I’ve been to this restaurant many times, including during fixed-price events like Restaurant Week ($55 per person). On OpenTable, Ciel’s NYE pricing ranged from $65 to over $170 per person between 5:00 and 10:00 PM, even though the menu stayed the same. The price doubling within minutes felt exploitative.
Our 7:00 PM reservation was not honored. We were told the menu was mandatory at $150 per person. At that time, only about five tables were occupied—the emptiest I had ever seen Ciel. The server pressured us to order quickly. We ordered rock shrimp appetizers, then chicken katsu and Cajun pasta. The rock shrimp was fine. The entrées were completely flavorless and inedible—shocking for a restaurant I had previously enjoyed. I stopped eating after a few bites and asked to end our meal and remove the entrées. Based on Ciel’s normal menu, even appetizers, entrées, and dessert wouldn’t total $80 per person, so $300 was unjustified.
The manager came over and immediately began yelling and degrading me, saying, “This is not a bargain. This is not a flea market,” implying I was cheap or unworthy. We offered to pay for appetizers and drinks, but not the entrées or set menu. He said we would be forced to pay the full $300 and that his security was at the door. I told him to call the police if needed, because I would not be verbally abused for refusing inedible food.
After arguing, he tried to itemize the bill but still claimed over $150 for two drinks, two appetizers, and two barely-touched entrées—more than regular pricing. Rather than keep fighting, we paid $149 and left without having eaten a real meal.
This was the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. I have never been treated so disrespectfully. The manager also falsely claimed the restaurant was booked and busy, even though OpenTable still showed open reservations and the dining room was nearly empty.
We chose Ciel because it had availability while other places were booked. I made our reservation at 6:30 PM that same day. I believe Ciel’s reputation has declined, and their ratings reflect similar complaints.
I am not a hater, and this is not about money. I run a featured Houston food blog on Instagram, @yourfaveeatery, and I previously posted a positive review of Ciel. I will be sharing this experience as a warning to anyone expecting quality food and respectful treatment.
The interior design is striking yet tasteful, with thoughtful lighting, sleek finishes, and an energetic yet controlled vibe that enhances, rather than distracts from, the dining experience. Music, seating, and spatial flow are curated to create a seamless sense of exclusivity and comfort.
Ciel’s culinary execution is where the experience truly shines. Each dish reflects a high level of technical mastery, creativity, and respect for premium ingredients. The menu is bold yet refined, offering well-balanced flavors that feel intentional and harmonious rather than overcomplicated. Presentation is visually stunning, transforming each plate into a work of art without compromising substance or flavor.
Equally impressive is the cocktail program. The bar delivers innovative, expertly crafted cocktails that rival those of top international lounges. Every drink is thoughtfully balanced, visually appealing, and designed to complement the cuisine perfectly. Whether you prefer classic elegance or adventurous mixology, the offerings exceed expectations.
Service at Ciel is consistently exceptional. The staff is polished, attentive, and highly knowledgeable, providing a level of hospitality that feels both professional and genuinely welcoming. Timing is impeccable, recommendations are insightful, and every interaction reflects a clear commitment to excellence.
In conclusion, Ciel stands as one of Houston’s premier dining destinations. It delivers a complete sensory experience—exceptional food, world-class service, refined ambiance, and unforgettable moments. Whether for a special celebration, a romantic dinner, or an elevated night out, Ciel is a destination that not only meets high expectations but decisively surpasses them. A true gem for discerning diners seeking excellence at every level.
There is a dress code which is cool. The restaurant is upscale. The entertainment is awesome. There was a DJ when we went on a Friday and I want to say that’s any day?
The food was very good! I was surprised how yummy everything was. Our drinks were also very yummy!
The service from our server Brandon A. sadly was horrible. When we arrived he took our drink order and that took forever to come out. Then we had to chase him down to order our appetizers. We did notice he was serving another table of 5 ladies, which he was very busy with keeping them entertained, making sure they were laughing and dancing. While on our party of 10 we were having to flag him down for drink refills which he would says he would get and brought maybe 1 out of the 5 refills we asked for. In two instances we had to get up to ask someone else for water and a regular soda refill. Keep in mind there’s a 20% tip already added, which was $160 on our tab. Seems pretty unfair when you are having to chase your waiter and get things yourself.
Thankfully the staff that brought out the food was amazing and our food order was correct.
The entertainers and entertainment were phenomenal. I will say for the expensive price and ordering bottle service, we did find our waiter to be a bit checked out and not super attentive. Pricey but the food, drinks, and ambiance make it worth it. If you’re looking for a unique & upscale dining experience in Houston, this is it!
Valet available. Clean bathrooms. You do need a reservation and there is a dress code. I will be going back next time I need an exciting night out filled with good food and a fun ambiance.
