i loved this place!!! the chicken gyoza were perfectly crispy!!! they also have such a delicious, light soy sauce that is not overly powerful. the chefs creation sushi is very unique – give a few things you like, a few things you dislike, and they create a roll specifically for you. super cool concept! the chicken hibachi was really tasty, it came with fried rice and seasonal veggies.

I had a great experience at Maru in Midland this afternoon for lunch. After growing up eating at their original location in Okemos for years, this was my first time at this specific location and it didn’t disappoint.

Pictures attached are the following:
Pic 1 (appetizers): gyoza, rangoon dip, kimchi arancini.
Pic 2 (sushi): On top is the crouching tiger roll (sauces on side) and a cali roll. On bottom is a Cosmo roll with salmon and tuna.
Pic 3 (dessert): seasonal pumpkin spice crème brûlée with candied walnuts and dried cranberries.

I also couldn’t say nicer things about our waitress (Stacy L.). She was on top of everything despite being busy during an afternoon rush they weren’t expecting. She’s an all-star who knows how to provide quality, insightful, quick, but non-pushy service. And of course she talked me into ordering dessert despite having no plans to — glad I did!

Will be back in the future without any hesitation!

Lacking in flavor tempura dish specials. Service was mediocre. Felt pressured to order drinks and specials by the server. Tempura had a nice crispy crunch but was also very greasy at the same time. The greasy tempura shrimp in the “Cosmo Roll” took away from expectations of the sushi roll.

I tried this place once before, probably around a year ago, and I went again yesterday… Im not impressed with the food. The first time I went, everything was delicious and I really enjoyed it. My recent experience was mid at best. It was $44 for steak hibachi, but their fried rice was absolutely terrible- no flavor. I’ve had better in tv dinners. When I brought this up to our waitress, she didn’t bother to fix the situation, despite claiming that she noticed that the rice wasn’t the right color it usually is. If I’m paying $100+ dollars for a meal, all parts of it should be perfect. Also, the firecracker shrimp appetizer was not properly breaded and fell apart when picking it up. 0/10 experience, the only enjoyable part of the meal was the crab Rangoon dip.

Update: I have food poisoning so do with that information what you will.

Everything, just everything, was perfect during my experience dining with Maru. Originally, I dined with a party of three, which grew to a party of five after we spotted some friends. The staff eagerly accommodated us by seating us directly next to each other, and even offered to rearrange tables and chairs if we wanted to sit together at one table. The food was lovely and delicious: I loved the Philly roll and the gyoza. However, the absolute stars of our meal were the crunchy shrimp roll and the chestnut tea. Speaking of the tea, our server was extremely hospitable, and when we asked what brand the tea was, they brought out the entire tea package for us to snap a picture of. This exchange would only account for a small percentage of the total, and the perfect service we received from the staff. Our server’s recommendations truly elevated the dishes to an entirely different level. I would highly recommend two things: the spicy aioli and the delectable basil oil for your side salad. Speaking of the side salad, when my girlfriend and I ordered, we thought that since we only spent $16 (enough for a side soup or salad), we would receive one salad or soup because we spent only enough for one. It was to our surprise when our server handed us two salads with the best ginger dressing I have ever had in my life. That may seem like a small detail to some, but after bad food experience after bad food experience from other restaurants. It was very refreshing to be treated like our patronage was appreciated and not just a business transaction. Lastly, I want to add that the portion sizes are fantastic. My friends, who joined us after we arrived, have picky 5-year-old-esque palates. They ordered the hibachi teriyaki chicken, which they really enjoyed, and the portion sizes were huge. My experience at Maru was terrific, and I want to thank the staff.

Group dinner on a Wine Wednesday night. Waited about 10 minutes to get a table, and were probably the last table to be seated for the night. Service was friendly and timely, and the food was good. I really enjoyed the Teriyaki Chicken Hibachi plate, and the Philly Roll was decent. Biggest frustration of the night was the noisy environment – the restaurant layout made it hard to hear our own conversation at a round table of 6 due to ambient noise. Street parking is right outside, but at peak time we had to wait a moment for a spot from a leaving party.
