The Pretender
While checking out the Christmas decorations on Balboa Island, we stopped at Wilma’s for Happy Hour.
The Red Ale was good. Since they ran out of chicken, it was easy to order, had all beef, no chicken.
All the HR tapas were good: Mini crispy tacos and Taquitos.
Restaurant was clean and has a nice ambiance. Staff was friendly and attentive.
Sat in the front area since it was a nice day and lots of people were walking Marine Ave.

Everything was fine until we were finishing up with our drinks and needing to rest before getting up and driving. When we were pushed the check, we could hear the waitress reserving our table for other people making us feel rushed. the owner and the waitress promised this couple our table. Even though the couple was fine and even suggested sitting somewhere else. Another five minutes go by and the waitress comes by again waiting the table. My mom 60 yr* is still tipsy and doesn’t feel comfortable getting up yet is now getting upset. Another five minutes go by. And even the owner comes to check-up on the couple
pologizing to them *for the wait, right in front of us… the guy of the couple was insisting, they didn’t have to sit there. The owner noticing our uncomfortableness, laughed at us as we walked away. Yes, bc after hearing that we did indeed feel insulted enough to get up and leave. That’s not how you treat people or your customers.

We went to Balboa Island for a little day trip & stopped in at Wilma’s Patio. I ordered The Feast which included a grilled cheese sandwich with avocado and tomato & cottage chips. I thought the cottage chips (fries) were very plain. Not much to them. They looked cute but needed some kind of seasoning or salt on them. The grilled cheese sandwich was okay. Nothing too special I guess. Two friends in our group ordered Turkey sandwiches, one friend ordered a fruit plate. Everyone was okay with their sandwiches but no one really loved them. This place was kind of a miss for the group. We heard their breakfast was really good though.

We come to Wilma’s every time we visit Balboa, and it never disappoints. Their chili might be my favorite, but their sandwiches, salads and breakfast are fantastic as well. Don’t skip the fries and onion rings either! Definitely check this place out if you’re looking for a low-key meal that will never disappoint.
