Review – Dim Sum House (Philadelphia)

Dim Sum House in Philadelphia is a great Chinese restaurant with a fun and efficient way of ordering: you get a paper menu and a pencil, and simply check off what you want. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for trying multiple dishes without any fuss.

The food comes out fast and everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. The eggplant with sauce was delicious, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The chow fan (fried rice) was solid, and the pork dumplings were excellent —juicy, well-seasoned, and definitely the highlight of the meal.

Prices are very affordable, especially for the quality and portions, making it a great spot for a casual meal with friends or family.

Conclusion:
Dim Sum House is a must-visit in Philly if you’re craving authentic Chinese comfort food in a relaxed setting. Great flavors, fast service, and excellent value for money.

⭐ Overall rating: 9/10
Best: the pork dumplings and eggplant dish.
Worst: nothing major to point out.
Price: cheap and absolutely worth it.

The atmosphere hits that sweet spot—there’s an easy, social hum that makes it perfect for a big table of friends, yet the lighting is gently dim and warm enough that a two-person dinner still feels intimate. Conversations don’t get swallowed by noise; you can hear each other without shouting. Menus can sprawl, but this one has range without chaos: plenty to explore, clearly laid out, and a mocktail section that feels thoughtful rather than sugary. Prices are kind to the wallet given the portion sizes. My must-order lineup starts with the scallion pancakes—the clear headliner. The shrimp lo mein is comfort done right: soft, chewy noodles, well-seared shrimp, and a sauce that coats rather than drowns. And a new favorite is the egg custard—silky and softly set, lightly sweet.

Wow! Really incredible dim sum place. They serve a variety of options from big portion meals to small platters. I would recommend trying their durian, it’s not commonly sold in restaurants, but it was really good!

Some of the soup was tasty but salty that day. I don’t want to judge the soup on one experience.
I totally enjoyed the barbecued spare ribs. A sweet, savory Asian spice mix and tender, fall off of the bone texture. The beef pancakes were another good choice. The soup dumplings and Peking Duck look very delicious. I would go back and try both and more of the special dumplings. The service was excellent, I made a note to myself to mention the waiter and his excellent service.

Long time, downtown, mildly upscale, chinese restaurant. Used to be really cool and fancy back in the day, now it’s just kinda pedestrian. Not that it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. Food is good, not the greatest, but very good. Prices aren’t exorbitant but not cheap. Service is a mixed bag; they have a staff of Gen Z hipsters who are either disaffected and act as if they dont want to be there, or they’re veryq hospitable and professional. The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating and you can get a sense of how cool the place used to look back in the day. Been there twice recently (my girl loves tye Dan Dan Noodles), overall a good experience, not great, just good.

Went in for lunch yesterday and had a great experience. Loved the shrimp sui mai and the dan dan noodles (with chicken). We also ordered the spicy shrimp dimsums (red in color) but didn’t like it that much. It wasn’t too spicy and the skin was too thick for my liking. All in all a good place to dine in.

Our experience started with the host sitting us down at a table that had not been wiped down, with dirty menus. The server Jarslyn was very standoffish and reluctant to take our order. Although he was enthusiastic to serve the people that were sitting right next to us. While ordering he had a very hard time describing some of the food items, especially the pad Thai. I had to step in and explain what pad Thai was to my friend. After taking our order jarslyn did not return to the table for the remainder of the meal. However, him and the rest of the staff were very attentive to the other patrons. While we were eating, a guest at the bar was openly talking about how he is racist towards black people, which also made us very uncomfortable. After finishing our meal Jarslyn finally comes back to the table and filled our water, even though we had finished eating five minutes ago. After handing us the check, he sighed and said “thanks.” I’m not going to presume why our server was so clearly annoyed by our presence, but the service was still unacceptable.

As far as the food, the double cooked pork belly was overly salty, the general tso chicken and wonton soup lacked any flavor, and the soup dumplings were just okay compared to other places in the city.

The dumpling here is amazing and don’t skip the veggies either!

I was craving some dim sum dumplings after watching a few short videos so we came out to University City and checked out this restaurant. We were not disappointed with the dumplings we ordered all the different soup dumplings which are highly recommended. One down side was we had to request for additional dumpling sauce and soy sauce. Not that we need a lot of it but it wasn’t conveniently on the table like most places but I understand as well. Can’t deduct any stars because of that though. Service was great and the food was great. If you go with a group I would recommend to share and split the meals, the best way to try different kinds of dumplings and meals.

Highly recommend and get the soup dumplings here.

Cannot Recommend this place enough. The menu is huge and it’s all good, so you’ll want to go back again and again to try everything. Definitely recommend going with people who like to split food as it’s all served family style, but you can also just get one or two orders for yourself. Highly customizable and all the dumplings and buns are so good as you’d expect.
