For drinks, I had a simple mocktail and my boyfriend had an old fashioned. He enjoyed his drink a lot and thought it was great quality liquor.
We ordered a half dozen of east coast oysters and they were the highlight of my dinner. They receive their order of oysters on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
For my meal, I ordered a ribeye with bone marrow butter and it was delicious. Cooked perfectly to my liking.
For our sides, we ordered broccolini and mashed potatoes. I always enjoy broccolini, but the mashed potatoes were a little dry for my liking.
Our server told us that 801 is known for their soufflés, and they even gave it to me for free for my birthday! It was very generous of them. I thought it was okay, however, I’m interested in trying the chocolate cake next time
Safe to say, we will definitely be back again in the future!
Truly, a top shelf experience that will have you ready to fist fight like a gentleman with anyone who disagrees. Dining at 801 Chophouse feels less like going out to eat and more like being granted temporary membership in a very exclusive club where the password is “Yes, I’ll take the surf and turf.”
An exquisite experience from start to finish and the kind of meal that makes you rethink your life priorities. Specifically, why I’m not here more often, despite being new to town!
The Caesar salad deserves its own standing ovation. Crisp romaine, bold dressing, and anchovies that weren’t shy about showing up to the party. The steak arrived with the quiet confidence of something that has never once questioned its purpose in life. Perfectly cooked, beautifully rested with two 4 ounce medallions with a scallop and colossal shrimp, respectively. The beef was so tender I wondered if it had been raised on affirmations and classical music. And then there were the baby carrots. I don’t know what wizardry is happening in that kitchen. If all carrots tasted like this, children everywhere would be voluntarily requesting vegetables.
A dining room adorned with oak accents and white table cloths, if there was any confusion about what type of establishment you were in, the large golden bull at the middle of the dining room removes any doubt that beef is the star attraction.
In terms of the menu, you will see many of the expected land and sea fare. Though much of the menu will feel familiar, the wait staff incredibly attentive and does an excellent job making recommendations and guiding you throughout the dining experience.
During my visit with family we tried the prime rib, salmon and jumbo shrimp with sides of Mac and cheese and corn. While everything was well prepared, the shrimp was a personal standout.
If you are looking for a special night out in Des Moines, 801 is an solid selection.
Flu our server went into the history of the 801 Chop House and the note pad on table. We had fun creating notes for Flu.
All were very attentive providing excellent service.
Cam enjoyed A5 Wagyu, all others had excellent selections from seafood, steak and chicken.
Will definitely try again if ever in Des Moines.
