Highly anticipated lunch turned out to be an anti climax. We had the tasting menu with non-alcoholic pairing. Dishes started well enough but quickly deteriorated. We had to send the fish back as it just tasted foul. Although we both sent the fish back, they were reluctant to prepare a replacement dish for both of us. I assume it’s because I ate a tad more than my wife.

As for the drinks, the quantity of each pour was downright ridiculous. I honestly thought they were waiting for me to taste the drink before giving a full pour but no, you get a measly drop for 120 euros.

Most of the staff seemed more interested in hearing themselves regurgitate their memorised lines instead of attending to our needs. My requests for the pacing to increase were neglected, no one attended to us when we needed the washroom and we were totally ignored when we finished our meal, searching for the exit.

What was supposed to be the highlight of our trip turned out to be a total disappointment. I would not recommend this restaurant at all.

Edit : after lodging a formal complaint the restaurant has apologised and offered a full refund for our meal which is very much appreciated.

Michelin Stars are well deserved! Food is amazing and their staff was great! Very attentive! And very accommodating as we wanted to share our food! Wine list is good and reasonable, we picked local Portuguese wine including a sparkling rose done with traditional method.

A little pricy for lunch, but average I think for a 2 star Michelin restaurant.

i just returned from Portugal and ate at Bel Canto. Service is excellent and attentive. Atmosphere is very staid – serious and sober and not an exciting experience as I have come to expect of Michelin Star restaurants. The 12 experiences I had paired with their non-alcoholic offerings. My final bill was over 400 euros for one person. I wouldn’t recommend it. The food itself had some interesting beginnings with crispy light exteriors and tasty fillings. Quite frankly I was bored with the experience here – they might want to step back on the “seriousness” of being Bel Canto and get in touch with their “playful inner child” when designing the experiences. I didn’t finish all of the experiences and left early. They give you a packet of these little cards at the end in an envelope with a red wax seal. I still haven’t read them yet.

Well deserved Michelin star.
We ordered from the A La Carte menu & were surprised with all the snacks in between the meals. Everything was presented and cooked to perfection. The matured sirloin was amazing ! All the meals came out in a timely manner.
The service itself was great and attentive to detail.
This experience was exceptional and I would come back again !

Incredible tasting menu with some very unique dishes. The service was legitimately the best I have ever received in a restaurant setting. I had a phenomenal time. Sure, dinner for 4 was practically a down payment on a home but worth every penny! Please check this place out if you are ever in Lisbon.

This was our third Michelin restaurant in five days (excessive) and it was outstanding. Upon arrival we were asked if we would like a tour of the kitchen. What a unique and cool experience. We chose the tasting menu and the Portuguese wine pairing. The sommelier was fantastic. These were the best wine pairings and wines of all our culinary adventures in Lisbon. (We ended up at four Michelin restaurants over six days and had Portuguese wine pairings at each.) Service was friendly and attentive. Each course was a piece of art and delighted my taste buds beyond words. Make Belcanto on your list of must do’s while in Lisbon. It’s worth it!

Belcanto is definitely unique — and definitely unexpected. If you’re open to extremely creative food (like bacon ice cream) and ready to pay top euros for an artistic dining experience, this is the place for you.

One thing I really appreciated was the presentation: before every dish, we were given a small card with a hint about what was coming next. At the end of the meal, those cards were gathered and handed to me in a beautifully scented envelope — a lovely and memorable touch.

Another highlight was the short tour through the kitchen before dinner. It was a surprise and something I’ve never experienced before — a very personal and engaging start to the evening.

If I could make one suggestion, it would be to inform guests in advance how many dishes are included in the tasting menu. We weren’t too hungry when we arrived and decided to try the full menu anyway, but at some point in the middle, we stopped enjoying the food simply because we were so full and had no idea how many courses were still to come.

Also, the bread portions could be smaller — many guests seemed to leave them almost untouched, which likely leads to unnecessary waste.

Overall, Belcanto is a remarkable restaurant that blends art and cuisine in a truly creative way. Still, while I enjoy inventive flavors and bold combinations, I tend to prefer meals that stay a bit closer to the familiar side. I’m glad I experienced it once — it’s unforgettable — but it’s probably not a place I would return to.

Dining at Belcanto is a refined and memorable experience. Chef José Avillez’s creativity is evident in every dish—beautifully presented, thoughtfully balanced, and full of character. The staff are genuinely friendly, professional, and attentive, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the evening. Being invited to tour the kitchen was a special highlight and showed the passion and precision behind the cuisine. An elegant, world-class experience and a must-visit when in Lisbon.

Belcanto isn’t just a meal — it’s an experience choreographed down to the last drop of wine and whisper of foam. From the moment we were whisked into the kitchen for a peek behind the curtain, it was clear: this wasn’t going to be dinner, it was going to be theater. Culinary theater.

We opted for the standard wine pairing, which proved to be anything but standard — each pour was a thoughtful partner to its dish, never overpowering, always enhancing. And the dishes? Inventive, delicious, sometimes playful, always refined.

The star of the night? For me, it was “The Three Little Pigs” — a dish so good it practically huffed, puffed, and blew my mind. Creative, balanced, and indulgent in the best way, it stood out even among a parade of excellence.

Service was seamless, warm, and professional. No pretense — just a team clearly proud of what they do, and for good reason.

If you’re in Lisbon and debating whether Belcanto is worth the hype — it is. Book the table. Trust the pairing. And whatever you do, don’t underestimate those pigs.

Absolutely phenomenal experience dining at Belcanto last night.
The staff here are pretty exceptional and made us feel right at home. From the start, they clearly described the menu and how to night would run. They were very attentive throughout the evening and ensured they gave us enough space at the same time. We even took a break half way through the meal which they were very accommodating.

The food was fantastic, each dish delivered was very well presented and the flavours were spot on. Not overly complicated but fresh and well balanced.
Lots of fish dishes which we love.

The restaurant itself is stunning, just the right noise level where we didn’t feel like we were in a library and had to whisper like in other restaurants we have been to.
We ended up chatted to the couple beside us who were also enjoying the experience like us.

We will most certainly be back on our next visit to Lisbon.
