You start to realize this isn’t just about burritos—it’s about existence. About what it means to pick one illusion over another. Taco Bell offers you the dream of uniformity, every taco built in a lab of engineered nostalgia. Del Taco, meanwhile, slips a hand across the veil and whispers: we have fries with that.
But the deciding factor—the axis on which the universe tilts—is the sauces. At Del Taco, the power sits right on your table. Red packets, green packets, yellow packets. An altar of autonomy where you choose your own destiny, drip by drip. It’s absurd, it’s trivial, and yet…it shakes reality.
Because in that moment, you realize freedom doesn’t always come from cosmic revelations or grand philosophies. Sometimes it comes from holding five packets of Del Scorcho in your hand and knowing you, not the corporation, get to decide the burn.
I ordered a strawberry shake and what the older woman working front counter and drive thru handed me was strawberry shake mix. When I mentioned it was a little runny she said that’s how it is and shut the window. When I headed inside to try to get an actual shake I was greeted with dirty looks by all three workers that were there. The one at the counter did begrudgingly make me a replacement shake after letting the machine run for a while, this one has the consistency of a shake that has sat on the counter for an hour. I guess that was a slight improvement
The strawberry mixture that was being used for the shake was being held in a plastic drink cup and left sitting on the counter. I’m sure a sugary fruit mix is just fine sitting out at room temperature.
Above the drive thru window is a sign starting that customers are to be greeted within 10 seconds. This was the only standard that they exceeded, it took 43 seconds for her to greet me. Not that I care about that all that much but if the management is going to leave a store unsupervised if might be a good idea to make sure that the people left there are capable of doing the bare minimum of what the job requires.
