My husband and I were really excited for an Indian buffet. We aren’t from Madison and don’t have one anywhere near us, but I’ve had Indian food all over the world including in India and always love trying a variety of food.
Unfortunately the food was not good and we tried just about everything at the buffet. We arrived around 1pm and there were plenty of people there. The rice was clumpy, the naan was very dry, and virtually everything we tried tasted like it had been reheated multiple times. Some food was super salty, some had almost no flavor, and one or two things were so spicy it was almost inedible. (And I like spice.)
I don’t like leaving negative reviews; maybe they were having an “off” day. But I’m gonna be honest, it was so bad we were pleasantly surprised we didn’t get sick. It’s a nice enough space, and service was what you’d expect for a buffet. With multiple other Indian restaurant at in Madison, I’ll choose somewhere else next time I’m in town. Sorry, Swagat.

Excellent food, great service, and plenty of vegetarian options. Also, if you want your food hot as in spicy, and I mean HOT, this is the Indian restaurant for you. My wife can handle a lot of heat and even she exclaimed that they nailed it with how spicy the food can be. I love the Fish Pankora. It is made with Swai, which while similar to Tilapia in that it can take a lot of flavor, still retains some “fishiness,” which I prefer.
I have never been able to go there for their buffet, but here’s hoping I will have the chance soon. We have come to Swagat many times and will again in the future.

Worst Indian food I had in my life. Below average taste, low serving size and high prices. Prices higher than one of the best desi restaurants in Chicago. For comparision, one garlic naan is approx $6.

I recently dined here and overall, it was a decent experience, especially for a vegetarian. The buffet offered a satisfactory selection of dishes. While it wasn’t overwhelming, it was adequate to fill your belly. The taste of the food was good, with some dishes standing out more than others. The ambiance was pleasant and added to the dining experience.

This was amazing food. I’ve had Indian before. But never a buffet. I tried so many different foods I would’ve never had before. Definitely cleared my sinuses for a bit. And I also tried different desserts there too. The rice pudding was excellent. Glad we went there.

I have been coming to Swagat for years. Especially with my kids. The staff is mostly friendly and the food is good. During COVID, they raised their prices astronomically. Like $23 – $26 for the buffet. Just ridiculous. So for a few years, we just didn’t go there anymore because it felt like they were taking advantage of the situation.
Last week I went back because I saw they lowered their prices to a reasonable price. $16 for lunch buffet during weekdays and $18 on weekends. The food was good, BUT not very warm. I think if they just turn up there food warmers a bit it will make a huge difference…. the difference between coming back and not coming back. Cold Indian food is not good.
I’ll give them another shot, but if the food is cold again, there are better Indian restaurants in Madison. I come here for the variety of their buffet.
