Shokudô is a modern Japanese izakaya led by chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya. Centered on an open robata grill, the menu showcases ramen, yakitori, tempura, and hand rolls, crafted with seasonality and precision. The space draws on wabi-sabi simplicity and farmhouse warmth, balanced by the energy of a lively Japanese beer garden. A place for sharing, gathering, and discovering flavor in its purest form.

Writing this review as I’m eating my leftovers –
We made a reservation at Shokudo for my birthday and it was absolutely amazing.
After coming back from Japan last year, I was craving something in Charleston that could compare to the food and this meal truly brought me back. It’s very clear that Shokudo puts a lot of thought, respect and time into their food, something that really differentiates Japanese food from the rest. The service was amazing, they gave me a personalized birthday card and the whole staff was constantly attentive to our table. Truly one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. I’m so happy that people in Charleston can now experience food like this.

We tried this newer restaurant to celebrate a birthday. Friendly knowledgeable Tyniyah is an Incredible attentive server and explained each ingredient with detail. The food was amazing, and as encouraged, our group shared the appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The menu has great variety and everything our group ordered was full of flavor. We were sitting close to the kitchen and we could see the chefs and servers keeping an eye of detail and cleanliness during the preparation and presentation that impressed our group.

Stop looking at reviews, stop thinking about it and just go. Matter of fact just stop reading this review go back book your reso and then come back.. I’ll wait. This place is phenomenal! Hands down top 5 restaurants in Charleston and one of my top all time. Maya who?!? Sorry Maya but you will not be missed. I did not have high expectations walking in and hadn’t really heard much about this place but man oh man did they deliver! Service superb, food exceptional, cocktails elevated, I brought my own company and she’s always a 10/10. Even the bathrooms in this place smelled good. We tried a bit of everything, allergies including a tree nut one wasn’t an issue at all. We ended up getting the wrong cocktail at first and thank you Bob Ross for that happy little mistake because that I shishito you not cocktail was awesome! The yuzu-al suspect also a winner! They also do a sake flight which was a great mix and included cowboy Yamahai which I always enjoy. You have to get the edamame, best I’ve ever had anywhere. The skewers were great the hand rolls even better, small plates large plates they didn’t miss. Then dessert was an ode to Mcdonadls baked apple pie! Shut the front door! Chef Masa’s throw back to my childhood and his own in an elevated way was truly icing on the cake. Yes I walked over and clapped for the kitchen it was excellent! Charlie stopped by and we had a nice chat, Curtis or Chris our server..I kept saying it wrong, was excellent, his suggestions were great and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience on a random Wednesday night. 10/10 Highly recommended and James Beard worthy.

Indago Road has done it again, with another amazing concept with the best Japanese food & service. This is not your ordinary Japanese food this is Izakaya-Tavern style where they smoke the food with charcoal so the taste is smokey in a good way. The menu was super extensive with plenty of meats and sides to try.
Chef Masa is so talented; I would highly recommend coming and giving them a try, it’s a great addition to King St, in Charleston. Make sure you come with friends so you can order all types of different dishes to share! Ask for Connor, he took such great care of us, and made our dinner so memorable.

We tried Shokudo on opening day and absolutely loved it! We ordered a variety of skewers and every single one was delicious — the duck meatball (kamo tsukune), chicken thigh (tori negima – my favorite!), and pork butt (kushi katsu). The karaage was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the BBQ pork ribs were incredible (sticky & sweet).
The ramen was okay and a bit light on the broth. We finished with the miso ice cream, and we absolutely loved it!
It is definitely on the pricier side, which makes it more of a special-occasion spot than a regular dinner outing. Still, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and very welcoming, and the overall quality and service made it a memorable visit!

We had an excellent dinning experience with Chris. Every dish was amazing, the flavors were incredible, and the service was top notch. Highly recommend the bbq ribs, the oysters, and the kushi katsu. We had many other small plates and the Nagoya ramen dish and dessert. We will definitely be back!

Was in Charleston for work and this was near my hotel, went there right after it opened and it ended up being one of the best meals I’ve had in quite awhile, everything was amazing and I thought they missed something with how relatively cheap it was. To be fair I think my frame of reference is off from living in NYC are my whole life but even still. Sophia was my waitress and she was great recommended some things I wasn’t even considering and they were all 10/10. The shaka shaka fries and the Nagoya noodles especially stand out. If you’re in Charleston don’t miss this place, it’s like high-end dining without the crazy prices.

Most of the courses were good to great.
A couple were just okay.
Pacing was way too fast. 7 dishes in about 45 minutes. Less than an hour for an entire meal including drinks order and a fair amount of menu time. Give a breath between dishes.
Price adds up quick.

What a wonderful experience Shokudô was! Me and my partner made a reservation for our 1st anniversary with a few special requests listed and the workers at Shokudô made sure our visit was a special one. The food we had was from the 4 course restaurant week menu and was amazing, from taretare to the shishito peppers and the soba noodles with wild boar everything was so flavorful (apologies for the lack of pictures we just dug right in). The atmosphere was wonderful especially the outdoor red lit bar in the back of the restaurant which Cecilia was so kind to show us among all the other little things she did for us. My favorite part aside from the food and company was the card on our table when we first walked in that read “Happy 1st Anniversary” and was signed by all the workers. I would highly recommend Shokudô to anyone looking for a higher end dining experience and a wonderful night out. Thank you so much for the experience

We finally made it to Shokudo and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We couldn’t wait to try it—and now we can’t wait to go back for all the dishes we didn’t get to try this time. The service was friendly and attentive, and everything we ordered was packed with flavor.
The standout dishes for us were the lamb and pork skewers—perfectly seasoned, tender, and truly memorable. We’re already planning our next visit!
Highly recommend.
