(Food was great. Our waiter was great.) The reason I’m not giving five stars is because we spent around $200 on our family meal and after paying the bill we were promptly shooed away, having been there only a little over an hour for an appetizer, drinks, main courses, and desserts. My husband and I travel for work full time, which means I only get to see the rest of my family a few times a year. So being rushed to move along was notable not only because I never in my life have experienced this at any restaurant in the Americas, Europe, or Africa… it was notable because a host or manager felt it appropriate to rush the time I was spending with my family, which is precious.

So it doesn’t matter that the food was great and our waiter was great. I will not be back.

We came for brunch before we left back home and this place was amazing. Our waitress was really friendly and awesome I forgot her name but it started with a “K”. We had dessert and she was even nice enough to pack another piece and pack it on ice and made it all the way home! Definitely worth every penny and everything is made in house!

I’ve had the pleasure of coming back to this café a few times now, and every visit has been just as delightful as the first. Kali, Cass, and Eric consistently go above and beyond to make the experience thoughtful, warm, and enjoyable. It’s the little touches that make such a big difference, like the time they dried the outdoor tables and chairs after a rain shower and even brought out cushions so my dog and I could sit comfortably outside. That level of care is rare, and it truly makes you feel welcome.

Chewbacca (my dog) is just as smitten with this place as I am! He devoured the Lassie Meal (chicken and rice) from their dog menu, and when they surprised him with a fresh-baked dessert made in-house for pups, his tail could not stop wagging. It’s safe to say he’s now a loyal customer too.

For myself, every dish I’ve tried has been a hit. The shrimp Caesar wrap is one of my favorites—the combination of black beans, queso fresco, and that creamy chipotle sauce creates a burst of flavor that feels fresh, unique, and deeply satisfying (and as a California native, I know good wraps when I taste them!). On another visit, I ordered the creamy penne chicken with bacon on Kali’s recommendation, and I’m so glad I listened. The Alfredo sauce was hands-down the best I’ve ever had, rich, smooth, perfectly seasoned and the asparagus wasn’t just an afterthought, it was tender and plentiful, adding the perfect balance.

And of course, the desserts are unforgettable. The lemon berry cake was moist, vibrant, and bursting with flavor. But the real showstopper was the decadent chocolate cake drizzled with caramel sauce, it was the kind of dessert you want to savor slowly, but it disappears too quickly because it’s just that good.

This café has truly become a special place for me, not just for the consistently delicious food, but for the people who make it such a joyful and memorable experience. Kali, Cass, and Eric bring so much heart to what they do, and it shows in every visit.

My partner and I had the most fun, uplifting, and truly unique experience at this café, thanks to our incredible server, Kali. From the moment she greeted us, her beautiful spirit and vibrant energy made the atmosphere feel warm and welcoming. She didn’t just take our order, she brought the menu to life! The way she described the food and desserts was filled with so much passion and confidence that we could genuinely hear the leadership and love she puts into what she does.

On her recommendation, I had the B.L.A.T. sandwich with turkey and mozzarella—absolutely delicious! My partner went with the shrimp Caesar wrap, which was equally amazing. And when Kali started describing the award-winning Puns Colada cake… there was no way I could resist. I’m so glad I didn’t, it was everything she promised and more!

We’ll definitely be coming back, not just for the delicious food, but to experience Kali’s amazing energy again. She turned a casual café visit into something really memorable. Thank you Kali we will see you again!

Rails Café at the Depot – Kerrville, TX

Tucked inside a beautifully restored historic train depot, Rails Café serves up more than just a meal—it delivers charm, comfort, and seriously good eats. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with vintage touches that make it feel like a step back in time.

The menu leans into classic American dishes with a fresh, flavorful twist. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty lunch or a laid-back dinner, you’ll find something that hits the spot.

But here’s the golden rule: don’t skip dessert. Their homemade pies and cakes are the real stars—rich, indulgent, and unforgettable. One bite and you’ll be plotting your return visit.

Must-try: The crème brûlée or one of their seasonal pies—seriously worth every bite.

Pros:

Charming historic setting

Friendly, attentive staff

Fresh, flavorful food

Legendary desserts

Cons:

Can get busy, especially on weekends (call ahead!)

Verdict:
Rails Café isn’t just a great place to eat—it’s a Kerrville gem. Come for the comfort food, stay for the dessert, and leave already planning your next visit.

spectacular, didn’t disappoint. second time back for me and sat outside. Weather was nice and cool, kinda windy but didn’t bother us at all. I got the panini, had mozzarella on the side, tasted delicious! Boyfriend had bison burger, devoured. The waiter/waitress were very pleasant and attentive. Dessert is definitely worth trying, so many delicious flavors to choose from. We got one to go and can’t wait to try it at home. We’ll be back soon!

This place has been on my radar for about 6 months now. So today, I took the short drive from Bandera and had lunch here.

I have to be honest, this place was amazing on all fronts! The vibe and the atmosphere are absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed my meal on the outdoor patio, and it was quite lovely.

My server, Kali was so sweet, so nice, and super professional. She explained the daily specials, answered a few questions I had about the menu, and did the PERFECT job of being attentive to my table, without “hovering”. Kali was awesome!

I had the Osso Buco and it was delicious! Then…. and then, lol I had the Pina Colada cake for dessert. Real talk, the cake was one of the best desserts I’ve had in my ENTIRE life.

I already know, that Rails A Cafe will be a regular dining experience for me. Simply amazing!

My husband and I are new to the Kerrville area and we recently decided on lunch at the Rails A Cafe at the Depot. Before I get to the food aspect of our visit, I must mention that my husband enjoys history and the restaurant has a book that they shared with him to peruse. That was a very nice gesture from the staff; now on to the meal. He enjoyed the All Natural North American Bison Burger and I order the Wild Mushroom Quesadillas. Both were very delicious. Our server, Izaiah, was attentive, cordial, and a delight to meet. And although the desserts looked scrumptious, we were full from our meals so we did not indulge. Thank you all at the Rails for a wonderful experience!

Unfortunately it looks like half of my salmon didn’t get out on my $18.00 salad along with any additional toppings. For the price, it was not worth it. Very upset at the amount for the price I paid.

Price point caught us a little off guard at first; not terribly expensive but more than we had anticipated. That being said, it was absolutely worth it. Everything was fantastic and the flavors were great. The grilled quail salad with apple pico and a fruit vinaigrette was unlike anything I’ve tasted before. The orzo in my wife’s dish was cooked perfectly. The alcohol infused cakes were delectable. Definitely a worthwhile meal.

My family went for dinner for the first time recently. We made a reservation, and I’m glad we did, as the tables were filling up fast. There are limited inside tables, but there is also a pretty patio for outside dining. The menu is fairly extensive, and everything sounded wonderful; it was hard to choose. The food did not disappoint – it was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly done. The staff was friendly. My only complaint was the waitress came off a bit condescending and judgmental, which made us all feel a bit uncomfortable. She told us how we should order or food or what we would or would not want. Instead of it sounding helpful, she acted like we should know their menu and how things worked. With that said, she was attentive with the table, and we didn’t have to wait for things. We will definitely go back, as it didn’t completely ruin the experience, but I’m hopeful we get another server in the future.
