took the family in for a trip down memory lane from my childhood. Hillcrest has not changed one bit, and that’s a huge plus! The food is the same from 30 years ago. The atmosphere is welcoming. The service was superb especially with no empty table and only 2 ladies working to take order, bring and refill refreshments, and bus/turn over tables as customer left. So thankful to have this cozy establishment as a stop on our trips from KS to NM. Oh and may I note they were able to accommodate request for a lunch item during breakfast hours. Just superb!

We stopped and had the beef tacos. They were amazing!!! Best tacos I’ve ever had. Wrapped in a perfectly grilled homemade tortilla. Homemade salsa on the side. Service was slow. Worth the stop, delicious!

I thought the food was very flavorful, but was just a wee bit disappointed that my mexican plate wasn’t more spicy. The relleno was very good though, and the red sauce was perfect. The steak was perfectly cooked!
